Non-Greeks wearing Greek Shirts
I went home over the weekend and went out partying with some friends of mine at a bar. Well i saw a guy there wearing a EX shirt and i was like In Hoc brother and he looked at me funny and was like im not your brother. Then i say...well your a sigma chi right and he's like what the f@#% is a sigma chi. Im like that shirt your wearing with that EX....thats my fraternity. Why are you wearing my letters if you aren't in my Fraternity. Well he said he found it at a goodwill and thought i'd look cool if he wore it out. Well we exchanged words and almost got into it but luckily he walked away and my friends calmed me down. unfortunatly i saw him later after leaving the bar getting arrested(im assuming a DUI).
Have you guys ever had similar experiences with people wearing your letters and not in your GLO? If so what do you say/do? Do you offer to buy the letters off of them? It totally took me off-guard and i was having a little too much fun earlier so i wasn't in the right mindset. I'd like to know how you all handled your situation(s). |
Do I have a story for you!
Every year our sorority gathers up old clothes and donates them to a shelter. Sometimes we'll throw in some old function t-shirts and stuff (no biggie). Well one Christmas one of my sorority sisters was driving with her family in the downtown area (which is where the homeless are usually found). At anyrate, she looked over and started laughing because some bum was wearing a XO sweatshirt http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif. It sounds funny but she was greatful that an old sweatshirt was helping some poor person stay warm! So in that situation I wouldn't even bother talking to the person! But I can definately understand your frustration and anger about some stranger wearing your letters and being so disrespectful! What's worse is that he was arrested in them http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif! That's just bad publicity! But really, what can you do? I think it's probably worse for guys...but I could be wrong. There could easily be some disrespectful young women running around wearing a sorority shirt, or worse yet a badge! ------------------ What do you get when you cross and Alpha Omicron Pi and a Sigma Phi Epsilon? A beautiful Chi Omega!!! |
Hahahaha, that's a good story Hootie http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif
Something like that happened up here where a couple tri delt event shirts were found at a nearby homeless shelter. Just last year there was this dollar store that was selling cheap hats of all the fraternities (even some that didn't have any chapters in the city) which pissed off a lot of the greeks here. I remeber sigma pi telling me some 12 yr. old kid thought wearing their letters looked cool. |
I see a lot of that. I've recently seen several Guatemalan refugees wearing brand new AKA shirts--so new the creases from being folded were still in them!--and all I can get out of them is that they got them from some tienda in Atlanta.
Recently a whole bunch of them walked into class all bright in their pink and green and three other teachers (all Greek alums) and I feared that the fourth teacher--a fabulous, ladylike, elderly AKA who still wears para--might possibly have a coronary if she saw them so we found lots of reasons to get her down the hall when the ESOL class was on break. Luckily, she rarely teaches on ESOL night.... |
Back in summer 1993, I was at home in Queens and walking down Northern Blvd, here comes a bum with an SDT t-shirt!! I ALMOST PEED MY PANTS! Just goes to show you, discard of your letters with care!
|
I also have a "bum in a sweatshirt" story, only it was AOPi, and there aren't even any AOPi chapters by my mom & dad's (where I was). I've also seen jackets for sale at thrift shops.
I just wish I could say please, if you hated your Greek experience so much that you want to get rid of your letters/pin/whatever, get in touch with the chapter nearest you and have a heart and DONATE it!!! I'm sure they'd be ecstatic to have the extras, since sweatshirts (especially the nice ones) are not as cheap as they used to be!! |
This is a weird one. According to our national rule, only thing that can't be worn by an "outsider" is the membership pin and coat of arm. As far as wearing a letter, doesn't say anything about it. Locally, it's very different. Some wouldn't care less, other will be greatly upset. Then you also have the question of functions shirt. I guess it depend on local tradition.
|
today i was sitting in class and all of a sudden, this girl walks in to the classroom with a sweatshirt that had a fraternity's letters on it. It was really weird since i always thought you couldnt do that. Then, i thought the guy behind was her boyfriend and a member of that fraternity, but it was just a random guy that wasnt even with her.

at my school a fraternity's little sisters were allowed and expected to wear the fraternity's letters.
we had plenty of bums in the neighborhood where I went to school (downtown los angeles) and it was always strange to see some huge guy in a sorority event t-shirt. |
I really don't see what the big deal is about wearing Frat letters if you are a girl. To me, that just adds to the genre of a Frat if a cutie pie girl is wearing the Frat's greek letters. I am a Southern Belle for Kappa Alpha Order and we are actually inducted, and given big and little brothers. Our Big Brothers give us stitched shirts with KA Southern Belle emblazoned on it and I always wear it and my other KA shirts with pride! These guys take pride in their Belles and I am proud to be one.
|
I also wanted to add that my sister was a Delta Gamma and when she passed away I was given all of her clothes, including MANY MANY DG shirts. I wear them proudly and often. Hope this doesn't offend and Chi-O's but since she can't wear them, I live to "advertise" for her. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif Just don't be so uptight about others wearing your letters, as long as they are proudly and honorably displayed.

I've noticed several high school girls in my classes (I'm a senior) sporting sorority shirts. It always gives me the chuckles because it looks...well...wierd! I'll never forget, last semester in history class there was one girl talking about how she was going to try to pledge KD the next fall, as she said this she was in XO letters! I think alot of the high school kids do it for status purposes or what not, ("Look at me, I'm still in high school and I'm wearing a sorority shirt!") but even if I did have access to greek apparel I don't think I'd have the guts to wear it in public yet. Say that I wore these letters, and ended up pledging a different sorority in the fall? That would be awkward...
|
I have to say that even as a new member, who was allowed to wear letters & whatnot, I didn't feel comfortable enought until initiation. I couldn't imagine wearing a sorority shirt and having no affiliation at all with the group, like the high school girls did.

I've never actually seen anyone with a greek shirt on who wasn't greek...at least not to my knowledge. I can definitely see how it would be weird, but it would make me feel good if a greek shirt were being put to good use on the back of a homeless person!
Erin http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif ------------------ Rise and shine and become a Kappa Gamma! |
I don't mind the fact that girls wear fraternity shirts...i actually like it when they do, but when i see a guy who isn't even in your fraternity and probably never even been to community college wearing your letters....i dont even wanna go there.
|
there was this one girl at my highschool who wore Delta Zeta letters. I think she is legacy there, but I could be wrong. Anyway it was just weird, and it certainly didn't improve her status. Then there were two guys I knew talking about a fraternity party, because another girl we knew was wearing a party shirt that was her sisters or something, and they were talking about how they were there. Everyone said that they would have laughed out of that party in five minutes. hehehe.

To Billy Optimist:
Are you saying that it is wrong that I wear my sister's DG shirts? |
Sorry Mr. Optimist...
I read your statement wrong! No hard feelings? |
Hey TxTechChiO, i go to the university of houston. It is always nice to find someone close to home! So you are a chi o there? I also read that you are part of the Kappa Alpha Order? I am sorry for my ignorance, but what is that? i dont think i have ever heard of it.
Well about my post with that girl wearing a fraternity sweatshirt, i was just commenting on it- and i thought that wasnt allowed. I guess i was wrong, but thank you all for clearing that up! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif |
A couple of years ago, my boyfriend's car was broken into. He had just gotten back from doing my laundry. The thieves left the radio and CD player, but took my basket of clothes which contained MANY of my Delta Zeta shirts, as well as a Kappa Sigma shirt that had belonged to a very good friend that had recently passed away. If I EVER get my hands on the s.o.b.'s that stole my things, they will definitely think twice before laying a finger on someone else's property! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif To think that some lowlife is out there wearing my letters makes me want to scream!!
|
For my chapter it was looked down(major disrespect) upon for a lady to wear our letters unless things were really serious. I'm talking marriage. Usually it was when one of the brothers had been dating his girl for a very long time, they were going to be engaged, and the chapter adopted her also. Other than that I havent seen anyone else outside of Beta wear my letters. Now, Homecoming and event shirts are a totally different story.

And Bucutie02, hopefully my question will in someway answer your's. She isn't a memeber of the order, which is a male organization, but an honourary female member. And if you want to know about Kappa Alpha order, there is a thread somewhere here in Greek Life all about it. Leslie |

I am not really familiar w/what goes into being a Sigma Chi Sweetheart but, yea, to answer your question, Southern Belles are pretty much Kappa Alpha sweethearts. The title Southern Belle just better represents their history and ideals. We have to be voted in and I am not sure how other Fraternities do it. gphi2k, pretty much summed it up. KA is known as an Order of Southern Gentlemen.
Miami1839: I am not sure what Fraternity you are in but I just wanted to clear things up. KA's don't just give their letters away. It's a big deal to be a Belle and, yea, I guess it basically means the KA's have adopted us. But I just didn't want anyone to think that KA's let just anyone wear their letters. |
TO BUCUTIE02:
My boyfriend is from Houston and I love it there! Are you originally from there? What part? I used to attend Texas Tech but now I go to SFA. You've probably heard of SFA since you are so close! |
TexasTechChiO- I have lived in Houston my entire life! Well most of it, we moved here when i was about 5 years old. I live in northwest houston- like cy-fair/copperfield area. What part of Houston is your boyfriend from? Yes i have heard of SFA, i know some people that go there too! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

TXTechXO,
I am a Beta Theta Pi Alum. I'm only saying that what the deal was with my chapter. I wasnt really talking about any other Fraternity because that wouldnt be right. I'm sure that the KAs there have their reasons for letting you wear their letters. I was only talking about my chapter. Well i work at a hardware store and one morning about 7 am i was walking in to work and out came a guy who looked like he hadn't taken a shower or combed his mullet in 3 weeks. well, he was wearing a hayride shirt which doesn't have our letters on it but says sigma chi w/ a big white cross, i was pissed but just laughed it because you know how those peolpe fight.....them with there cars on blocks and appliances in the front yard.......hahahahahah
I've have more stories from friends but its all the same |
A couple of my sisters were walking around on campus and saw a girl (who they didn't recognize) wearing Delta Zeta letters. Naturally they assumed that maybe she was a transfer or a student at another university and approached her to intoroduce themselves. They asked if she was a DZ and she looked confused and said no, this is my boyfriend's sweatshirt. My sisters were like, um...ok...and walked away smirking about whether this girl know that this was a sorority sweatshirt....
Also, last year I was at an SAE party and one of my friends was wearing a DZ bid day shirt from the year before. I still don't know how he got a hold of that http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif ------------------ DZ sisters never end! |
BUCUTIE02: My boyfriend lives in River Oaks; in the same house his whole life. Do you kinda know where that is? How do you like U of H? I sooo want to live in Houston, whenever I get out of school http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif
I am not really familiar with the area you are from. Houston is just too big! But I love it. |
Wearing letters does seem to vary from place to place. I know that we are only supposed to let women we are very involved with wear our letters . . .
I can't imagine where a Sorority's letters at all, involved or not, or what guy would want to. KA Southern Belle sounda a lot like a little Sister/starduster organization . . . we are not allowed by Constituion to have little sisters. Its considered degrading to women . . . you have your own groups to join, why would you want to be an auxillary to ours? This being said, if we weren't consititionally bound I am sure many a Chapter would LOVE to have a little sister organization http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif. |
Geez -- I am really somewhat surprised at some of these responses. I do not want anyone wearing AXO letters who is not a sister. Event tees are different since they aren't "letters" -- by letters I mean the really nice double stitched kind you buy (not an event tee that says AXO and TKE).
Granted, the homeless thing is another issue -- especially since I know from working with the Salvation Army that people do end up with letters. They really need clothes to wear and I'm not going to make anything of it if I were to ever see it. As far as the high school thing goes...nuh uh! No way -- I don't care if every woman in your family since 1885 was an Alpha Chi....until you get that bid and you are accepted as a new member, then keep your hands off! Our nationals also reserve the crest and badge to initiated members only....HOWEVER...I know most of our new member classes at the chapter I advise decide for themselves not to wear letters until they are initiated. I think it means so much more to them. |

Anyway, yes i know where River Oaks is at, and i do agree with you that Houston is way too big. I guess when you have lived here forever you kind of get familiar with most of the area! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I live with my parents as well right now. U of H is going pretty good. I dont really enjoy the drive down there everday, but i do think the people there are a lot more friendlier and down to earth! How is SFA? [This message has been edited by bucutie02 (edited March 09, 2001).] |
Our Southern Belles arent really a little sister organization. Alot of chapters do assign the Belles to a little/big brother or whatever. The belles are just like sweethearts, so its not so much like little sisters. We take 1 woman from each sorority every year and make her a Belle, so you wind up with 10 or 13 Belles, then we have a Rose. She is the actual "sweetheart" of the chapter I guess if you had to put a title on it.
Its good to have Belles. We take alot of pride in these girls and their respective chapters. The Belles know that if they ever need anything we will come runnin. bucutie- you are from houston and you have never heard of Kappa Alpha? I guess Houston's chapter is shut down, KA is huge in Texas. *******Got off the subject there but I have a letter wearing story too. I was downtown one morning were my university is and a older gentleman passed me on the street. He had on a jacket that looked like it was from the 70's and it had KA on the front. Dumbfounded for a second I tourned around and went to greet this brother. When I stopped him I said "How are you doin? Are you a KA?" He looked at me funny and I pointed to his jacket. He looked down and said "Oh, Kentucky Association? Yes I am a member." I laughed and told him I was a member too and we parted ways. This man was homeless and I didnt realize this until further trips downtown. I go downtown in the mornins to eat at the Elks lodge. Wooohoo. Good food and alot of my Masonic brothers eat there. Anyway, no this man wasnt a KA but actually, It made me feel good that the letters I earned are keeping him warm at night. Sounds like a good cause to me. ****Random for the sake of Randomness.......I just realized that I made senior member. I'm out for world domination now. Hey Mr. Hammell, how about sendin me some of that moderator action???? I could moderate a Beer directory or somethin. [This message has been edited by KABillyMac (edited March 09, 2001).] |
I realized I've probably added to non Chi Omega's wearing Chi Omega letters (oops). My pledge semester, which was three years ago, Panhellenic had extra Recruitment shirts with the Theme and the specifically each sorority's letters on the front right hand corner.
They were begging to give them away, and since I didn't own a t-shirt with Chi Omega letters on it yet (other than my bid-day shirt) I snagged up three for myself and two pledge sisters. Well, they'd already gotten their own so I kept the other two. I decided to give one to my mother because she likes to wear t-shirts every now and then...and one to my sister in middle school for her to have should she want to every wear as pajamas. LOL Maybe I did the wrong thing, but they're family and I know they won't be dishonorablly displaying my letters. And because the shirt had the other three sorority's letters on it too...I don't think it should be a big deal. So, I guess that's my point. I think it should be okay for family to wear lettered shirts only if they do it respectfully. ------------------ What do you get when you cross and Alpha Omicron Pi and a Sigma Phi Epsilon? A beautiful Chi Omega!!! |

Sorry for the misunderstanding, what a great way to enhance relations with sororities on campus! I would be glad to hear some details, if they are not secret on how this system works, how you pick, how you make it official etc. For example do you choose junior members of their organizations? Please email me privately if you don't want to post.

No problem. We have our last formal of the year and it is called Old South. Its a huge event, we have stuff going on all week and then we have formal for 2 days usually in a diffrent town. KA's are known as southern gentlemen so you can imagine how the ladies get treated. Right before Old South, during meeting, we elect a new Rose. Everyone submits a ballot of who they think should be Rose. (Note: The rose is usually a previous southern belle) Once we have the Rose picked, we start picking Southern Belles. Each member submits a list of the 1 girl in each sorority they think would be a good Belle. Whoever recievest the most nominations from that sorority gets the Belle for that year. Before we leave for Old South, we have a dinner called Wine and Cheese. This is for all the brothers and their dates to Old South. The ladies all get flowers and recieve their formal invitation to Old South. Once we have that done, we give out the awards for the year, (best athelete, jackass of the year , that kinda stuff Note:I am ahead in points for jackass of the year) and then we announce the Rose. She gets flowers and our letters and a big plaque. We then announce all the Belles, and they get the same. Then we all get on one knee and sing to the ladies. Good stuff.

KABillyMac,
yep im from houston and had never heard of KA. I might have heard about the fraternity a long time ago or something but didnt pay any attention to it. Plus, even if i had heard of it before i never knew about southern belles. To be perfectly honest with you, i dont know if my school has KA or not. I dont really pay any attention to fraternities at the moment. I see guys wearing tshirts all the time, but they are all mainly Sigma Chi and Sigma Nu. I used to go to baylor and i dont think they had a chapter there- or atleast i never knew or heard of one. |
