Question!(Updated & Thanks!)
 

Hi all,

This is my first post on the forums and I was looking for some advice. My University just finished their formal recruitment(today was bid day) and due to other things, I ended up not participating in Rush. I was kind of bummed because I am a junior transfer, so I wasn't too sure if it would even be worth trying to rush later on.

Anywho, my school just welcomed a new sorority and the representatives opted to pull out of our formal recruitment and hold their own activities in the weeks to come. It was stated that they wanted to get a nice founding chaptergoing and with girls from all academic classes. The sorority itself is one that I'm interested in and would like to learn more about..so my question is..should I consider trying for this? and if anyone has experience with being part of a founding chapter. I guess I'm just curious if the processes are similar to a typical rush, in the sense of extending a bid to girls or ?

I won't really know much of anything until they announce exactly what's going on, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask..just to see what others might know. :)

Semi-Update:

Well, this week is almost over..and I am anxious for the next to begin. So far I've heard 80ish girls have signed up for interviews or are at least interested, which I think is amazing, but doesn't help the nerves any, hahaha. Aside from that, I've been making sure to ask plenty of questions so everything is clear before I go in for my interview. I do have a question for you ladies here, though. Do you have any tips to offer as far as interviewing goes? Deep down I know I'll be fine, but I want to put my best foot forward!

Yes! I would definitely look into this. As a Junior, you will only have this last chance. You're interested in the sorority so...go for it!

There are a number of founding sisters on GC who can tell you about the process. I'm not one of them so I'll just support you in your decision. :)

It is normal for a colonizing group to participate in the first round of recruitment and then not have any additional functions until after formal recruitment. There will probably be an informational event, t hen interviews, then a pref style party and finally their own bid day. I'd certainly go to the informational meeting. Your Greek Affairs office should be able to tell you when and where that event will be.

I am also a junior transfer and my university has a new sorority opening up this fall. They have already held an info meeting and have started interviews with alums and people from the national office. I don't know if they will give me a bid or not but I think it is worth a chance because if I want to join a sorority this is about my one and only chance. I would say go for it. One concern I have is that it is hard to tell if I will like the girls who will be joining. A couple of the girls in my dorm are also involved and we have been kind of hanging out together and they are great but I don't know about the others. Another concern I have is that what happens if this start up is a big flop and I end up being a member of a failed attempt. There was quite a turn out for the info meeting and interviews but who knows. It doesn't cost you anything to check this out like I am doing. Good luck whatever you decide.

I agree with KSUViolet06. The chance of a colony/new chapter going under in the first few years is practically nil (other than risk management issues, I suppose). Starting a new chapter is a big time and financial commitment for any sorority and the new group will get a lot of hands on help.

I would definitely go for it! As people have said, it usually includes an event, and then interviews, then preference, then bids...

I know that in my experience (I have a long, weird sorority recruitment story, bear with me here) it was interviews by members of the national staff, they come in and set everything up. It isnt necessarily the same, however, across the board.

Starting a chapter is a lot of work, and it can be confusing, the staff is looking for Seniors, Juniors, and everything else to make up a good, varied class, and they are looking for well rounded women who can get a lot of stuff done (its a lot of work!)

As a Junior, this is, in my opinion, the best chance you have to be apart of a sorority, and you can have a lot of fun (if youre willing to put in the time) doing it!

They had a table set up today where you could speak to a few members that were helping to get everything going, and I had such a great conversation with one of the girls. I can definitely see myself fitting in there. It's going to work out a lot like a few of you mentioned. They'll be available to talk/give info all of this week, then next week we'll have consultations/interviews with the national staff and then we'll see who they choose to be founding members. After reading your responses, I'm so glad I did decide to go for this. I'll be sure to let everyone know how it turns out! :)

Just wanted to thank everyone again for all of your input, my consultation is tomorrow!! I have a little bit of nervous excitement going on, but hopefully everything will go well. :) I will know results for sure on Friday.. wish me luck! :]

Very happy for you! hope that your membership enriches your life as much as mine has. You will find friends in every GLO and make many connections everywhere. Last night at dinner I enjoyed the company of a ChiO and a TriDelt - both very funny women! As were their husbands (I mean, not the sorority/women part, but the funny part). Anyway...Congratulations and How Exciting!!!
