What are some of the big name fraternities that are well-respected and organized but know how to have a good time as well??

I've always heard the best things about Sigma Chi. They have really good connections that will help you once you graduate and have a good reputation on campus. Also, I've had the best time at every Sigma Chi party & mixer that I've attended. Anyone a little biased? #1, Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) is the #1 fraternity there is. But, if secrecy isn't your deal, then here are a few chapters that I can think of that you should look into. I have been a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha
International Fraternity for almost 3 years. Our leadership conferences are a step above the rest I believe. The workshops we attend pay off very much once the officers return to their chapters. Much is learned from the facilitators and instructors. But dont get me wrong, we definitely get our partying in as well. We also have a digital website that our secretary and other officers use to fill out paper work, and to have any of our questions answered. In my personal experience, I have found the gentlemen of Sigma Chi to be one of the best fraternities around. The men in the chapter at my school excelled in academics, intramural sports and threw great parites. In fact my sorority had one of our best exchanges with them. I hope this info. helps you!

If you want to join an organization that not only one of the largest, second to be exact, but one that gives you all you need in life, a ritual that is meaniful and brothers that are your best friends, and good party, check out Sigma Chi. It won't be hard to find a local chapter, were at every school.

You should try to find a fraternity that you fit in with...not one that boasts because they are the second largest.
Oh, the Sig's on my campus are about to lose their charter because of hazing. They started with a pledge class of 31, and they were down to 9 pledges 3 weeks before school finished this semester. |
I'm glad all of you are proud of your groups but how about a REAL answer for Brandon...
It all depends on where you live and where you go to school. I can tell you that on my campus is was always TKE and DU... neither have been mentioned. Other campuses it may be Kappa Sigma or Sigma Chi. Its important to look at all the fraternities available to you and investigate to see where you would fit best. I will tell you though that its rare that none of them would be fun to join! |
hey Brandon not to sound snotty or anything, but if you are so interested in fraternities at your school why don't you rush? There is no law that says if you go through rush that you have to pledge a fraternity? Just go and see what they are like, that's what it's there for.
And not to turn you off or anything because I am greek and for me it's been everything I wanted it to be, but you might find that after rushing you might not want to be apart of the greek system at your school??? Something else you can do is go to boston university's website & look under student organizations or greek life. vtqt had the best suggestion- go through rush.. see where YOU fit in, if anywhere. And have a good time. |

As others have said go through rush, but it seems to me you are a little too caught up with reputation and the national organization. The one thing I think you need to realize is that chapters vary from campus to campus and the reputation at each is always changing. I got bids and had friends interested in rushing me at all the BIG name frats at UC Berkeley. But I chose a mid tier fraternity on the rise who had the type of people I knew I could be lifetime friends and brothers with. I felt the people were most important and what they stood for. Not only are we the most diverse house on campus with one of the largest pledge classes last semester. We also are the only fratnerity to have created our own national philanthropy PUSH America which rasies money and awareness for the Handicaped. Join somewhere you think that you can contribute also. I want add to the tradition of Gamma Chapter - Pi Kappa Phi's longest continous running chapter, so the semester after pledging I am taking on the responsiblity of Co-social chair. Which is actually pretty stressful cause PiKapp's love to Party. I hope this advice was helpful and like the others said go through rush it's the only way to know which is right for you. |
well, thanks for the advice. i am goin to college in the next year and i was just wondering what fraternities are at boston university, the college i want to go to. thank you all for the good advice.

Call the Greek Life office at BU and find out what they have on campus. Better yet, get in contact with the Interfraternity Council (governing body of all fraternitites) Rush Chairman and get the Summer Rush Calendar and plan on going out and meeting some of the fraternities! It never hurts to get started early, espically if rush is only 1 week long!

Hey Brandon. No one has mentioned Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Omega Psi Phi, Kappa Alpha Psi, Phi Beta Sigma, and the Iota's all very prestigious organizations. Not to mention they like to "PARTY". Just wanted to make you aware but if you don't want a life long brotherhood don't even bother. Good luck.

Brandon, May I suggest you go to www.greeklife.org then click on IFC/fraternities. I may be off by a few but the 34 or 36 national fraternities are listed there. This website only includes the IFC member houses. Good luck!

I am currently a member of Kappa Sigma at Northeastern University in Boston....I can vouch for my brothers across fenway when I say that Kappa Sig is the way to go at BU. Check them out when you get the chance...I know that you'll see that there could be no other choice.. |

I have to agree that the thing to do is go through rush and see what you like. Go and see everyone, not just the NIC fraternities but also the NPHC groups and those who are local. Find the men that your most relate to. It's great to see that the people on this site love their chapters and the fraternities, but this is a choice that you have to make. Even then, if you go through rush -which can be a pretty harrowing experience - and don't find anything you like, you still have one more option. Find men like you and start your own fraternity. It can be a chapter of a national group or a local group, but it will be a chance for you to truly have a say in that part of our life. I helped found a chapter of Phi Kappa Psi and it was one of the best things to happen in my life. I would suggest rushing next fall when you go to university. Thats the best way to determine which fraternity is best for you. On our campus I think the FIJI's are the best but it depends on the university. Good luck with your choice! |
Before you pledge any fraternity, ask yourself the following questions: What is the main reason you want to join a fraternity and what do you hope to get out of your experiences?
Find an organization that best fits you. Don't go by the BS that people feed you. Well I can tell you that Tau Kappa Epsilon is the LARGEST Fraternity as far as members. I think we are the best, but people look for different things in each Fraternity. Just go check out the campus and see who is out there. I am sure anybody would be willing to help you out or give you details.

I dont believe there is really one fraternity that overshadows or is better than another. All you should be interested in is a fraternity that has members that you like.

The truth about fraternities is this: the fraternity you join determines your rank according to the sororities on campus, so ignore the rush chairman when he says "yes, we have activities with a lot of the sororities."
Be wary of houses whose actives say "well I joined for the brotherhood, not just for girls." They probably don't have too many exchanges or social activities. No girls will ever openly tell you what they think of a particular house. If you really want to know, ask a girl you know *very well* to ask her friends what they think of a particular house. But then why are you thinking of joining in the first place if you only care about reputation? However, I have to admit that being on the bottom of the food chain sucks. But also realize that chapters from different schools vary tremendously. At UCLA, Sigma Chi is pretty much the top fraternity socially, because they have exchanges with the four "best" sororities: Delta Gamma, Pi Beta Phi ("Pi Phi"), Kappa Kappa Gamma ("Kappa"), and Kappa Alpha Theta ("Theta"). Sigma Chi seems to be a bunch of glamorous jocks. My fraternity is (I think) labeled as a group of nice guys, which of course means that we never get to do stuff with the "good" sororities. AEPhi likes us though. But when the DG's are 35 and their washed up cool husbands ditch them for 25 year-olds, that will be my revenge... The bottom line is to make sure you are joining the right group by visiting them all. The most important thing is to be confident and let the actives in a particular chapter see your confidence. If you believe in yourself, you will get bids from all of the houses. I know that my fraternity is the right one for me, and those who joined the wrong house will never be as happy or as satisfied as I will be. Most importantly, be sure that the fraternity you join is the right one for you; be true to yourself. |

That’s not what he said dude…he said if you join a fraternity just because everyone says it’s the “best” and let others’ opinions influence your choice, you are a follower. Which is true. Anyone who joins ANY organization for prestige or because someone else tells you to is going to have a very hollow experience.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon has the most alumni with over 250,000 Tau Kappa Epsilon has the most active chapters with over 300 Sigma Phi Epsilon has the most active members with over 18,000. These statistic are bout two years old, but I imagine they are about the same. Cheers. ------------------ |

Sigma Lambda Beta is unquestionably the best fraternity. We are not to well known, but we were just founded in 1986 and we have already made our way to over 100 schools... We have the tightest belief in the principle of brotherhood, we will do anything it takes to help each other out. Our colors are purple and white. We are a multicultural fraternity, with a majority base of hispanic students.

My personal favorite is Sigma Chi (I got to Ohio State Univ.). I use to also love Kappa Sig but looks like they lost their charter. But as I said I LOVE sigma chi. they are the hottest guys, best dressed, well mannered, party with the best sororities and a lot of fun plus they respect the girls...I pratically live at the Sigma Chi house because I know I can sleep there anytime and not have to worry about guys trying to jump my bones

Hi, it's Andy. I go to UCLA. Sigma Chi is probably the most glamorous fraternity here. On the other hand, they have 100+ members, so they probably don't have the greatest brotherhood. We have 48 guys, which I think is a little small, but I'm friends with all of my bros. I'm glad I joined!
Just to clarify what I wrote in the last post... Part of the reason that we have no activities with the "good" sororities is that we have a much smaller chapter than they have. DG and Alpha Phi have around 150 members each, so they aren't exactly happy about going over to hang out with around 50 guys. AEPhi does stuff with us though. They are also small. There are only 8 sororities here, so their membership is naturally more concentrated. There are 15 fraternities with houses, and fewer members in each one. My attitude is this: if the girls judge my worth as a man based on which fraternity I'm in, I didn't want to go out with them anyway. A lot of the non-elitist girls are very nice to me. For example, the ones who live on the all-girls floor here. By the way, girls' dads like me. Girls' moms *love* me! It's because I'm a total straightedge and because I'm tall. Brandon, This may be reiterating what has already been said - but check out all the houses, you'll find one that fits your tastes. However, I do have to put a slightly BIASED option on Lambda Chi Alpha, mainly that BU is where we were originally founded back in 1909 - so the chapter there is the original chapter - means a lot to members. But, again, find where you feel comfortable just being YOURSELF around the members.
