"Sorority Wars" on Lifetime this Saturday

I don't know if someone has already posted about this but the "Sorority Wars" original Lifetime movie will premiere this Saturday 10/17 and repeat on Sunday 10/18 and Monday 10/19 at 9pm.

http://www.mylifetime.com/on-tv/movies/sorority-wars

There is also a list of celebrity sorority women that you may not have known were in a sorority:

http://www.mylifetime.com/on-tv/movi...rority-sisters#

I have to admit, though often corny, a side of me likes the high school/college movies. So I will be watching. :o

Apparently there are famous people from Phi Beta Phi and Kappa Alpha Kappa sororities. Best part is they got Phi Pi wrong the first time but right the second.

IlovemyAKA 10-16-2009 10:45 PM

oooh, I'm setting the recorder! lol

I remember when they were filming (at least part of) this movie close to my hometown; a girl from my high school class got to be an extra.

sigtau305 10-17-2009 11:49 AM

I'll have to check it out.

AXiDTrish 10-17-2009 11:06 PM

I actually enjoyed the movie and it had a good ending too. Funny how they said alumnae membership is so political....because it IS!

AlphaFrog 10-18-2009 07:03 AM

I watched it and had mixed feelings. They managed to sling around every rush/standards term there is - but I feel like they got a surprising amount of them (somewhat) right. I feel like the two biggest inaccuracies that could potentially confuse PNMs is how they handled what should have been a COB thing (with them "accepting her as a late rush") and the fact that their first and only ceremony seemed to be initiation.

PS...I knew "Gwen" looked familiar, but I actually had to look up why - she's the girl from Center Stage. I think she looked a little different and was hard to place because in most of CS, her hair was pulled back, and in SW it was down.

navane 10-18-2009 01:36 PM

I watched this movie last night - it was pretty decent! I didn't quite catch the end though; my roommate came home and started chatting with me during the last 10 minutes or so. It's a Lifetime movie, so I assume it had a happy ending. :)

If you saw the movie, here are some of the things I noted as well as some of my thoughts:

- Use of "alumni" incorrect at the alumnae meeting. (Helloooo..."alumnae")

- The Delta Beta Theta alumnae said "endorse" instead of recommendation when reviewing recs at a tea party.

- I thought that the student organization fair scene was fairly accurate with all of the tabling and stuff. They must have sent people out to campuses in order to take notes.

- Delta Beta Theta - I saw that their table was pink and white with "carnations" hanging from the booth. I thought, "Oh please tell me this won't be a rip-off of Gamma Phi Beta." LOL

- I liked that Katie touted the positive aspects of Greek life to her roommate

- Delta invited PNMs to a fraternity party with alcohol (and Katie even asked about the rules being broken!)

- Hahaaha.....Gamma Rho Alpha's music/skit was too funny. (The nerdy girls who couldn't sing!)

- Uhm....Kappa Theta Xi's recruiment skit involved blindfolding PNMs?

- Delta's member selection procedure was "interesting"; they ditched the photos of the girls who weren't cute.

- Kappa line dances at their pref and Delta's pref included a party with jello shots?

- The Kappa sister's words of advice on accepting a bid were good. She advised Katie to accept a bid from the house where you like what they stand for because you will end up standing for those values too.

- The rush infractions hearing ("standards" as they called it) was like a trial with everyone there!

- Random side note - was that the world's biggest dorm room or what?

- One of the best lines from the whole movie: One Delta alum said to the other, "That's not Delta behavior!" :D

.....Kelly :)

Or...Phi Mu. Rose and White are our national official colors. The rose carnation is our flower, as well. At least, it has been since 1852.

Yes, Phi Mu too! Luckily, the crest and badges didn't look like either of ours.

Watched the movie last night before SNL came on, then watched some of the rerun once SNL was over, haha! I thought it was great and Lucy Hale was wonderful as the lead character! Her acting and singing were great!

I wish we could have seen more of their formal recruitment, but I understad that it's only a movie and there's only two hours to cram in a whole semester's worth of footage.

chitown 10-18-2009 10:59 PM

I'm fairly certain that there were no jello shots at any of our pref parties.

And sidenote- did anyone else find it weird that the main girl's parents were at every single greek event, with their cameras?

Maybe this took place at eagesbaby's school? If I remember that disaster correctly they were allowed to have alcohol :p

AKA_Monet 10-19-2009 12:30 AM

Welp, I'm just glad they had to right Greek letters on everyone's houses.

Another interesting tactic was the bullying taking place.

The ceremony part confused me and the COB was off, but I have to agree. They did seem to get a lot of things right.

Overall, I enjoyed it. I like the "you know your people and you're our people."

YES. I believe they were mocktails and mockeritas specifically.

On a random note: Why are dorms on TV shows and in movies always like 3432422 times bigger than they are in real life.

When I was younger, there was no one in the world who could tell me that my dorm wasn't going to be the size of the ones on Boy Meets World/Felicity/etc.

And have you seen the dorm rooms on the Target/WalMart "back to school" commercials? I wonder if peeps actually think that their room is going to be big enough for a queen sized bed.

Confused PNMs from a Lifetime movie should be taken as seriously as confused BGLO aspirants from "School Daze" and "Stomp the Yard."

Not. :)

Actually, my dorm room didn't look all that small in comparison to what's portrayed on TV/movies.

Sure, we only had room for twin sized beds, but we also had room for a couch. And we got very creative with making space where space could be made.

Many of my friends from HS were jealous of how large my dorm room was.

Now, the bedrooms in the on-campus apartments were another story!

It may be because I had a single every year when I lived on campus. Since it was a single, my room was always really small. I made up for it by having my own bathroom though. I gladly traded a few square feet to avoid the "community bathroom" experience.

Zoey 101 was filmed at Pepperdine, and they used the lounge in one of my old dorms as Zoey's dorm room. I suppose they need to do that in order to fit the camera equipment and everything.

Something that bugged me about the movie (beyond the jello shot prefs and blindfolds) was their pronunciation of Xi. They kept saying "z-eye". I've heard "z-ee" most often and the occasional "k-z-ee", but never "z-eye". Is this just an alternate pronunciation I haven't heard, or were they totally off? Would love it if someone could clear that one up for me.

But overall, yeah- not a bad movie. I wish the recruitment scenes and "late bid" info was ever so slightly more accurate, but it was entertaining and not a bad way to spend an early Sunday morning after I took my husband to the airport before the crack of dawn!

Zeye is the pronounciation I have heard the most actually. I occasionally hear zee, but never the Kzee.

"KSee" is the Greek pronunciation. "Zee" is the anglicized pronunciation. "Z-eye" is the Americanized pronunciation (just like "p-eye" (P), "f-eye" (F), 'k-eye" (C) or "s-eye" (Y)). Personally, I've always heard "z-eye" except from the groups that actually have the letter in their names (like Alpha Xi Delta).

LucyKKG 10-19-2009 03:03 PM

I watched it and mostly liked it. I've hated most other sorority movies I've seen, so that's really saying something! I posted on my FB status that I was watching it and made some comment like, "Yeah, this is totally how recruitment goes...NOT!"

Weird about Katie being the only legacy and only having one ceremony. Ohhh many of those girls were so unpanhellenic!

Psi U MC Vito 10-19-2009 03:06 PM

You have to remember though, a lot of none greeks think of initiation when they think about ritual if they do at all.

thetygerlily 10-19-2009 03:35 PM

When I learned the Greek alphabet, I learned it as "zee"- we didn't have any groups with Xi in their names on my campus, so that was pretty much my only introduction. I have heard one reference to using "kzee", a Kappa chapter that has Xi in its name and always pronounces the chapter name as such.

Is "zeye" a regional thing perhaps? Kind of like pronouncing Italian as "it-alian" vs. "eye-talian"? I was completely thrown off when I heard some people say that in college (in the midwest), I had no idea anyone said that (had never heard it in the northwest).... maybe it's like that?

For Phi, I have heard both. Like Pheye Delta Theta and Alpha Phee. I think someone told me that it can change when it's at the end of the group? Or maybe they were just making that up and it's arbitrary :D

Didn't mean to turn this into a pronounciation thread, but I am quite curious. I will at least remove Xi from my list of "WTF??" items in the movie since some of you have heard it frequently!

pearlbubbles 10-19-2009 03:48 PM

I think it's "ee" after a vowel and "eye" after a consonant. That's what I was told when I asked. But then I don't really know what to do about Alpha Phi Delta, for instance, because I've always heard it pronounced "pheye," but it comes after a vowel.

That's a Greek Urban Legend. I did a ridiculously long response but for some reason it disappeared. Everyone is probably better off. :D

I'll just refer to this old post of mine.

I wouldn't consider it a regional thing. The pledge manual for Theta Xi Fraternity gives zzEYE as the pronunciation. So do the websites of lots of Greek Life offices. (My fraternity's manual does as well, FWIW.)

It's a matter of preference. Alpha Xi Delta prefers zee. Theta Xi apparently prefers zeye. Alpha Phi prefers fee, while almost all other orgs that use F prefer fie.

Psi U MC Vito 10-19-2009 04:44 PM

I would like to mention I noticed the same thing with Upsilon. Psi U learns to pronounce it Yoop-Si-Lon while most greeks I have met pronounce it Up-Si-Lon

rhoyaltempest 10-19-2009 06:08 PM

Anyone see the other one? "The Haunting of Sorority Row"

I watched some of it but will have to watch again...missed the ending. I guess Lifetime is on a roll with the sorority movies lately...there was another a while back but I can't remember the name.

Well, I guess that makes a lot more sense than pronunciation changing based on being behind a consonant or a vowel, lol. I wonder why different organizations choose the different pronunciations though...

I only watched the opening scene, then changed it. I was home alone, and I'm not crazy about horror movies. The stuff about the beginning of Hell Week was stupid though. It's stuff like that that makes me hate sorority movies.

Awesome- thank you MysticCat! I didn't realize that all of the "eye" letters are "ee" in Greek, such as Pi and Chi. Now comes the fun part of remembering how everyone says it.

////

I now have the almost uncontrollable urge to go get every Greek (GLO-style Greek, that is) movie, tv show, and book and make a massive marathon. But alas I will finish off the workday instead like a good girl.

Right. Meanwhile, in Greek, the U is more like the German ü, so that it comes out sounding like a cross between OO-psi-lon and EE-psi-lon.

Preference as to whether they wanted to use the American or Greek pronunciation. I've always imagined some good Greek professor telling the founders of Alpha Phi, "you know, the correct way to pronounce that letter is . . . ."

You can include in the "ee" letters I, which the sisters of Sigma Alpha Iota would tell you is EE-ota. (In Greek, it's actually closer to Yota.)

You'd be surprised how many names of Greek letters are not pronounced in Greek like they are in English.

No. Eye-talian is just wrong. They are not from Eye-taly. Although it's actually more EE-talian rather than it-alian. I in Italian = "E" sound in Latin-based languages.

I read somewhere that Sorority Wars is a pilot for a TV series. Hope the script writers are reading GC to get the feedback :)

AXiDTrish 10-20-2009 05:44 PM

I totally see how it could've been a pilot. I actually think it would be good show.

Sadly though, it could be because I love Greek and think another show about Greek Life would allow me to continue reliving my collegiate experience each week. How pathetic am I? ;)

OleMissGlitter 10-21-2009 11:04 AM

Sorority Wars was okay but The Haunting on Sorority Row was pretty lame.
