Do sororities do background checks?

Alright, before I ask my question, I don't need anyone to call me out for being stupid for doing what I did and that I don't even deserve to join a sorority anyway. I know what I did was stupid and wrong.

A few nights ago, I got caught by excise police for using someone else's ID to get into a bar, got arrest, got a ticket, and I'll have to go to court, and this is going to be on my record for 6 months.
Sorority rush is a few months away (I'm going to rush NPHC sororities)
I hear the rush process is only a few days to a week, but will I not be able to join b/c of what I did? I have other positive attributes, a decent GPA and have done community service. But will this one stupid thing I did mess me up? You can be honest as possible, but please no unecessarily rude remarks as I know plenty of girls already in sororities who used fake IDs to get into the same place and were lucky. I just need to know, will sororities do background checks?

Since I come from the time of the dinosaurs where computers couldn't check people out I have no idea whether the houses will or won't check people out. But since I am a mother let me offer this advice (which I think you understand based on your question): People make mistakes. If asked, own up to it and tell them (briefly) what you have learned from this experience. Why it won't happen again. And what you would do for your sister, if needed, to make sure that she won't make the same mistake.

Good luck with rush!

Senusret I 08-29-2009 01:30 PM

Each NPHC sorority has a memorandum of understanding with national and state law enforcement agencies which allows them to run your social security number (or sometimes just full name) through a database. This gives the sorority access to your police records. They WILL find out. Three out of the four immediately disqualify applicants for such offenses, and the fourth has pending legislation on the matter.

Good luck, though.

Geez, you sleep in and do some grocery shopping and you miss all the fun.

Good luck getting into a sorority with your criminal record.

Well, really, good luck applying for other things too.

50ccerfan 08-29-2009 05:21 PM

No, I just don't get why out of everyone that replied to this, only 2 people make sense in their replies? To ellebud and Senusret, I appreciate the info. Now to everyone else: maybe you should stop wasting thread space and get a life; you don't have to reply to EVERY thing that's posted just for kicks... I think I'm done now:)

You know, that probably about the worst insult I can think of. And yet, as dumb as LMN movies are, you can't tear yourself away, can you?;)

CutiePie2000 08-29-2009 06:35 PM

Hopefully the whole thing gets dismissed.

A criminal record can prevent you from doing all sorts of things, including getting a job (particulary those where you are in a position of trust or confidentiality), getting into law school, and travelling to other countries for a vacation.

Which one is it?

tri deezy 08-29-2009 06:45 PM

Lighten up! My little sister (biological) was arrested for the same thing and she's always been the angel of the family. She also graduated cum laude from an ivy league. Depending on where you live/ go to school, you might need an ID to basically have a life at all. My sister is a very respectable young woman and after her arrest she was able to get jobs at the Peace Corps, Sierra Club, and now a law firm just off wall street. To the OP- it can't hurt to try recruitment, like someone else said- just be honest:)

The Devil's Diary.

Stranger With My Face is next.

Jen 08-29-2009 06:49 PM

Stranger With My Face was based off the Lois Duncan YA novel of the same name.

KSUViolet06 08-29-2009 06:54 PM

Confession: I wasn't feeling well the other day and all I did was watch LMN movies.

The movies all seemed to have the same general themes going on:

*I can't have a baby. Oh hey, my neighbor/friend/whoever is having one. I'll knock her out and steal hers because I'm crazy like that. What do you mean this isn't my baby, officer?

*I'm a teen who just moved to a new town and I want to fit in with the cool/rich/whatever kids at school. The head "mean girl" of the group hates my guts and tries to make my life miserable. Until we are trapped in a cave/stuck on a school field trip/stranded on an island together. She then reveals that she really isn't all that mean after all and is really insecure. Then we become bffs and get out of our dilemma together.

*I work too much and don't have any time with my kids or hubby. So I hire a nanny. My family LOVES her and that makes me feel like crap. Then she becomes crazy obsessed with my family and tries to turn them against me (by telling my kids I'm going to leave my husband and send them to Borneo). When I find out, I fire her. She comes back and tries to kill us all, and I push her out the window (and vow to never neglect my family again as we walk off into the sunset).

The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rocks the world, KSUViolet.

DrPhil 08-29-2009 07:01 PM

I love Lifetime and LMN movies. :) I watch them when I work from home and on weekends.

Their "scorned other woman" weekend last weekend (or the weekend before) was darn good.

This one has just gotten gross. Her teeth have fallen out and she's vomiting green stuff.

I've seen that one!

The one with the book in which everything you write comes true.

Creepy. I cringed when she wished that the cheerleader would break both of her legs, ow.

,

Yeah, these things won't narrow down which school you're at in Indiana at all. Being rude to NPHC members here is pretty danged stupid. Even I know that and I'm in the NPC.

I'd be much more concerned about other legal ramifications than prospective sorority membership.

Now back to your previously scheduled lane change.

She said she was interested in NPHC. They don't recruit like we do. Maybe your should re-read and realize this isn't your specialty.

50ccerfan 08-29-2009 08:50 PM

Alright first off, I wasn't being rude to anyone else before the comments began. Secondly, I'm reading about NPC and NPHC and now I learning they're two different councils b/c what do you mean , AOII LB93, when you say they don't recruit like we do?

and thank you tri deezy for the uplift :)

DrPhil 08-29-2009 09:03 PM

50ccerfan isn't really an NPHC aspirant.

50ccerfan 08-29-2009 09:15 PM

Ok, so I was totally confused b/c when sunsuret said 3 out of 4 sororities do background checks, I thought she meant to say the school she rushed her school had 4 sororities but I just googled it and she was talking about the four African-American sororities. I'm rushing NPHC, and we have about 15 of those sororities at my school.

I just confused why one has panhellenic( as one word) and the other is Pan hellenic( two words) yet they're totally different. This thread has just gone to shambles now... :/

No you're mistaken. The NPHC: National Pan-Hellenic Council represents 4 historically black sororities. You must be referring to the NPC: National Panhellenic Council, which you learn more about here http://www.npcwomen.org/ or by doing a search on the boards.

Obviously, you need to do a little more research, as they're two different councils. Good luck!

LOL. Sen, you're a woman now.

To 50ccerfan - there are not 15 NPHC sororities. That is probably why none of our replies are making sense to you. You need to do more research.

ETA: MexicanMami0286 types faster than I do :p

Actually it went that way a long time ago. And Sensuret is man who is in one of the NPHC or D9 fraternities.

Like I said.

Plus, 50ccerfan isn't too bright. This is why basic information should be sought before coming to GC for advice.

minDyG 08-29-2009 09:28 PM

If your school has 15 sororities of a specific council, then you're rushing NPC.

And starting your thread off on the defensive right out of the gate is like starting a sentence, "Don't take this the wrong way, but..."

Either way, good luck. Stuff happens and your mistake didn't harm anyone, so you shouldn't be punished for it beyond the extent of your court mandated penance. But people are judgmental and picky (especially with something as superficial as sorority recruitment--when you have just a few minutes to make a lasting impression), so who knows whether it will affect you. Just be honest yet discreet and hope for the best.
