If I gave you enough money . . .

So that you never had to work again: What would you choose to do? Occupation(s)? ITs great test to see if you are heading in the right life direction . . .

SigmaChiCard 10-12-2001 02:20 PM

I'm up between writing (doing journalism and photography, finishing my novel, writing a scipt), teaching Caluclus in High school, and establishing a new club team that is practically a school for soccer where it's as intense as it is in other countries, or even for example how gymnastics evidently is here)

UMgirl 10-12-2001 02:25 PM

This is in all seriousness... If you gace me enough money, Id become probably do social work. I work for a non-profit org. (YMCA) as a child care administrator and teaching swim lessons and sometimes i just feel so bad for some of these kids, including the way i see some parents treating them. Id coach swimming too and since im trying to do the law school thing, Id still be a lawyer.

AOPiLaLa 10-12-2001 02:29 PM

I am right there with UM girl--I would work for a non-profit or some charitable group. Actually, that is what I am trying to do now. While I am a big fan of money(I like to shop to much not to be), I think nothing is more worthwhile than helping someone!

valkyrie 10-12-2001 02:47 PM

Oooh, this is fun.

I would write novels and open a truly no-kill animal shelter. At the shelter, I would provide humane services and advocacy, including humane education for children, spay/neuter and veterinary assistance, rehabilitation, animal cruelty investigation training, animal legal clinic/representation, etc. In my spare time, I would lobby for better anticruelty laws.

Time permitting, I would teach creative writing to college students and move my whole family (parents included because I don't want to have to fly to see them) to Seattle.

Wow, this sounds absolutely nothing like what I'm doing now. :(

amycat412 10-12-2001 03:25 PM

I'd write. Which I do now, I'd just do it without also having the day job. I'd go back to school and get my Phd and teach creative writing to college students. I'd spend more time volunteering at animal shelters.

And I'd travel a lot. I want to go just about everywhere and I would.

justamom 10-12-2001 03:27 PM

Let's be clear on this...I will need a LOT of money.

This is my "win the Lotto" dream.

I would open a piano bar/dinner theater/open mic establishment with recording facilities. Of course, I would perform...uh-oh, there go the patrons!

The closest I ever got to this was years of putting groups together and helping them polish their acts for talent shows in grade school and junior high. What a blast!

There MUST be money left over so everyone in my family can be comfortable.

DeltaBetaBaby 10-12-2001 04:28 PM

I would be a SCUBA instructor on a beach somewhere nice and warm.

KSig RC 10-12-2001 04:30 PM

I would become the head teaching pro at Augusta National, and live my life around golf and the golf course.

The1calledTKE 10-12-2001 05:05 PM

I would get my phd in history and teach college.

Jeff OTMG 10-12-2001 11:30 PM

I would want to be a dive master for SCUBA divers. Right here in Guam would be fine, though Little Cayman would work or some other less populated place. Don't want to own the shop, don't want the trouble of teaching, just guide dives. If there is enough money involved I have secretly always wanted to have my own art gallery.

DGPhoney 10-14-2001 08:17 PM

Wow, james impressive thread !
Well if you gave me enough money I think I would do a bunch of things, I work now at a childrens museum helping them learn things so I think I would work there for free. And also I would go into politics cause then maybe once we would have an honest politian and get the right things done in the world. I think i would just volunteer everyone, or anywhere that need my time and help.

DGPhoney~

Thrillhouse 10-14-2001 08:39 PM

I would buy a spot on a bad NBA team and play even though I stunk it up. I mean, with the salary cap nowadays, maybe some cash strapped teams would actually do it. I would be the twelth man on the team and all but it would be worth it.

If not that, I would be a professional person who stands outside of convienince stores all day like jay and silent bob. Of course I would have to be in their union too, in case I was to ever travel anywhere.

I went diving this morning, in very cold water with about three feet of visibility. My ankles kill, and I think I have pneumonia. I am going to go back to sissy diving in the Carribean, no more of this Midwest stuff. So if you ever become a divemaster, I would not reccomend doing it in central Illinois.

KSigkid 10-14-2001 09:07 PM

I would coach baseball for the rest of my life - high school, little league, Pony league, doesn't matter. I'd also try writing freelance columns, and probably try teaching preschool (I do that now, and it's a lot of fun, but nothing I could do for a career. If I had all the money I needed though, I could defintiely do it)

Miami1839 10-14-2001 09:12 PM

Put myself through law school or vet school and travel the world.
I did enjoy working with kids but the financial aspect wasnt enough for me. Even though it was very rewarding and taught me a lot about myself.

I'd indulge my hobbies... I'd either write fiction, sing, do graphics design work, be an interior decorator, be a bridal consultant, be a web designer, oh, I don't know...

I would love to work with animals, too - valkyrie, I'll come volunteer in your no-kill animal shelter :)

If I had the $$$ I'd do something part time, work from home, and be a mom too. I couldn't just be a stay-at-home mom, though - I guess I'm just a type A personality :)

Oh yeah, and I'd live in Aruba. :D

newbie 10-14-2001 11:33 PM

-Teach at preschool (I volunteered for a long time at one and LOVED it)
-be a School Counselor in HS
-get my Ph.D in Psychology and become a great Psychologist (though that's what I'm planning to do anyways!)
-manage an orphanage and take care of all those children, and have every orphan find a new home
-buy homeless people everything they need
-become a makeup artist (how fun to play with colors all day!)

and this has nothing to do with money...but would be a great job:
-be this top exec of the San Francisco Giants and be great friends with all the players and hopefully date some of the cuties ;) haha. never mind the no-dating-in-the-workplace rule! :D

juniorgrrl 10-15-2001 09:19 AM

I'd say "f-it" to practicality and I'd move to NYC and start taking acting classes, and specialize in improv comedy.

Its always been my dream to be a part of a troupe like Upright Cititzens Brigade or Second City, and, of course, the top rung of the ladder would be SNL.

But, I guess I'm taking the practical route and will be using my improv skills in the courtroom instead. :D

KillarneyRose 10-15-2001 11:13 AM

I would love to go back to school and get another bachelor's degree; this time in something like engineering or mathematics. I have a degree in journalism now; mainly because writing has always been my great strength. I would like the opportunity to try my hand at a discipline that I don't really have a natural aptitude for and see how I do.

moe.ron 10-15-2001 02:27 PM

-Be a professional guest at the Riki Lake show.
-Direct the next "independent movie"
-Agree with playing for some bad NBA team.
-Be the next David Hasselhoff and start a new show called Mountain Watch, babes in tights and skiis what more do you need?
-And live my long life dream, be an Elvis impersenator in Las VEgas. All shook up.

SigmaChiCard 10-15-2001 03:06 PM

yeah, to slightly further mine, I'd write the Great American novel, write a screen play for it, produce the film, as well as make a small, small appearance...Quentin Tarantino style. I'd never do the same thing twice, I might go on to study number theory (which was originally going to be my major) for a few years, do some work with mathematics in nature and/or religion, I would definitely travel, I'd hike the Apalachian Trail from beginning to end, There is so much I want to do, I'd definitely wait to write the novel after most of these other adventures though. I might buy a yacht and just live off of it for a few years (I met a man doing this a few days ago at the local marina, he's lived on his for 9 years!), but I'd constantly do creative, different things, but I'd eventually settle as a journalist, I think.

DeltAlum 10-15-2001 05:45 PM

I think I'd volunteer in Public Television since I have a fair amount of expertise in broadcasting.

First, though, I'd get my son (our youngest) through college. He was just named a National Merit Semi-finalist and is looking at some very pricey schools.

Lil_G 10-15-2001 06:09 PM

Buy many apartment complexes and houses near campus, and only rent them out to students at below market value.....

Miami1839 10-15-2001 09:29 PM

One other thought came to mind. I'd have a 5 star hotel built on off one of the beaches in France. We'd have an amusement park, free breakfast, free happy hour, and an annual event(week long bash) dedicated to greeks around the world.

Kevin

Lots-a-Heart 10-16-2001 09:17 AM

If only!

I would definatly finish school...it has taken me this long might as well...plus I have the rest of my life and James is giving me all this money? Oh yeah!
- Pay off my family bills, then send them anywhere with lots of cash!
- Pay off my bills, then vacation at the greek resort in France
- get rid of my crappy, crappy car
- buy my local sorority a house, and make it possible for sisters to live there rent free
- give lots and lots of money to the World Organization of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, so that underpriviledged girls around the world have the opportunity for even one night a week, to forget any problems they, their families, their country has
- then donate to all the other charities around the world
-travel
-buy the Montreal Canadiens so that they always stay a Canadian team (and for the same reasons NEwbie bought her team!)
-spend the rest of my life working on several charities

GmuTeke 10-16-2001 10:08 AM

If I had enough money, I'd be a professional dinner party guest. I and a date would get dressed up, and over cocktails and dinner we'd make lively conversation with those at our table. It's always been a personal dream of mine to find this job, but I've never seen it in the want ads.

erniegurl00 10-16-2001 11:51 AM

Good grief James this is hard! I'm not sure what I'd do since there are sooo many things I want to do with my life. I think foremost I would finish up my degree in Speech Pathology, and with all of that money I'd be able to set up my own practice. Having money would be great because I could pay for school! Yah! Every college students dream I guess...anyway :) I'd also love to travel. I've always wanted to trace my roots in Ireland since I'm 1/2 Irish, and I really want to go through Europe and China. If I chose not to work I still probably would because I'm the type of person who can't sit still and not do anything. If I wasn't a practicing SLP I'd volunteer someplace. :)

maggieaxid 10-16-2001 01:07 PM

I would start my own event planning company with my friends in myrtle beach, hilton head, or charleston.

xok85xo 10-16-2001 03:33 PM

okay, so am I the only lazy one who if I had enough money would actually just NOT do anything, except maybe travel and spend the money? :)

GmuTeke 10-16-2001 03:36 PM

here here xok85! i'm reminded of Office Space, where the character says "if i had a million dollars, i'd do nothing"

The1calledTKE 10-16-2001 03:41 PM

"if i had a million dollars" is a great barenaked ladies song.

Yeah! Thats what i'd do..i'd build a treefort in my yard :)
hehe

33girl 10-16-2001 07:45 PM

I would buy a radio station and play whatever I wanted and whatever the listeners called in to hear. No focus groups, no playlists, no corporate restrictions....oh yeah, and all my comm-major sisters would run it with me.

Pay off all my ASA sister Cassie's debts and loans and buy her a house and car. It has taken her forever to get through school because of her financial situation and most people would have given up and quit long ago. And she deserves to live the good life and have some fun. :)

I'm another one who would do animal stuff - the no-kill shelter here has already had one woman endow an "animal haven" (basically a big, wonderful farm) where old and hard-to-place animals can go. I'd love to have another one.

Optimist Prime 10-16-2001 11:51 PM

I would make my own movies and be in them. Lift weights, and practice martial arts. Yeah. And I'd have lots of sex. Cuz i'd be rich. So there.

Hehe. And one of the other characters says "If I had a million dollars, I'd have two chicks at once. because chicks dig guys with money."

"The point of the exercise is to see what you would really want to do if you didn't have to work"
"yeah, well that's stupid, because no one would ever want to clean up shit for a living"

I love that movie :D

shadokat 10-17-2001 02:06 PM

I'd buy a major league baseball team and be the first woman manager :) I'd also love to buy a bar, a pretty one with dualing piano guys and good food.

Dejajeva 10-17-2001 03:27 PM

I'd probably just finish school without having to worry about working to pay my car payment or pay my insurance or pay my tuition...and I could do normal things on friday and saturday nights=) like what normal, non-working people do. Then after I finished school, I'd work as a connsiarge. i cant spell that, but...yeah.

lol

Jess

James 12-22-2003 01:25 PM

bump

Dionysus 12-22-2003 01:36 PM

I would work for the CIA.
