Ole Miss Sorority rush (need verification)
:confused:I have a close family member that is participating in Ole Miss Recruitment.
She is under the impression that due to the number of girls going through rush this year, that more than 500 girls will be "cut" due to quota limits. She was told that there were over 1400 girls that were registered for rush this year and quota could not be over 90 due to maximums that were placed on the sororities THIS year. Could someone familiar with the OLE MISS greek system confirm the following: a)the actual number of girls registered for rush b)likelihood that 500 girls will be released due to size limits **I was under the impression that since Ole Miss implemented regret with interest that the placement rate was around 90 percent (please correct me if I am wrong). |
This sounds like "rumor mill" type stuff. I would call the Greek Life Office or shoot them an email and ask.
|
That was what I was thinking but she did tell me that this was the information given to the PNMs during their pre-convocation meeting.
Why would inaccurate info be given to the girls by someone in the greek life office? I can only think of three possible scenarios: either they want to give them a reality check, scare them or the info they provided them is true. |
It's possible that the girls could have misinterpreted what was actually said (especially if you're getting it from an 18 year old girl who is nervous about the process).
I will say that Ole Miss is using the Release Figures Method that requires chapters to release a certain number of women each round. It does often make for heavier cuts early on, but at this stage in the game, no one even knows exactly how many (recruitment hasn't even started yet). So an exact number is impossible to give at this time. So any references to the number of women to be cut is purely speculation because chapters just don't know right now. If you are concerned, a call to Greek Life will straighten it all out. |

As a sorority advisor, staff member on campus, alumna of Ole Miss, etc: Here are my two cents. 1. Yes there will be heavy releases by some houses after first round. Ole Miss uses the new Release Figure Method and that is how the method works. It is based on the chapter's previous recruitments stats. So some of the "bigger" houses will have to release large numbers of PNMS. This process has helped tremendously as PNMs won’t be “strung along” with houses that really aren’t interested in them. 2. With 9 sororities and less than half doing heavy releases, there will be other groups to take a look at. As long as you maximize your options (meaning don't skip parties because you think you aren't interested and don't "suicide" one house) you should be fine. 3. There will probably be around 900 PNMs going through recruitment. If 500 girls were released that would mean quota would be around 44. That is not going to happen. Quota will be in the 80s, maybe 90s. There will be handful that are released completely out of recruitment, then some that will drop out too. 4. There are 9 wonderful sororities at Ole Miss. Tell your relative to go through with an open mind, relax, and be herself. 5. Also, I recommend that a PNM have a rec to each house. The deadline might have passed for some houses but it can't hurt to send one in since recruitment is 21 days away. 6. Also, Greek Life probably tells the PNMs to be prepared if they are released from 2 or 3 houses after the first round. I am sure they would rather prepare them for the heavy releases then not tell them at all. But just remember like the old Greek Advisor at Ole Miss said when I went through in 1996, "Rush is not a guaranteed process!" It is a mutual selection process and the PNM has to maximize her options! |
just because a pnm might not be invited back to a particular chapter, for whatever reason, does not mean that she won't be invited back to the others.
additionally, the choices that the pnm makes during the recruitment process impact her "success", so please don't think that (insert number of pnms here) will just be arbitrarily released from recruitment totally, just because there are too many of them. oops, olemissglitter and i posted at the same time and i yield to her expertise. thanks, omg! |

With RFM there are no Quota limits in place that would force X number of women to be cut. Rather Quota is determined by the number of PNMs that are attend Pref round divided by the number of Chapters participating in Formal Recruitment. (There is a bit more to it, but that's the general concept.) |
I am also going to agree with KSUVIolet and suggest you call the Greek Life office. Just ask them to explain the info that was given to the girls at their meeting since you are trying to help a young woman understand the process and need your own info to be correct. (that way you don't sound like a crazy mom or something).
Regarding the "mandatory" cuts, it is probably a good thing the pnms are being warned (although I agree that when you are 18 and stressed out,it is hard to fully understand the process). At Arkansas, the first round cuts (at least for one house) seemed/were heavier than usual and it knocked a lot of pnms off their feet momentarily (including the house who was given the unusually large number to release) so being forewarned can be of some help. |
Don't think so...

The women who spoke to us emphasized that it is perfectly normal to be cut from multiple houses, but if you maximize your options you will more than likely end up with a bid. Our Gamma Chis have been very honest with us since the beginning. :) |
Thanks White Rabbit
Well, I am very glad that you did not hear that 500 girls could be cut from
recruitment during the recruitment process. Did you hear the number of girls going throught rush by any chance? Also the best of luck to you during Rush/Recruitment. Thanks again for taking the time to help clarify- I will explain that another girl also going though did not get that information. |
There are currently about 840 PNMs signed up. So I don't think the numbers will go much higher (might get to 900). The deadline is tomorrow (9/4) so I guess 60 more could sign up, but I don't think it will go much higher.

Philanthropy Round parties begin on 9/23!
|
woo hoo!! please keep us posted.
|
There are 848 PNMs signed up, so not as many as I would have thought. I was thinking closer to 900. But that's still plenty of wonderful PNMS for 9 NPCs! GO GREEK at Ole Miss!
|
Woo Hoo! Go Ole Miss!
|
All is going well so far from what I have heard! One of my rec girls was invited back to the max amount of parties for skit! She wouldn't tell her mom (my coworker) which houses but she is very excited about Skit Parties tonight!
After work I drove by sorority row and the PNMs were going into their houses! The Phi Mus had on some cute pink dresses! The DGs had on some type of all black outfit! Those are the only two houses I could see from the street. It stopped raining for a while too so that is good! Tomorrow is pref! Bid Day will be here before we know it! |
Does Ole Miss only have three rounds? Open House, Skit, Pref? I have a rec girl down there and have been in touch with her mom (who was not Greek so I am not sure her info is totally accurate). It sounded like Open house was split over two nights...but I am confused.

Ole miss Water Parties started August 30th 9 houses
Philanthropy was over 2 days (Wed & THUR) 9 houses (4+5) OR (6 +3) Skit was tonite Friday 9/25 (Max 6 ) Prefs are Sat nite 9/26 (Max 3) (per my sister going thru rush) |
Thanks for clearing that up! I did not realize that the water parties had been held earlier.
Good luck to your sister! |
The rain has stopped for a bit!
I heard skit went well for everyone. The fire alarm went off as the AOIIs were doing their door song but it was just a false alarm, so no big deal! |
What time do they open Bids tomorrow? I heard they will pick up bids at the Gertrude Ford Center. This is my first year teaching at Ole Miss, and I sent in a rec for one girl who is a close friend of my daughter (both of my girls are Tri Delts at Alabama). I'm looking forward to tomorrow.
Thanks goodness it finally stopped raining! I saw the sun and the blue sky this afternoon ... had practically forgotten they existed!!! |
Were you a Kappa there?
|
Undergrad at the University of Florida. I have just moved here as an assistant professor.
|
ahhh very cool.
|
3pm from what I have been told is when they receive their bids. I will go over to the AOII house around 1:30pm. Parking will be crazy so if you can get dropped off that's always a good idea. They will block off Rebel Drive (where Chi O, Pi Phi, Theta, and AOII houses are) and Sorority Row (where Kappa, DG, DDD, KD, and Phi Mu houses are). I will also go over to The Lily Pad before then to pick up some goodies. They will be open for Bid Day.
|
I'll need to get a gift ... where is The Lily Pad?
|
Got it ... I googled it. I'm so new to town, I'm still trying to figure out how to "live" here!
|
Anxiously waiting to hear about my rec girl....
|
My rec went KD. She looked so pretty and confident today.
|
Any results available?
|
This is unofficial, but I believe that quota was 84. I do not know numbers for each group yet.
|
Quota was actually 83 (got that from someone in the Panhellenic Office).
AOII got quota plus for 90 fabulous new members! The chapter and new members are very happy! Everyone looked gorgeous and excited! Will post pics later. From what I know right now, 3 of my rec girls went AOII! Will have to wait to hear where the rest of them pledged. I heard there was a placement rate of 98%! I think all the sororities did really well! |

Note from an Ole Miss newbie: The Lyceum was a cool place to have the bid opening. I thought it was totally off the cute meter the way the Gamma Chi's revealed their letters to the PNMs. However, the way the Gamma Chi's seemed to be throwing the bids at the PNMs bothered me ... and it looked rather ungracious. When I pledged, and when my daughters pledged, we had either an auditorium or a stadium where the Rho Chi's had placed each bid. We had to sit on them until time when we all opened them at once. And rather than just expect all the girls to run to their new houses all alone, I will admit I liked the way at Alabama that there were sisters, with large styrofoam letters, to round up their newbies and take them en masse to the house.
I say this because, as I was walking to the KD house to visit with my rec and her parents, I encountered several young ladies making their way to either Sorority Row or Rebel Drive totally alone. I struck up a conversation with each who stopped running and panted near me. I wanted to try to help to make that journey more memorable by offering a word of congratulations. I've uploaded a video to youtube from today ... it's still processing. Will post the link as soon as it's valid. You might also watch my video of my older daugher carrying a letter to guide my younger daughter to the house where they would be sisters yet again. I totally thought that was cool that Leah led Becca to the Tri Delt house. |
