UGA Recruitment
Has anyone heard how things are going in Athens? I am not helping this year and feel so out of the loop. :(
|
My boss' daughter is going through recruitment there now, but I haven't heard anything yet. Should be interesting to see if things turn out for her the way her family expect them to.
|
I had heard that 1220 were registered, but heard from a co-worker today whose daughter is going through that the number is over 1300. My daughter who is an active said it rained on and off today, and they were glad to have the longest part of first round behind them.

Is there a store where I could purchase a gift for pledge in Athens

Tough year at UGA as usual. Huge cuts Fri night. My friend's daughter went from 7 parties Fri to one pref yesterday. No bid :( She's pretty upset but she's definitely not alone.
|
I thought Pref parties were today at UGA? Did she decide not to attend her Pref. party?

Oh - then it must have been no pref invite - her mom only sent a text saying no bid. My misunderstanding! Thanks for clarifying dukedg!

I'm hearing about deep cuts, too. And more stories of girls being cut by their legacy chapters (no surprise) but then being dropped but other chapters.
I know we've beaten this into the ground...but should greek affiliations be left off the panhel form? Should it be up to the individual rushee to let the legacy chapter know on their own (a sort of legacy introduction form). |
I'm in favor of leaving the legacy affiliations off the forms, but I also think that people are overstating the role they play in recruitment at the other chapters.
It's a really hard recruitment at UGA because pretty much all the girls going through are so well-qualified, especially compared to previous generations. It's difficult to imagine that your 3.8 high school GPA and your two page resume and recs to all the houses just put you in the middle of the PNM pool. I know it's popular to assume you got cut because you were a legacy elsewhere, but the chapters themselves have experience to draw on in terms of how many legacies get released by certain chapters. (They also can see that some chapters have more legacies than quota is likely to be.) I don't think that chapters are releasing girls in the later rounds simply because they are legacies elsewhere. If they really like the PNM, they are going to keep rushing her. I'd be willing to bet that a good percentage of every pledge class at UGA is made up of legacies to other chapters and the chapters know this. |

Does anyone know what the quota at UGA is this year?
|
A DG I spoke with said quota is 46 this year.

ETA: the big recruitment thread says quota last year was 58. |

I heard 46 for underclassman, 8 for upperclassmen.

I forgot all about upperclassman quota.

Thank you !! |
I doubt it. UGA isn't as forthcoming with the new member lists as Alabama and Auburn.
You'll need to find out which group, have the address of your new member, and then call. |
At the parent meeting on Tuesday before recruitment started on Wednesday, we were told the quota would probably be around 52. I just didn't know if that held true. If MinDyG spoke to a DG and she said it was 46, then that's probably accurate.

I can't wait to find out if the 2 girls I knew pledged. My husband taught one of them!

Wow. 300 girls were released or dropped out. Is that typical for Georgia, or was this recruitment just really tough? Also how many girls registered for rush this year compared to last year?

I think the numbers are pretty typical. The quota seems a little down even when you add them together, but not a major way, and what we're hearing may be a little low based on the whole quota range deal that was explained in a different thread. Or maybe these are the final numbers, I don't know. |
daughter rushed this week at UGA. She attended three prefs; had a blast all week. she felt as though all the sorority women were completely incredible. When she filled out her choices she said it was so hard. She said every house had so much to offer. And yes, the currents had terribly hard choices due to the deep cuts. She isn't a legacy anywhere, but was treated as though she were at every house. She is so excited for tom. I am not sure she will sleep for the first night of classes. This site helped her feel confident going into the week. Thank you on her behalf.
Bulldog baskets stated it is best to email them with the name and sorority tom when you find out. They find out at 5:30 pm but leave for the houses at 7:00. Good luck to all the girls tom. |

It's the most wonderful time of the year...
HAPPY BID DAY! :)

Painful Process
Let me begin by saying that while I am no stranger to a competitive and often heartbreaking Greek system (I pledged at Ole Miss), I have not before been exposed so intimately to the sorority side of things. Now that I have, I am so happy it is about to be over. A few days ago, I dreaded Bid Day, for it looked as if my daughter would be spending it alone while her new dorm friends were heading to their new affiliations dressed in white. Now it looks as though things will work out perfectly...but we learned alot along the way.
My chief purpose here is to impress upon any future readers of this site the huge challenge that is faced by PNM's who are not Georgia residents. More specifically, PNM's who don't have high school connections working for them on the inside of at least one sorority. I know that it's like that at many schools, but the phenomenon will become exponentially exaggerated at UGA as it becomes more and more a school whose admission is exclusive to Georgia residents (thanks to Hope Scholarship). Getting into UGA from out of state is a monumental accomplishment. Pledging a sorority of your choosing from out of state is no less than a miracle. Congratulations to all of your girls who pledge today. Please impress upon them in your conversations with them over the next few weeks how important it is that they embrace those girls who didn't get an invitation today. These young ladies are likely victims of a numbers game and most of them, unfortunately, couldn't have changed the results of this process regardless of what they did differently. |
I hear you doting dad! Good luck to your daughter this afternoon. We were in the same situation a couple of years ago. Being out of state can be hard when it seems like everyone else has their high school connections - both on the inside and having close friends going through the recruitment process along with you.
On the other hand - maybe there is one advantage to being out of state. It is much easier to keep an open mind and not get caught up in the "sidewalk" talk. |
Good luck girls and parents! I love UGA stories and pics, please share if you can. :)
|
The pictures at Georgia are great - you are so lucky to have them. In looking at the preference pictures, I was surprised at the multitude of colors and styles - Georgia must have an enlightened view of preference dress. At Auburn, my daughter said there were only a handful of girls at preference that were not wearing a dark colored dress.
