They tried it, they love it. You tried it, you don't.

I didn't know how to title this because there's only so much you can get in a "title" line of a thread. Have you ever eaten something that someone said was absolutely delicious, but when you tried it, it was either gross or it wasn't what you expected? What are some foods that you've tried that you thought were going to taste like what someone "over exaggerated" to be SO good, and it wasn't all that great?

I'm asking because on Thursday while I was in line at the grocery store, a lady in front of me was buying a bag of "Popcorn Indiana" and I asked her how it tasted. She said it tasted just like the movie theater popcorn, much better than microwave popcorn. She just kept going on and on at how good and buttery this popcorn was. So I got out of line to get a bag for myself. On the bag it says "Popcorn Indiana Original Movie Theater Popcorn". It also has a picture of a tradtional old movie theater on it, which really gave me the impression that it would taste just like she said it would. I just now tried it. It doesn't taste anything like movie theater popcorn. It's not like it's gross or anything, it's just that it has no flavor to it whatsoever. I can't even taste any butter on it, and it's slightly salty. It's probably going to eventually go bad, because I know I'm not going to eat it.

Beer.

I've tried and tried.

Just don't like it.

I'll stick to Sky and Cranberry.

I'm with you - beer just doesn't appeal to me, and YES I have probably tried (fill in the blank).

AGDee 09-19-2009 06:15 PM

Many of the foods that are trendy right now.. Thai, Indian, Sushi.. I just don't like any of them. And, my digestive system can't handle Thai or Indian either. Coffee also. I love the smell, I hate the taste.

I went to a beer tasting last weekend, trying to find a beer I really liked. Some of them were better than others.. I liked a few, but I still prefer many other drinks to beer, like Bailey's, wine, cranberry and vodka, strawberry margaritas/daiquiris

WCsweet<3 09-19-2009 06:41 PM

Most alcohol. I really dislike the taste of hard liquor, which probably isn't a bad thing. I've tried a lot, so yes I probably have tried your favorite, but I seriously gag when I take a shot or have a mixed drink. My mixed drinks have to be a splash of alcohol and 99% everything else.

Cottage cheese and cheesecake for me as well.

PrettyBoy 09-19-2009 06:49 PM

I'll do the reverse. I tried chitlins. I love them, most folks don't. The crazy thing is most folks never even tried them and won't eat them because they know what they are. That's too bad. Chitlins, mmmm good.:D

AOII Angel 09-19-2009 06:49 PM

I am with KSUViolet about the beer and AGDee about the coffee...I've tried soooo many times to be a beer and a coffee drinker (maybe I should try them together...hmmmm) but just don't get it! And I really have tried every type of beer out there...I just don't like that bitter flavor. Now wine and hard liquor...yum!

Most people will eat sausage, though, and they don't even think that the sausage is just stuffed in "chitlins"! I've never had them, but if anyone offered them to me, I'd try them. I'll try just about anything. Hell...I've eaten brains for God's sake!

MidwayManiac 09-19-2009 06:51 PM

Guinness Stout. English room-temperature lagers. Even the darker Sam Adams. I like my beer cold and light-colored, despite how many times people tell me the aforementioned items have more "taste".

I think I like comfort food because caviar and escargot don't do anything for me.

Soups that are supposed to be cold.

I'm like you, I'll try anything. At first I wouldn't try cow tongue, but now I want to try. I never had them, but I heard pig brains are good as hell.:D

KSUViolet06 09-19-2009 06:54 PM

Sushi.

Yes, I have been to all of the million places around here that you say have great sushi.

I still just don't like it.

Tongue is good...very tender, after all, it gets a good workout! I think brains are pretty bland. My husband loves lamb brains, but he's Greek and that's their thing! I love sweetbreads, foie, chicken hearts (discovered this in Brazil at one of their Brazilian steakhouses), but most other organ meats are a little too strong for me. I'm going to Tokyo next month and want to try raw bear...my husband wants whale :O! I had reindeer in Sweden, but it was like eating beef *yawn*

LOVE Sushi! For me, though, it has a lot to do with wasabi. I love wasabi! Also, I love raw salmon. The fat in salmon actually melts at the temperature of the human mouth so that when you eat raw salmon, it melts in your mouth and floods your mouth with flavor. I also really love the different textures in good sushi. The rice, when done well, is amazing. I could eat sushi twice a week.

KSUViolet06 09-19-2009 08:04 PM

Other things people seem to love that I hate:

Hot dogs. Everyone wants them at sporting events. They're gross.

Eggs, omelets, etc.

White Castle.

DreamfulSpirit 09-19-2009 08:06 PM

For me its beer and coffee. I agree with the others above, about how coffee smells great, but I hate the taste. I also don't like how beer is fermented wheat, and that's just gross to me, but yes I have tried it and I can't stand it. I'm much more in to mixed drinks...and the less alcohol I can taste the better!

I also don't really like seafood, although I've gotten better with crab meat.

ComradesTrue 09-19-2009 08:11 PM

Count me among those non-coffee and non-beer drinkers. There is plenty of alcohol that I do like, it is just that beer is not among them.

The other thing that I can't stand is Ranch Dressing. Don't want it on salad, don't want it with pizza/breadsticks, don't want to dip my veggies in it. Just don't want it.

tld221 09-19-2009 08:48 PM

Chocolate ice cream. Just not a fan. Love other chocolate desserts (except pudding), just not that.

Mushroom. Flavor is good, the actual mushroom, no deal. it needs to be minced or something - in chunks, not a fan.

YES.

As long as I've been living here I still don't get it. Add the Browns in too, and the Cavs.

Ohio peeps can flame away.

Other stuff I don't get:

Sonic. We finally got one and I was so disappointed.

Buffets (Golden Corral, Ponderosa, etc). Gross.

Grey's Anatomy. I am probably the only 20something in the world who doesn't watch it. I tried, I'm just not into it.

YES.

I like beer, sushi, chitlins, and most of the other stuff in this thread lol

I'm not a big fan of sweets, though. Whenever I say no to a piece of candy or cake, people will look at me like I've grown a second head.

ETA: KSUViolet types faster than I do lol. Ohio State non-fans unite!

KSUViolet06 09-19-2009 09:30 PM

Some other stuff everyone loves that I don't:

TWILIGHT. I'm sorry peeps. I just don't like it.

Rascal Flatts, Sugarland, et. al. Again, just don't.

Lamb anything... chops, leg of lamb. Pork, also. However, I love vegetarian sausage.

MidwayManiac 09-19-2009 10:30 PM

As for non-food items --

I just can't get into "Phantom of the Opera".

(I love sushi and coffee).

You don't like hot dogs? First time I've heard of that. I thought everyone liked hot dogs.

KSUViolet06 09-19-2009 11:25 PM

Nope, hate hot dogs. Gross.

*The American Pie movies (or anything with a similar style of humor).

*Scary movies. Just can't handle them. EVeryone seems to love them.

*Lunch meat/cold cuts. Ew. Everyone brings lunch meat sandwich-y stuff to work and I have tried. I just can't stand the stuff.

*Champagne. Again, I'll stick to my cran and Sky. Nothing else. Thank you.

*Fried chicken. Everyone LOVES it and I think it is gross. Shoot me. I gagged anytime my parents brought home KFC or anything like that.

*All things vampire like Twilight and True Blood. Sorry.

*Oatmeal, Cream of Wheat, Grits, anything with that type of consistency.

*Any children's cereals like Lucky Charms, Captain Crunch, etc. Ew.

*French toast. Yuck.

Sorry, I am super picky and hate most breakfast food, lol.

ree-Xi 09-20-2009 12:18 AM

On my gag list:

Hot dogs - love the smell but won't eat them
Sausage, Salami, Ham, Pork (though I will eat a slice of bacon a few times a year)
Beer - can't even stand to smell it
Cottage cheese
Oatmeal or anything of that texture
Mushrooms -slimy!
Egg Nog
Fish of any kind
Hummus, onion or any other dip
Nutrasweet/aspartame - gives me head and belly aches

DreamfulSpirit 09-20-2009 12:28 AM

Ok...guess I get to expand my list:

-Beer

-Coffee

-Rap/Hip Hop and most country music (there's a few artists that SOME of their songs are ok)

-"Grey's Anatomy" (Never been able to get into the show)

-Hot Dogs (got sick on them once, haven't really been able to eat them since)

-Seafood (I'm starting to expand...but very slowly, probably will never really truly like seafood)

-Ice Hockey (and I know this sounds weird coming from a Canadian, but I think its sooo boring!!)

-Chunky tomatoes (I like ketchup, marinara sauce, things like that...but if its gonna have big chunks of tomatoes, or big pieces of raw tomatoes, I don't like it)

-Bananas (I don't like their texture)

-Movies that are supposed be funny based off of stupidity (Not another teenage movie, dude where's my car, etc)

*LOL those are the first ones that popped in my mind, if I remember any others...I'll add to the list!

You would HATE Seattle. We have a ton of thai, indian and sushi restaurants, and a coffee shop on every corner...or even several on a corner. Though if you like tea you could substitute that.

PeppyGPhiB 09-20-2009 01:56 AM

Truffles (fungi, not chocolate)
Foie gras
Shellfish (living in Seattle, I put up with hell for this)
Edamame
Soy milk
Raw tomatoes, tomato soup
Whisky
Gin
Martinis (though I do love olives)
Frappucinos
Curry
Andrew Lloyd Webber
Most hip hop music
Pot
Slumdog Millionaire (it was a good movie, but I didn't think it was as great as everyone else did. And I felt like it was pretty exploitive of the people and community who starred in it)
Grey's Anatomy
America's Next Top Model

nope, not everyone. i found lord of the rings to be scary. i couldn't make it past the first one. :o

i also hate beer. i thought i'd like corona cuz i saw all my friends loving it and they have similar tastes to me...nope. i hate all beer.

cheerfulgreek 09-20-2009 07:53 AM

My dad used to eat raw oysters. They looked so good when he would eat them. I tried one and the slime made me gag.

Ditto to all of the above, except for Sonic. Never had their food, but love the drinks there. In addition:

Sausage, Lamb, Red Meat
Burger King, both the food and that horrid King mascot of theirs
Country Music--old school and the garbage called country today. Ugh.
Grits
Law and Order, CSI, etc.
E.T. (yes, it of the movie and Reece's Pieces. Complete and utter overkill.)

MidwayManiac 09-20-2009 10:51 AM

Because it is Sunday and I heard my neighbor's weed whacker --

Gardening and all forms of yard work. Some people find peace pulling weeds and planting bushes. They love feeling nature run through their fingers. Taking something wild and turning it into something beautiful gives them great pleasure.

Not me. I hate every second of it. I've tried. I much prefer a concrete jungle.

ThetaDancer 09-20-2009 11:56 AM

I am an extremely picky eater so I won't even get into most of the foods I can't stand that everyone else loves. But I will say:
*Panera
*Gin
*Grey's Anatomy
*Twilight/True Blood/anything of that nature
*Spinning classes

DSTRen13 09-20-2009 12:04 PM

Super-chocolately foods (chocolate frosted chocolate cake, chocolate ice cream, etc.).
Oysters - just EW.
Mixed meat food (I can handle chicken OR seafood OR venison, etc., but don't start putting them all together in one dish - that's gross. Stick with one meat product, use it sparingly, and move on.)
Food fried beyond recognition (I especially hate fried okra).
Really mushy vegetables cooked with chunks of fatty meat (just steam them, please!)

Now, I live in the deep South. Most things that everyone around me just loves to death and serves at just about every occasion fit into at least one of the above categories!

AOII Angel 09-20-2009 12:26 PM

Wow...we have some picky eaters on GC!

I hate fast food! I'm a food snob!

Elephant Walk 09-20-2009 04:29 PM

Alot of my friends love weed, but I've never been a big fan.

KSUViolet06 09-20-2009 04:43 PM

Hookah and hookah bars. I don't know if this is just an Ohio thing or what, but alot of people love it and think it's so cool. It's gross.

While we're at it, let's add cigarettes to the list. Smoking is gross.

Bachelorette parties involving strippers and penis-shaped EVERYTHING.

Wow, according to this thread, I pretty much hate everything. I'm ok with that.

ZTAngel 09-20-2009 04:49 PM

Any pork products. Bacon, sausage, ham, etc. I find them all to be nasty. Except for baby back ribs. OMG....I could eat those everyday and be happy.

lovespink88 09-20-2009 05:00 PM

I totally agree with a bunch of the stuff already mentioned, especially

- Sushi (I mean... I guess I don't hate it. I gave it a fair shot, and tried it. It was okay, but I have NO idea what the big fuss is about)
- Chipotle
- Grey's
- Twilight...horrible, just horrible
