Rituals specifically for alumnae

Does your GLO have any rituals specifically for your alumnae? If so, when are they performed and by whom?

AOII Angel 11-20-2009 07:57 AM

Yes, at alumnae meetings by alumnae. It's ritual...can't be anymore specific than that!

LucyKKG 11-20-2009 08:16 AM

You know, I'm not sure we do! I haven't experienced it, but I've only been an alumna for a few months. Hmm...

FSUZeta 11-20-2009 08:49 AM

we perform a ceremony for graduating seniors, but other than that no specific ritual for alumnae.

DrPhil 11-20-2009 10:50 AM

No.

Because of my boyfriend, I know Delta Chi has an alum ritual that you dont know about until you become an alum

Yes there are rituals. Like AOII Angel, I can't say anything else about it.

There you go stealing my thunder! The Alumnus Ceremony is a private Ritual that marks the transition to alumnus membership. They are performed by a certain number of alumni usually for graduating seniors, but the brothers going through the Ritual may also be older alumni because it was not instituted until 1992, if I remember correctly. It can be performed on a variety of occasions, but my chapter usually holds it for graduating seniors right after spring Initiation.

KSUViolet06 11-20-2009 12:47 PM

Yes we do (when collegians become alumnae) and it is performed by alumnae.

Psi U MC Vito 11-20-2009 12:51 PM

We have one when Undergrads become alumni, but that's all I can say.

I'm not trying to pry. I respect the privacy of all of the other GLOs, which is why I kept my questions so vague. Thanks for all your responses, though. That's exactly what I wanted to know! :)

...unless you're a Delta Chi collegiate who happens to read this thred. ;)

AOII Angel 11-20-2009 08:17 PM

We also have a lot of ceremonies that are not considered ritual but are included in our ritual book like for 25th and 50th anniversaries and Memorial services. These are not ritual and are therefore open to non-members, but they are meant specifically for alumnae.

Well the existence of the Ritual is not a secret to undergraduate members but the content is not revealed until you go through the ceremony as a graduating senior (or older alumnus).

Oh, that sounds really sweet and thoughtful.

What's funny is that I just assumed that most all GLOs had rituals for alumni only. That was just one bit of Sorority Wars that I thought was off-base. They held their alumae meeting at a country club out in the open and I thought "yeah, right!"

So now I have another question to throw into the mix. If your GLO does not have rituals for alumni, do you meet in public?

I don't understand this question.

Beryana 11-21-2009 03:07 PM

when we aren't doing ritual then yes, we do meet in a public place (or in a room that the blinds need to be drawn). :)

ETA: AOII does NOT have a ritual specifically for alumnae - other than the open ceremonies and memorials perviously mentioned.

Our rituals are not SPECIFICALLY for alumnae, but alumnae do have rituals.

Leslie,

Our meeting are held in members' homes. Hubby's are around, kids are around. Nothing secret about our meetings.

That (at least I think it is) is our organization as well. In our case, actives are allowed to be present for alumnae rituals but the rituals are for the alumnae. I think that is what you meant....

It's possible she means that alumni have rituals for chapter meetings and initiations just like undergrads.

There actually is a special ritual for alumnae...just read it the other day...it only differs by paragraph, but it is different all the same. Check the ritual book!

Oops. That seems likely.

Well, in any case, the meaning I interpreted is how it is in my sorority.

Katmandu 11-21-2009 09:31 PM

Our alumni meetings are often at restaurants, coffeeshops, and other public places, or at members homes with other family members sometimes in and out and around. They are not secret.

Hmm, interesting. My experience has been quite different. I can think of two things done at an AA meeting that I wouldn't feel comfortable doing in public. Maybe it differs from AA to AA? I don't know.
