The Verb "to frat".

So my question is simple - What is the meaning of the verb "to frat".

I saw it used as "xyz group frats hard". Does this mean parties, hazes, wears preppy clothes or simply acts like a Fraternity is perceived to act? Is this a negative or a positive?

I've heard it in three contexts: "partying hard," "dressing fratty," and "acting stereotypically (usully negative)." These descriptions are generally used for three very specific fraternities on campus, or specific people within organizations who fall under the above mentioned definitions.

With this in mind, usually the definition is simply implied by context. With specific people, though, the "stereotypical" definition has been used as a positive thing. It's really all contextual; and for the people, at least, the definitions vary depending on whether a friend or a Greek bystander is making the comment.

It's kind of like smurfing, but you're fratting instead.

That's the first thing I thought of when I saw the OP. Anyone I've ever heard use it as a verb is pretty much a douchebag.

WCsweet<3 09-14-2009 07:40 PM

The only time I heard it as a verb was in the context of partying.
"I heard the XYZ chapter frats harder than the frats."
I thought it was dumb then and I still do.

I still have never heard this phrase (or "sorostitute" for that matter) used IRL. I don't know how folks come up with this garbage...

First time I heard it was at one of our SigEp convention things and some pledges said 'get your frat status up!!'

I hope most of those pledges didn't get initiated. Ugh.

Wow. Get your pledges in line lol

No, the only time I've heard these terms is on GC. Apparently, they're they're popular lexicon around these parts. I still don't see myself EVER using those terms. Ever.

I bet there was a lot of fratmosphere in the room. The fratitude is contagious.

ONLY cause he was/is.

pshsx1 09-15-2009 12:37 AM

We use 'sorostitute' and 'whore-ority' to make fun of each other when we're hanging out. It's never used as a serious insult.

Another reason I home one specific pledge wasn't initiated was because he was pledging as a Senior and his plan was to be a professional college student since his parents were paying for it. I think it'll finally hit him when he's a 40 year old frat boy living in the dorms, working at Taco Hell.

twinkle555 09-15-2009 01:07 AM

I heard this as something totally different....

I was talking to a friend of mine who is an Iota sweetheart and I told her I left my sunglasses in my chapter room...the next day they were gone..and she goes, "Oh you got fratted!"

NKUNorse24 09-15-2009 11:37 AM

I hate any term going along with "frat", not a connotation I would want representing me or my fraternity.

I hate when people use it.

When I grow up, I hope I'm as cool as you are.
