Northern girl, southern school!

Hey everyone!
Reading recruitment stories has helped me SO much in what to expect for my own recruitment experience, so I decided that my story might help (or possibly entertain) others. Since I have made it INCREDIBLY obvious which school I attend, I will not be posting anything other than vague updates until the entire process is over (which is on the 10th).
A little bit of background information: I am from a state/region that rarely sends people to my particular school, so I was a little clueless about recruitment until I started doing research on the subject. Ultimately, I decided to rush because in high school I was very involved and social and I wanted a way to continue this in college. I am looking for a sorority that is very academic and has a strong sisterhood. A benefit of being from out-of-state is that I have no preconcieved notions about any of the sororities at my school, so I am able to keep an open mind. I have recs at a few sororites, but not all of them.
I have decided that my codes will be jean brands, because I am a denim addict. Don't worry, I don't own all of these, I just wish I did! :D There are ten sororities at my school (in no order whatsoever):
7 for All Mankind
Paige
Joe's
Hudson
Citizens of Humanity
True Religion
Rock and Republic
J Brand
MEK
William Rast
Also, my roommate and suitemate are also going through recruitment. For the purpose of this story, I will refer to them as Kristina and Sophia. So far, we have just had a sort of meet-and-greet where we were introduced to all of the sororities and their philanthropies. I met my recruitment counselors and I love both of them already--they are so sweet and upbeat!
Anyway, I have to get some work done on my neverending stack of homework, but I will be back to update as soon as I have something more to say. Thanks for reading!

brokengymnast75 09-03-2009 01:01 PM

Oh shoot I love most of those jeans! But I'm going to say Go Rast and R&R!

chitown 09-03-2009 01:31 PM

A family friend is an AXO at UNC so I want to root for them. But since I don't know, Ill go with Jbrand.

sceniczip 09-03-2009 03:21 PM

I'm going with True Religion and Citizens of Humanity.

LOVE UNC. Want to do my PHD work there. BF is a huge Duke fan though :p

That's me and my boyfriend, but the other way around!

scbelle 09-03-2009 05:54 PM

I was hoping you'd post your story! I can't wait to read more! I'm going with Paige or Joe's as those are the best jeans I've found by far for me. :D

Jimmy Choo 09-03-2009 07:44 PM

I always hope for a Tri Delta ending but since I don't know which one that is I'll root for 7 and Citizens. :D

gee_ess 09-03-2009 09:03 PM

I am rooting for Paige.

ASUADPi 09-03-2009 09:13 PM

I don't wear any of those jeans because they are to expensive for me. LOL. Either way good luck at recruitment at UNC.

gatordeltapgh 09-03-2009 09:52 PM

Of course I'd hope for an Alpha Chi ending - our chapter at UNC just won the Continuing Excellence Award. This award goes to chapters who have previously won the National Council Trophy and continue to show the highest level of achievement. FUN!

But for this story I will go with Rock and Republic!

Have wonderful time - all the chapters at UNC are great!:)

PS when your parents come to visit take them to A Southern Season for some yummy food!

DreamsComeTrue 09-03-2009 10:17 PM

Good Luck!!!!!
Silver is my favorite jeans brand but since it isn't on the list i'll root for 7 for All Mankind!

MerryGPhiB 09-03-2009 10:34 PM

What ever happened to good 'ol Levi's... I'm getting too old!!! :p

TarHeelHoney 09-04-2009 12:36 AM

Thanks so much for your support everyone! I went to my second meeting with my recruitment counselors this evening and had a great time. My roommate and I just finished making our nametags (they are required at UNC) and planning our outfits. Other than a small mishap involving a zipper of mine breaking (:eek::eek:), I think we are completely ready for tomorrow! If I am not completely exhausted tomorrow evening, I will be sure to update y'all.

pearlbubbles 09-04-2009 02:44 AM

Zippers breaking are the worst! I hope you got everything worked out! Good luck tomorrow!

(I also always secretly hope for a Tri Delta ending.)

tangelo212 09-04-2009 03:00 PM

Yay for your story! I so wish UNC had an Alpha Phi so I could be somehow involved, but oh well.

I was driving around Rosemary and Franklin today, and saw a few sorority members walking to their houses with outfits and bags in hand, and I really wish I could be doing recruitment too! It made me a little envious.

I checked the schedule and rounds go from 4pm to 11pm, and then 2nd round parties aren't until the 6th. Then there is another day off between round 3 (on the 7th) and Preference (on the 9th). That's really nice that they give you a few "breather" days! did they explain the rationale behind that at any of the meetings? I'm just curious because I can think of schools with many more chapters that don't have break days in-between rounds. Interesting!

It's a beautiful day today TarHeelHoney, hopefully it will be a beautiful night, and I wish you a successful and fun first round!

MandyPepperidge 09-04-2009 08:03 PM

I hope you wind up at my chapter, but I'm going to root for my favorite pair: Citizens of Humanity. :)

Good luck and go Heels!

TarHeelHoney 09-05-2009 12:21 AM

Hey everyone! It's late here and I'm super exhausted but I thought I should update y'all since you've been so supportive! I had the time of my life tonight and I am SO glad I decided to go through rush.

I'm not going to go into detail, but I'm just going to say that I ADORED True Religions, Rock and Republic, MEK, and Joe's (I seriously DID NOT want to leave these houses at all, particularily Rock and Republic). Other than that, I can honeslty say that there was not a single house that I would be disappointed to return to--every chapter seems so, so strong!

Anyway, I will be sure to update again on Sunday after the Financial/Skit night!

P.S. Some horribly immature boys drove around campus and pegged all of the rush groups with water balloons. It was so awful--several girls and I walked into the MEK house soaking wet.

MerryGPhiB 09-05-2009 12:43 AM

So glad you had such a great day! I look forward to hearing more. thanks for taking the time to let us all know. I look forward to hearing more on Sunday !

Jimmy Choo 09-05-2009 01:14 AM

I'm glad you had a great time!!!

UNCLei 09-05-2009 09:20 AM

Ahhh, I'm rushing UNC too, and I'm so excited to read your full story!! Glad it's going well. :)

FSUZeta 09-05-2009 09:55 AM

dad gum boys! don't worry about it though, i am sure that it has happened before, and the sorority members won't (and shouldn't) hold it against you.

TarHeelHoney 09-05-2009 03:32 PM

I just have a nagging question that's been in the back of my mind all day. If a girl says that she "can't wait to see you tomorrow" is that dirty rushing or just tactless? It made me feel a little uncomfortable but I wasn't sure if it was techinically against the rules or not. Thanks!

Also, good luck to UNCLei, I can't wait to read your story! Yay for Tar Heel rush stories!

KSUViolet06 09-05-2009 04:15 PM

Good to hear that you are having a good time, keep us posted.

About the comment: It's not something members should say (in my opinion-- because she may or may not see you tomorrow) but it may have just been a nervous slip-up on her part. Take it with a grain of salt (and not as "Oh sweet, I'm for SURE coming back here!')

TarHeelHoney 09-05-2009 04:23 PM

I actually ended up putting that chapter in my bottom cluster (for unrelated reasons) but if I do end up returning, I will be on the lookout for any other things that make me feel uncomfortable. It's definitely not weird enough that I feel like I need to talk to my rush counselor about it. Thanks KSUViolet!

angels&angles 09-05-2009 05:16 PM

That phrase was one that was on our "no" list to say, but it can be REALLY hard to say goodbye sometimes, and it slips out. As far as I know, no one has ever used it as a dirty rush tool. Dirty rushing is usually a lot more explicit ("We love you." "I can't wait til you're an XYZ!" "I'll see you here on Bid Day!"). I bet that girl regretted it the moment it came out of her mouth, but couldn't figure out how to take it back.

Not dirty rushing, just a careless error. It's something we're instructed not to say, but sometimes, things slip out.

Agreed.

Isn't that, like, a crime?

DreamfulSpirit 09-05-2009 09:39 PM

Although I'm an NCSU alum (GO WOLFPACK!), its cool to hear a local story...or at least two for right now! Good luck!

UNCLei 09-05-2009 10:10 PM

Good luck tomorrow TarHeelHoney!!

TarHeelHoney 09-06-2009 10:13 PM

Hey all! I've come down with a pretty nasty cold but I feel obligated to update everyone who has been supporting me through this process, so here goes.
Cuts were brutual this round. It was not uncommon to get only 4 invites to the round of 7. I even heard of girls that got 2 invites (or none :(). Many girls dropped out today.
Anyway, I recieved a less than full schedule and was disappointed to see that many of my top choices had cut me. However, I stuck it out and I am glad I did because I LOVED one of the houses I visited today (they were also one of my favorites yesterday) and had warm feelings towards the others.
I'm hoping for the best tomorrow, but at this point it's definitely out of my hands. And, in light of the heavy cuts, I am remember the frequently repeated GC wisdom: "It only takes one!"
Thanks for reading everyone!

UNCLei 09-06-2009 10:50 PM

Yikes, I did not know that! Still, it is so true - there can only be one in the end & all the others won't matter any more. So yay for the house you love! Plus, you'll most likely end up with friends in the other sororities thanks to rush, which is kind of cool. I'm sure you know this from Greek Chat and your own observation, but all our sororities support each other & get along. It's awesome!

Psi U MC Vito 09-06-2009 11:17 PM

^^^^ I really can't wait to see if they end up as pledge sisters.

Jimmy Choo 09-06-2009 11:33 PM

I hope you aren't picking up the H1N1 going around campus!!! :(

FSUZeta 09-07-2009 09:47 AM

i was just going to warn the girls to be aware of the flu symptoms and to go to the health center on campus is their symptoms fit that of the flu. in the mean time, lots of fluid, hot tea and chicken soup from panera will help. advice from a mom.

When I went through, I had a girl say "See you tomorrow! I mean... I hope I see you! I mean... maybe I'll see you?" It's just one of those holes you dig yourself into and there's no graceful way out of

MandyPepperidge 09-07-2009 09:25 PM

How has your Rho Chi group been affected by H1N1? I have several friends who are current recruitment chairs and they said girls are dropping like flies. Some PNMs are even wearing masks?! Yikes!!

TarHeelHoney 09-09-2009 11:31 PM

Hey everyone!
Sorry for the lack of updates on my part. Just so ya'll know, I had to miss House Tour/Philanthropy Day and Pref Night due to (you guessed it) Swine Flu.
Luckily for me, this has actually been a very common occurence this year, so I was still invited to TWO houses for Pref Night and was able to rank them over the phone with my Rho Chis. Even though I have to miss Bid Night tomorrow, I will (hopefully) be a new member of a sorority and will update everyone then!
Thanks for reading!

Wow, so sorry to hear you got the flu! Glad to hear that you still got some invites even though you were sick. I hope you feel better!

myopicsunflower 09-10-2009 12:03 AM

Oh my goodness! GET WELL!!!! I am so sorry you're sick! :(

On a happier note, I do hope that you get some good news, and I send good luck wishes along with healing vibes.

:)
