Are Greeks biased in who they invite to parties/events?

I noticed that on college campuses, fraternities and sororities hand out flyers to parties or events to people who are supposedly attractive or people who look "cool." A lot of people walk by but they only give it to some people. The frat guys especially like it to give them to attractive girls. At least that's what I'm getting from it. Is that true that they select certain people or do they really give it to random people?

kddani 11-04-2009 07:24 AM

It's a private party. They can invite whoever they want. If you had a birthday party growing up, did you just put up signs all over the place inviting whoever wanted to come?

33girl 11-04-2009 12:17 PM

Flyers? Seriously? If you have to create and hand out flyers, it's probably going to be a lame party anyway.

Not to mention that it seems like a big RMF. On ocassion, chapters at my school would sponsor open dances at the student pavillion to raise money for philanthropies, but parties at houses were generally considered by invitation only. That way we could control who was in the house and knew which brother was responsible for which guests.

DoubleTDG 11-04-2009 12:55 PM

We always had date parties. You had to invite one person (although there was a point where we did crush parties so you could invite up to three people) and you had to get information about them or they would not be allowed on the bus.

LatinaAlumna 11-04-2009 01:01 PM

If you don't have a house, and you're having your party at a club or other off-campus venue, it's actually a pretty common and effective way of getting a good turn-out. This is a practice among ethnic GLOs in many areas of the country, and I assure you, 33girl, it does not automatically make a party "lame."

OP--as someone said earlier, chapters are allowed to distribute fliers to anyone they want to. Greeks are not the only groups that do this. I work on a large campus, and I see certain student orgs "pass over" some students walking by and hand fliers to others. If you really want one, just go up and ask for it.

33girl 11-04-2009 01:32 PM

^^I have heard of that, and I apologize for generalizing, but I don't think the OP was talking about ethnic GLOs.

Agreed. Flyers? Isn't that what facebook events are for?

blueroses1313 11-04-2009 03:30 PM

Unfortunately not everybody has facebook (no, really, it's true, there are some), and of those who do have it, not everybody checks it obessively... unlike myself. ;)

honeychile 11-04-2009 03:34 PM

Sounds like something from The House Bunny, but I would imagine that the flyers are handed out to people who look receptive to receiving them.

nittanyalum 11-04-2009 03:35 PM

...and it sounds like the OP obviously didn't get one.

Usually it's flyers about some event in some nightclub or something... heck there was one about a "lingerie party" at some club in L.A. Oh and now that you mention ethnic GLOS, I noticed that it's usually the Asian ones that do it.

Kevin 11-04-2009 08:21 PM

Some clubs use greek orgs to help promote them. And yes, if that's the case, only the pretty people are getting personal invites. Welcome to life.

bostongreek 11-04-2009 08:27 PM

sorry you're not attractive :(

agzg 11-04-2009 08:38 PM

Is this like an "everyone should get a trophy" thing?

I figured you were referring to the more mainstream GLO culture. :)

:)

And even with facebook, flyers are still the way-to-go for many college-aged and grown folks parties when there's a venue for mass distribution.

ETA: Because facebook sucks so not everyone has a page and those who have a page don't necessarily check their invites and events regularly.

What the hell? That's lame. So what do the Greeks get out of it? Will they even be at the event?

Would you care so much if you were deemed worthy of an invitation?

You should do what other people who are overlooked often do, found your own GLO. :) Good luck.

Welp, he's interested in your mental and emotional health. He'd sooooooo hand you a flyer. :)

CutiePie2000 11-04-2009 11:35 PM

RE: the original question "Are Greeks biased in who they invite to parties/events? "

Yes and particularly where there are also a lot of fraternities and sororities, one GLO might socialize predominantly with a few others (like 4 or 5) and vice versa.

rufio 11-04-2009 11:41 PM

Are you going to start a new thread if you aren't invited to sit at the grown-ups table this thanksgiving?

"Greeks" calling other people dumbasses? You got jokes bro. :D
This whole thread reeks of ignorance and superficiality and you wanna talk about intelligence? LOL. Is this a touchy subject cuz y'all seem sensitive about it, jumping on my nuts. I guess birds of a feather flock together eh? Here's my parting words to you all: this isn't high school, it's college, grow up. Cheers.

Yet you are the one who came on this site complaining about not getting invites to a party. Oookay. Two more points. One how do you get ignorance out of this thread? Second and perhaps most importantly, I am not your bro. Get, got it? Good.

Shit, last post this time I swear. Where did I complain about not getting invites? Are you pulling stuff out of your ass again? I think you all did, quick to jump the gun (if that's not ignorance, what is it "cuz")? Go back in the entire thread and find where I said that. I'll give you a cookie if you can.
