LSU Recruitment

Recruitment starts today at LSU. Any updates would be appreciated!! Good luck girls!!!!

PinkPalmTree 08-16-2009 05:16 PM

One of my best friends is going through recruitment there! My phone is dead right now and I can't locate my charger, but once I find it, I'm going to call her and I'll let you know!

tootiepie 08-17-2009 06:37 PM

Here I go, my first post!!!!

DD just finished the first round of parties at LSU. She had a great time but is very nervous for invites tomorrow. She knows that some of he groups that she likes are the most popular so the cuts will be heavy. Of course I reminded here that she can only pledge one group so stay positive and have fun. As I said she does have a few groups that stand out but she said that there were no groups that she would just hate being in, so she will stay open minded.

It rained today and they had to huddle up together under the tents!!

Also you might be interested to know that about 20 girls from different groups have influenza. It has not been diagnosed as swine flu but they were all sent home.

I think that there are about 869 girls participating.

Well wish us luck!!!

good luck and good health to your daughter and the rest of the lsu pnms.

Katmandu 08-17-2009 10:27 PM

Tootiepie, good luck to your daughter! (and to all the women going through recruitment at LSU). Your comments about her only being able to join one group are right on the money. All it takes is one and I wish more moms and daughters understood that. Hope she has a terrific time and continues to enjoy all the groups. Good luck to you as well. Stay sane!

lsumomx2 08-18-2009 04:32 PM

My daughter is also going through recruitment at LSU. The ice water round is now in the books and this afternoon the 2 day Philanthropy round begins.

She was invited back by 6 of the 10 sororities, so she's feeling pretty upbeat. Of course, she's wondering what she didn't say or do to not get an invitation from the other four. I guess that's human nature.

Luckily, she didn't go in with her heart set on any particular sorority. Going into this round, she now has a few that have become front runners, but that could quickly change as she learns more about each group.

What a fun, but stressful week for all concerned.

Good luck to everyone!!!

lsu_rosewhite 08-18-2009 04:39 PM

Hang in there, lsumomx2.

The sororities at LSU are all great chapters! Sounds like your daughter has an excellent attitude. I wish her continued success in future rounds!

Hope the weather improved today for the girls.

tootiepie 08-18-2009 04:41 PM

My daughter was so excited this morning with her invitations. She was invited back to 8 and she just couldn't believe it. One of the groups that released her was a top group that always has to make heavy cuts. The other group was one that she just did not have a good conection with so she was not sad at all to see them gone. Of course I had to be the realist and tell her to expect heavier cuts this round. I didn't expect it to be bad this round because she had 2-3 recs for each group, fantastic grades, and a great resume. The next round will probably be a lot harder on her.

Of her group of friends they are all doing well. One had 9, another had 7, and one claims to have all 10. I think she might be embellishing the truth because she also said she didn't have that many recs!!!! Of course she could have really dazzled them.

The t-shirt that they got is so cute. It has 10 little girls on the back in thier old fashioned dresses with the letters of each sorority on one of the girls.

Also I think that each chapter shows a video of thier philantropy as opposed to the cheesey crafts as were discussed in another thread.

p.s. It is good thing I never took a job in an office, my typos are terrible so please forgive me.

lsumomx2 08-18-2009 04:49 PM

tootiepie, good luck to your daughter and her friends. We'll be stressing together this week.:D

Welcome to GC, tootiepie. Do you know -- or does anyone in the LSU loop know -- if Panhellenic / Greek Life will be making arrangements so that any PNMs "sent home" with H1N1 will be allowed to go through some form of recruitment later if they wish?

It just strikes me that it'd be nice to allow all the LSU NPC chapters to recruit the flu victims after they've recovered -- not just a COB thing, but even chapters that made quota and are at or over total.

srmom 08-18-2009 05:12 PM

Bummer about the girls that were sent home with the flu!! I wonder if any provisions will be made for them since there was such a large group, or if they are just out of luck?

Good luck to your girls!!

exlurker - pinch poke you owe me a coke! (we posted same thought at the same time :))

I'd be very surprised if any provisions will be made. There are just too many PNMs and every chapter is likely to be at total after recruitment. Also, it's not like there were 100 of them, it seems like a pretty small group.

srmom, welllllllllll, maybe. It depends on what Target has on special; I'm making a run over to it later this afternoon. May have to be a generic, not a brand name.

BlueCarnation 08-18-2009 05:31 PM

How awful! H1N1 is our campus's biggest fear right now, recruitment notwithstanding. I hope everyone else manages to stay healthy. Good luck!

33girl 08-18-2009 06:09 PM

I read that as 20 sorority members, not rushees.

sassygal 08-18-2009 06:23 PM

I'll make a public service announcement. H1N1 is killed by Hibiclens. Go to your drug store and pick up a bottle. If you wash your hands once a day it will keep you protected from transmitting the disease from your hands to your month, eyes, nose ect....It will not protect you if someone sneezes or coughs in your face, but it will protect you shaking all those hands with bugs on them during recruitment.

tootiepie 08-18-2009 06:24 PM

Yes, it is sorority members. I haven't heard of any PMN's yet but I did wonder about this as my daughter is friends with one of the girls and she spent a little bit of time with her before they went on silence!!! So far she feels good.

Lsumomx2 this is an extrememly stressful time. I am a kindergarten teacher(the reason my spelling is so bad, I have been with 5 year olds to long!) and my class could have got away with murder today until I got a text from her. This is probably going to be her first taste of rejection. She went to a very small school and she and her friends were top dogs. I spent the whole summer telling my poor baby that she was not going to be top dog at LSU so now she probably has some kind of complex:(

The whole rejection thing is part of life.

You weren't hurting her by telling her that she's "not going to be top dog at LSU." Heck, alot of the PNMs at LSU were probably "top dog" at their respective high schools.

You were simply preparing her and telling her the truth!

Better to be prepared than shocked.

tootiepie 08-18-2009 06:47 PM

I tried hard to impart all the wisdom I have gained from the ladies here at GC:D

Recruitment t-shirt

Here is a pic of the t-shirts someone mentioned above. They are sooooo cutehttp://appl003.lsu.edu/slas/greekaff...%20T-shirt.jpg!!

littleowl33 08-18-2009 08:48 PM

Too cute! And I love that Kappa and Pi Phi are hugging :D

lsumomx2 08-19-2009 10:05 AM

Yep, I keep telling my daughter to be prepared for some rejection tonight when the next round of cuts is made.

Luckily, she didn't go into this with her heart set on any particular sorority. Of course, after going through 2 rounds, she now has a few favorites and a few that she doesn't feel are for her. I can tell from her voice that she's starting to get tired...still excited, but tired.

Oh well....the waiting continues.

baci 08-19-2009 12:04 PM

Be strong...have faith!

tootiepie 08-19-2009 05:10 PM

I just got off the phone with my daughter and you are right they sound exhausted. I was worried that she was upset but she assured me she is just tired.
She went into rush exactly the same as your daughter lsumomx2. She didn't know very much about any of the sororities but now she has 3 that she loves. As long as she gets at least 1, I think she will be happy. Of course I think these are probably the same groups that most of the other girls like too, so the cuts might be heavy. I guess I will find out tonight, she gets her invitations at 8.

FSUZeta 08-19-2009 07:39 PM

fingers crossed for your girls, moms!

PinkPalmTree 08-19-2009 08:12 PM

I've been talking to my friend, and she loves every chapter. She says she's going to have such a hard time narrowing it down to just one. That's great though, it proves what a strong school LSU is :)

tootiepie 08-19-2009 09:24 PM

Well she got 4 invitations back. She is kinda bummed that her very, very favorite released her. She still has 3 chapters that she really likes and one that is kinda not. I thing she will have a pretty good chance of getting invited back to at least one of her favorites.

She is going to forget about the one that realeased her and have a great time tomorrow. The chapters she has left are all great but right now I don't think she is seeing that.

She isn't sharing much info about anything else. She has always been like that, so I don't have much to shre with you.

lsumomx2 08-20-2009 10:41 AM

My daughter got 3 invites back. Like tootiepie's daughter, mine didn't get an invite back from her favorite, and she was pretty upset. We have no Greek affiliation and she's really only had one letter of rec for each sorority, so she's probably fighting an uphill battle.

She still really likes one of the sororities that remains, is on the fence about no. 2, and doesn't feel she'd be a good fit for no. 3.

She's going to attend the skit round today and see if her opinion changes about 2 and/or 3. I'm afraid if no. 1 doesn't invite her back, she may consider dropping tomorrow. We'll see.

SallyMae 08-21-2009 06:56 AM

Hang in there. Moms!!!

AGDAlum 08-21-2009 08:39 AM

I wonder if these two daughters will be bid by the same house?!

I wish them the best!

lsumomx2 08-21-2009 10:03 AM

Thanks for the well wishes. :)

tootiepie 08-21-2009 08:13 PM

Thanks for all your support. It has been a roller coaster of a week. She was invieted back to two pref parties. One sorority that she loves and it has been in her top all week and one that has been in the bottom all week. She planned on cutting it but did not have the opportunity. Now this sorority that she does not like is mine!!!! I did not expect her to bid it because I know it was not a fit for her. She will not list this sorority on her list so that means that she is going to suicide. I have told her the cons of this but in the end she says she does not to be obligated to this sorority for a year. She mentioned spring recruitment but the only ones doing spring are usually the ones that she was not crazy about. This is not a tier thing, she just did not like the girls and felt very uncomfortable with the sorority. In the end this is her decision and she seems to accept it. We are still holding out hope and saying many prayers that she will get her first and only choice. She will get a call tonight between 12 and 1 if she does not get a bid. So it will be a very long night for me. What ever happens I will be going to Baton Rouge tomorrow to celebrate or give hugs.

Just interested 08-21-2009 08:56 PM

What a great mom you are tootiepie. Good Luck to your daughter.

tootiepie 08-21-2009 09:05 PM

Thanks Just Interested. I love her so much and hate to see her hurting, but this is part of life and it won't be the last. I know that she will move on and find lots of things to enjoy if this doesn't work out.

PinkPalmTree 08-21-2009 09:30 PM

my best friend has zeta and theta for prefs :D

SallyMae 08-21-2009 10:08 PM

Does anyone know how many girls are going thru recruitment this week and what quota might be? I know LSU has 11 sororities on campus.

lsu_rosewhite 08-21-2009 10:32 PM

SallyMae,
There are 10 sororites participating in recruitment this week.

And good luck to all of the PNMs tomorrow!

tootiepie 08-22-2009 08:49 AM

After a long and sleepless night my daughter informs me that I was wrong about the time they would call her. It is sometime this morning. I am leaving for B.R. soon, hopefully for bid day but maybe for lots of icecream and crying.

TXalum1 08-22-2009 09:34 AM

Best of luck for a good day, tootiepie. Whatever happens, just remember she has a wonderful mom who did not force her sorority on her. I had a friend whose mom did force her sorority on her and her sister. My friend was never happy with it.

lsumomx2 08-22-2009 10:04 AM

Well, the pref card is signed and today is bid day. She seriously considered dropping yesterday, but decided to go to the Pref parties. Boy, is she glad she did.

She really, really has come to love the sorority she has chosen as no. 1, even though it may not be considered one of the more "popular" sororities on campus. She loves that the girls are all so real and laid back. Said she feels like she can completely be herself with them. :) As I told her, things happen for a reason and if this is where she's meant to be, then it'll happen.

Now we're just sitting back and keeping our fingers crossed that she gets her no. 1 pick.

Counting the hours until 4pm today.

Tootiepie, I believe the girls get a call between 9 and 11 am, if they don't receive a bid. I hope your daughter gets what she's hoping for!!!!
