OHNOITSJESS's Recruitment From the Other Side
Here's a general recap of what has happened in this past year:
We were a local sorority with about 8 members, and became a colony of the national engineering sorority Alpha Omega Epsilon. We now have 14 members are hoping to gain at least 8 more freshman and sophomores. We've started handing out flyers to the females in their intro to engineering classes in various departments and are starting our "work week" next week! This is our first actual rush as AOE since last semester the girls were in the "half in-half out" batch (they joined the week before our colony installation so technically they were in the local sorority, but were not one of the founding members of AOE). This will be our "formal rush" and next semester will be similar to an NPC spring rush..... I already have my eyes (I guess you NPC'ers call it a "rush crush") on a few girls that I think will be great for us, and we've been hardcore getting ourselves out there (Working every student organization fair possible :)) I'm so excited :) The E-Board and I expect a lot more than 8 people to show up at recruitment events because of how we are throwing ourselves out there... Our theme is "A Tour Around New York" with each day being a different landmark/city in the Big Apple. Woot! |
I've really enjoyed following your story. I wish you all the best with your first recruitment as a colony!!! It sounds like you're already doing a really good job on PR.
|
Good luck, Jess!
We have pref tonight, which should be exciting. We start Informal right after which is where we get to do all the student org fairs. Good luck- you'll do great! P.S. I love that theme! |
Quick Update:
So... I didn't work info night tonight, but according to the president we had 6 awesome girls show up. I work info night tommorow and she said more girls would be attending!! More Tomm Night! |
Thanks for the update, it's appreciated!
|
Very excited to read this thread. Hope it goes well!
|
we had 8 more girls show up last night and they seem excited! 2 more wanted to come but one had a family emergency and another had a lab conflict.
so that brings the total of interested girls to 16! If all of them go through the recruitment process (and we accept all of them, which isn't guaranteed) we would more than double our numbers! just havng the possibility for doubling our size is exciting. Now we wait until monday (our first event) to see the actual turnout numbers :) sorry in advance for all the grammatical errors, i'll fix them when i'm not trying to get ready and make the bus :) |
and one more update (i wasn't execting another event to PR/ Recruit at)
we had (at least) 10 more girls give contact cards! that brings the total of interested members to 26!! i doubt that all of them will go through... BUT STILL! we're getting recognized! it is overwhelming... and uber-exciting.... and to think... i started it all :) |
Great news, Jess! It sounds like things are really coming along for y'all. :)
|
ugh i typed up an update but.......... it went away :(
i have a project decription to write (due tomm) but i'll write the update in 24 hours at the latest. |
Round 1 Game Night & Round 2: Philantropy Night
sorry, i got sick and the beau was injured during a flag football game :(
Round 1: Yankee Stadium We had 9 girls show up and it was a blast. We played sand volleyball and talked to girls the difference between a sorority an a general college organization (lifetime commitments! yaay!). I got hit in the nose with a volleyball but hey..... my sinuses were cleared. (3 or 4 more girls couldn't come b/c of work and labs) Overall they all seem to be excited! Round 2: The Subway We went to the Ronald McDonald house to do chores for them. We went in 2 shifts so idk what the total number of pnm's that were there. Overall we all had fun cleaning, and it showed the girls that we weren't just study :) Sorry they are short descriptions, i'm going to take a nap and hopefully i'll feel better :( Tonight : Interview Night |
I hope it isn't Swine Flu! Feel better!
|
Round 3: Interview Night, Round 4: Makeup Interview Night
So I’m feeling much better ... so its not the swine flu :) just allergies
Round 3:Wall St. I was sick so I didn't go to this night. 12 girls showed up and after this round is where we make our selections. Since we haven't officially handed out bid cards and done door decs, I’m not going to say how many were/weren't chosen. Round 3.5: Wall St. pt 2. Since interview night is really important and some girls had class/labs during the time, we set up a makeup interview night. 2 girls showed up, and the rest of the girls had a night off because of the hectic week. I went to this one and I loved the girls that I interviews (since there were only 4 we ended up doing it as a panel instead of our original "Speed date" method. Something an active interviewer said really touched me. When the PNM's asked why we joined a sorority (and I’m mine and the present Presidents case, why we founded it) this one active said she thought she wouldn't join a sorority but she came and had chemistry. As time went on she realized she admired every one of us and that we all had characteristic she admired, and that everyone in the sorority was a role model to her I left that event with a refreshed love for all my sisters Today is bidding (we go streamer doors and put a glitter-and-ribbon-ized dolphin on the doors of our newly adored) followed by a picnic at a park! Tomorrow is the induction ceremony and unlike most NPC’s AOE has a (pretty much) semester long candidacy period. I can say we've gone over our self-imposed quota! ;) |
Congratulations! Sounds like y'all did a great job with your recruitment!
|
Congrats on going over your (chosen) quota!
I can't wait to hear the details. |
I am so excited for you guys! That's great news and that's one requirement for a colony that you've knocked out of the park!
Make sure you e-mail the IEB with the news- they'll be ecstatic! |
Well I can say it now!
Alpha Omega Epsilon @ Texas Tech has 13 beautiful new babies!! Which brings our total members to 25!! We doubled our membership! But I have to get ready for induction this morning! Update aftet (maybe way after... UT Game is today so.....) |
Congratulations Jess! That's excellent!!!
|
Congratulations!! When my chapter had our first formal recruitment, we basically doubled the chapter, so I know how crazy that is. Yipeeee!
|
So we ended up 'losing' an active and one candidate dropped.... Which means we still doubled our numbers.
Flashback: On a side note I've been thinking about something that happened during my spring recruitment @ Jasmine (and it's always bothered me) I guess when I was in recruitment mode back then I just kind of wrote it off.... So my interviewer and I were talking and it was going well. The VP was floating and overheard my interviewers and my conversation about how I still live on campus because my parents will not let me bring my car for fear of damaging it (me or other people out of envy... the latter has happened before)... the VP asks me what kind of car I drive and I was like "oh..... um... a {insert name of luxury car here}..." at which she looks at the interviewer pushes her nose up and says OH... in a rude tone I know jasmines have girls from the "upper class" cities of Texas (of which I am not from) but why this reaction? She asked and I didn't really want to answer, and I didn't act like "OH I DRIVE A____________ HOW ABOUT YOU?" I tried to be polite and modest about it. After that my interviewer and I changed the subject and kept having a good conversation.... sorry for the randomness I see the Jasmines around a lot lately and I wanted to vent :\ |
I think the car thing is a lose-lose situation, personally. Whether you drive a 15-year-old Buick that you bought with your own saved-up money or a brand-spanking-new Lexus, it's just going to be not good enough in some circles, or too highbrow in others.
I *totally* understand about your parents' rule, though. My folks bought me a cute little car for high school graduation, and even though Houston was only 40 miles away from home and I lived on campus, they were so nervous to let me bring it to campus that they forbade it. |
Quote:
It may not be. Either way, what can you do about it now? |
the only thing i can do about it is try extra hard to not do that to our PNM's :)
I wasn't complaining, just wanted to get it off my chest. It's been bothering me. I don't hate the Jasmines or any other sorority that is on campus. I admire them for the strong sisterhoods they have and being strong nationally as they all are. I can only strive to make my colony (hopefully soon chapter) as strong as them on campus (maybe stronger... who knows?), and enhance the international org as a whole :) |

Actives in Purple, Candidates in Lilac (missing 3 Actives, 3 candidates) |
Just an update, we have 3 lovely ladies joining our sisterhood this fall :) I am so happy! I had my first full blown "rush crush" and she joined :D
They are intelligent, and beautiful and each brings something different to the organization. |
