Woman Loses Benefits Over Facebook Photos
 

Quick synopsis: A Canadian woman has been on sick-leave for a year for major depression and her company stopped her benefits after discovering Facebook photos. The insurance agent described several photos where she appeared to be having fun: partying at a Chippendale's show, on vacation, etc. The company believes the photos are evidence that she is no longer depressed and clearly available to work.

I have a friend who did insurance fraud investigation and a big part of his job was searching through Facebook, MySpace, AFF, etc... for photos of them compromising their claims.

He was very successful.

I think we've reached our quota for this week of news stories where the author feigns amusement as folks experience real consequences because of the things they [stupidly] put on the www.

Don't put things on the internet the equals a "Kick Me" sign and you won't lose what you need.

Nobody forced her to take pics while watching strippers...

It's really not hard at all to get into someone's profile... I mean, hypothetically. How you'd hypothetically do it would be to create a profile with stuff in common with the target, e.g., you went to the same college, same major, use what you hypothetically know. Also, get a picture of someone who is very attractive and either younger than or at the same age as the hypothetical target. Send a friend request to them and all of their friends and hypothetically, of course, you are in.

Our PI does offer this service, but we've never had a need to take him up on it because in all the cases that matter, these folks have 500+ friends and it's not hard to find one which really favors our client.. and in that case, the information isn't private at all.

Moral of the story again is don't put anything on the internet that you don't want folks to find out about you. My solution for this was to make all of my info public and be the opposite of discrete as to who I am... kind of puts a damper on the urge to post the OMG I WAS SO DRUNK pics (which don't exist anyhow because I try not to allow myself to be photographed even holding an alcoholic beverage) on my facebook.

I'd never friend a stranger, wtf are people thinking? I also don't have super detailed information anyway, including party pictures or anything I wouldn't let my boss and family see (since I have a facebook account for my job, you bet it is appropriate since my boss and coworkers are my friends!). People have tried to add me and I said no as they agreed they couldn't be trusted to not be inappropriate, at least they admit it.

A local teacher is about to lose her job because of what she posted on Facebook...the fool posted pictures of herself partying at her house with middle schoolers :eek: with captions like "me and my boyfriend" and "I Am Hott (sic) and Sexy". Let me say that she weighs more than most men. Anyway, her information was open to anyone who wanted to see it; was she wanting to get fired?

I've only friended people for game purposes (sorority life) and then taken them off immediately once they joined my house. I can assure you, when any of us have gotten friend requests from people who said they went to school with us, but we didn't remember, there were "who the @#$% is Joe Smith" emails going back and forth before any friending was done. I can't imagine just friending someone because they say they went to the same school if you have no idea who they are.

I don't friend a lot of people I know, because I'm just not that into facebook. A lot of the suggestions for "friends" are valid, but ehhhh not that interested.

You said it, sister - I have excellent recall and anyone that I don't know who tries to friend is turned down. On attempt #2, they get the block.

As for the woman in question in the original post, as my German grandmother would say: Das kommt davon!!

Personally, I think what a teacher thinks of herself is her own business. A teacher partying with students and calling one of them her "boyfriend" I think is more disturbing :)

It's the spelling that blew my mind, not the concept of being hot. And, of course, the inappropriateness of the boyfriend & partying with her students. blech all around.

That's the same thing as taking a picture of someone in phyischal therapy and claiming they can walk and are inelligable for benefits.
