Who wants some cake?
I might as well do a recruitment story, too, now that recruitment is over.
There are four houses: Gooey Butter Cake, Cheesecake, Apple cake, and Angel Food cake. For some reason "Fish cake" and "fruitcakes" I thought may give bad impressions. ;) The first day was a walk-through with parents. First we went to Cheesecake: It was a beautiful house and the girls were so nice. They were all wearing the same dress color. Next we were shown Gooey Butter Cake which was also a nice house, although the smallest physically so that some of the girls lived in dorms. The girls were wonderful. Third we headed over to Apple cake which was okay but I wasn't sure how I felt about the girls. The girl showing us around didn't seem very confident. Fourth was Angel Food cake and I felt the same about them as I did with Apple. **One thing that kind of unnerved me was at EVERY party they would ask "Any questions?" several times.** Yes, I had questions, but at the same time my mind would go blank or I didn't know which one to ask first! It seemed they were using it as a filler at the end of tours. The next day they had open house parties. I'll talk about them in the order I attended. Angel Food Cake: We walked through and I didn't really click with the girl. She seemed nice, but I couldn't see myself as being a sister with her, she was strange. I even briefly wondered if she were on drugs. I met a few of the other girls and they all struck me as a little weird. Nice, but weird. Not in a cute way, but more of an "uhh....okay?" way. They would ask questions such as how I felt sleeping naked. I was very uncomfortable. I was glad to leave. Cheesecake: I felt comfortable the moment I stepped through the door. The girl showing me around was amazing and so kind. She was fun to talk to and we had a few laughs. I met other sisters and they were all pretty cool, too. I could see myself with them. All in all nothing of note really happened, but it was so much fun. I hoped they would invite me back! Gooey Butter Cake: The girls were all so cute! Going through the house was fun! You could tell they had put a ton of work into setup and decorating. I really liked all the girls I had met. I felt at ease here, too. Again, nothing of note happened, but I hoped to be invited back. Apple Cake: It was....interesting. We were met with a lot of screaming, for which reading GreekChat had prepared me, they seemed like a lot of fun. Stepping in the house kind of smelled a little funny. We were only to talk with one sister that night and another PNM. The girl was really nice and we had some of the same interests, I was really digging it...Then we sat down for the slide show. A lot of the pictures showed some of the girls looking quite drunk. Another sister behind me piped up "Yeah, we love to have fun! Sometimes people call us the drunk sorority!" and giggled. I think she may have been drunk during the party actually, it would explain the smell. The president looked a little horrified and said no no and tried to shut her up, The sister I was with giggled with the first girl and agreed. Okay. Wow. That was unexpected. Right there that moved them down on my list. Rank: Cheese Cake Gooey Butter Cake Angel Food cake Apple Cake Outside as us PNMs chatted among ourselves one of the other girls told me she had rushed last year both in the fall and in the spring yet had not been invited back after the first night. She told me they told her she was welcome to try again so that must mean something and therefore if she kept returning she was guaranteed a bid sometime. I wasn't sure what to say to that. . . Another girl said she was a legacy to ZTA so she was guaranteed a bid from all the sororities here. We don't even have a chapter of ZTA. Apple Cake is actually quite popular with this year's PNMs, Angel Food Cake is not. ETA: I will NOT reveal who Apple Cake or Angel Food Cake are. |

But this just reminded me of that. |

A walk-through with parents? I've never heard of something like this.
Is this part of recruitment or just a pre-recruitment/orientation kind of thing? |
...
|
I really wanted some damn cake.
|
I really like the idea of a walk through with the parents. My parents had hardly a clue of Greek life so it would have been nice to show them what I would be looking at.

It's pre-recruitment. The day before open house parents, siblings, and students are welcome to be taken on tours of the houses, no need to be registered for recruitment. You just look at the house and the girls tell you a bit about dues, what they like about being in a sorority, and it's all very casual. |
I make a killer gooey butter cake. I loves me some Paula Deen :D

I'm sorry for not being around for so long. I've been having some issues with my roommate that involved a few things to mysteriously disappear. I haven't really had time or access to get on here. It's really tough to keep up with schoolwork without a laptop of my own, but I'm managing with a lot of library hours. I'm transferring schools. I need to get away, but wanted to wait until the end of the semester so I don't mess up my GPA.
Long story short: Had a slight accident which caused me to miss a party and at my school if you miss a party you are released. I've made a few good friends and I'll miss them quite a bit when I leave. ETA: I'll go ahead and post the rest. The next day was the Skit round. We could attend a maximum of three parties. I was invited back to Apple cake and Cheesecake. I was a little disappointed about this, I was really hoping for Gooey Butter and Cheesecake. Getting dressed was tough, I wanted to dress nice but on the other hand it was extremely hot outside and the houses were on opposite sides of campus. In the end I went with dressing nice and brought a pack of facial tissue to dab at sweat and a little bit of powder in case my makeup melted or something - luckily it stayed put and it wasn't a disaster. Apple Cake They greet us at the door with confetti. (That had to be a nightmare to clean after!) This time it was just one on one rather than one sister, two PNMs. We sat down and chatted before the skit. The girl asked me how I liked the other houses yesterday. Going against GC advice I mentioned I liked all the houses, although I had felt a little uncomfortable at one. The girl immediately knew which one and told me her friend was in that house and liked to scare PNMs. Oh, how nice? (You'd think she'd be a little more careful, all it takes is the wrong person.) This girl wasn't the "drunk" type I met the night before. She was nice, classy, and considerate. I really liked her and she seemed like a lot of fun. When it was time for the skit everyone sort of gathered around to watch with our snacks. The skit was cute, simple. It was centered around their philanthropy and the things they did for it. It was short and sweet, though one girl kept forgetting her lines, I'm sure she was nervous. They did another skit, only this one was about sisterhood and what being an Apple Cake meant to them. It was really sweet. All in all it wasn't bad, but I wasn't sure I really wanted to join this one. Cheesecake I was thrilled to be returning to this one! Standing outside the house in line I could feel butterflies but at the same time I was glad to be back. They greeted us on the entrance steps of their house, giving each of us a bottle of water. It was much appreciated. Inside they asked us if we wanted any other refreshments. Like the previous house we sat around chatting for awhile before the skits started. This house rotates girls and I was happy there weren't any awkward silences. Really nice girls. Their skit was really funny, although there were a few tearful moments as they did skits about their philanthropy, their sisterhood, and the sorority's history. I really hoped to be a part of this one. Their skit was long, but it wasn't boring. It ended right where there really wasn't time for two but we did sit around chatting. A girl across the room dropped her water but it was fine. As we left a sister from the night before came up to say hi, which I thought was nice of her, I felt so welcome. The next day....Pref Parties! They were to be in the evening so it was cooler. At the risk of sounding self-centered, I must say I loved my dress. GC's advice on the cover-up for the scars on my leg worked like a charm. The next morning I got up, received my invite: Just Cheesecake tonight. It doesn't matter I was only invited back to one, I was happy! The place I felt at home wanted me back! We could attend a maximum of two parties. I went out for the day and met with a couple of new friends at the park. We headed back with about 3 hours to spare so we'd have time to eat something, get dressed, and head over early to the center. Except on the way back I was rear ended at a red light. I wasn't seriously injured, but it was enough to take me to the hospital and get a few stitches. Unfortunately I was there for so long I had to miss the party. I called the recruitment center to let them know I was dropping out and that was that. I was a little upset, but it wasn't the end of the world. Day after one of the girls from Cheesecake came up to ask me what had happened and wanted to know if something was wrong because I seemed happy with them. I was encouraged to participate in COB events, which I was going to do, although I've been having current roommate issues and I need to get away so I'm withdrawing when the semester ends. I'm at home at the moment and it's nice to be back, even though I'm headed back to school on Sunday. |

Good luck to you! |
exactly. First thing, find out about being moved. You shouldn't have to deal with that for even a day and the school should be pretty helpful on that. Second, do the COB. You loved them, they obviously liked you. And it wasn't perfectly clear if your chapters are housed, but there's always a chance (rules vary) that the chapter would allow you to move in right away. In general I'm not a fan of that (in my experience the girls who moved in as pledges didn't get as good of grades), but if you have to move anyway, maybe this is an option for you.
Best of luck! |
