OK, the last count that was 'heard' was 1152 and registration closed yesterday. I expect the final count to be around 1200, which is comparable to the last few years. On average, about 60-65% of that number advances to Bid Day.

I do have one question though. Why will only 60-65% advance to bid day? Does this mean almost 40% of the girls will not recieve a bid because they will be released?

It's a combination of PNMs being released as well as PNMs deciding not to move forward in the process. There are a lot more of those than you might think. Many PNMs take an 'all or nothing' attitude. So when they don't get all the invites back they wanted, they drop out. Or the PMNs registered for Recruitment w/o telling their parents, and the parents can't afford the fees, so they drop. There are too many reasons to list, really. Suffice it to say that being released is one of many factors!

The best thing you can do is move forward through the entire process with a good attitude. If, when you get down the Preference you still don't feel comfortable, don't sign a Bid Card. If you are not going to accept an invitation from one of your Preference groups, don't sign the card saying you will - you will just take a spot away from a PNM that would have accepted.

Okay! I panicked when I read that only 60% make it to bid day! wow, i would be crushed if i was released. I cannot wait to rush next week- I know this is cheesy, but I've been looking forward to this week almost my entire life!

I'm going into rush with an open mind. Of course, there is one house I really want and 3 or 4 houses that I love, but after meeting lots of the girls at Summerfest, I can really see great things in each house. If I get dropped by my top choices, then I probably wouldn't fit in there anyways. If someone keeps on inviting me back, I'll figure its for a reason :D

just give everyone a chance-really look at each chapter and analyze if you would truly fit in there-not just that you would want to fit in there.
accept all invitations that you can(go to the maximum # of parties you are able to each day) and even if you are not "in love" with the groups who invite you to pref., please attend the parties. look around the room at the other pnms-do they look like people you would maybe be friends with?

Great Advice! It is easy to get caught up and excited, but keep in mind that membership in a sorority is an amazing thing, you can be happy and have a great experience in a number of different places, and you will get out of your membership what you put into it no matter where you go. I had friends that joined a so called "top chapter" and they were miserable because they didn't follow what they wanted to do and only followed their friends.

My sister is correct. I have known several girls over the years who got into the "best" chapter on campus, the one every PNM dreamed of, the one all the frats wanted to mix with, etc. etc...

...and hated it. Everybody told them they were crazy to give up their spots, but they dropped before Initiation because it so obviously wasn't for them. Instead of going with their gut, they went for the chapter everyone was telling them was the best. It might be the best for some girls, but certainly not for everybody. Don't join a sorority to become like the sisters, join one where you can be yourself with them. Well, unless you want to become more philanthropic and have a higher GPA, or something noble like that :D.

(Anyway, those girls ended up pledging other chapters the next year and went on to lead happy Greek lives. But they would tell you that if they did it over again, they would have chosen differently.)

FYI, registration is now over 1270.

FYI - this is not really an option at FSU, or any of the SEC and ACC campuses.

When do all of the sisters return to campus to prepare for recruitment? I thought they would have by now and I still see one of my neighbor's daughters home.

Why is it not an option to pledge a different chapter your second year at FSU, but it's okay at other schools? Just curious.

most groups prefer freshmen, who will typically spend 4 years as active members. there is sometimes a stigma attached to someone who pledges one group one year , depledges and re-rushes the next year. sometimes people might be afraid that the same thing would happen in their chapter if they pledge that girl.

some sophomores and/or juniors have had successful recruitments, but those instances are few and far between.

There are a number of sophomores and juniors that do get bids at FSU - they are first-time PMNs and they have outstanding academics and community credentials.

Women that pledge, then drop out just before initiation, are rarely considered for membership at FSU and most major campuses. As my sister said, there is a preference for freshmen and a stigma attached to 'do-overs'.

Work week is in full swing. Move-in was this past weekend. Ice Waters start on Monday.

my friend who is a DG up there moved back up this previous weekend, and all the girls i know that are in any sorority deactivated their facebook accounts sunday night.

First of all, best wishes to everyone going through recruitment at FSU. I am so glad to be on the other side of the track this year. This time last year I was stressed and nervous beyond belief! My daughter is a PC08 and found the most amazing sisters ever! She loves her sorority and feels that being part of a sorority has been one of the best experiences of her life. While she was at home for summer break, all she talked about was how much she missed her sisters and FSU. She moved into her apartment two weeks ago and is so excited to meet the new young ladies that are about to go through recruitment. Work week has began and everyone is working extra hard on all of the preparations. Once again, good luck to everyone and please have an open mind and remember that all of the sororities have something special and amazing to offer.

So great to hear some stories on here about FSU. My youngest sister is a freshmen this year but has decided not to go thru Recruitment. Go 'Noles!

Rushing as a sophomore
 

Hey I'm Lindsay and right now I'm a freshman at Florida State and am planning to rush. Would it be better to rush in the spring or wait until the fall? Also, if i rush in the fall as a sophomore does that hurt my chances of getting a bid?

The biggest impediment to you not getting a bid is NOT rushing. You cannot change that you will be a sophomore in the fall, so that is a moot point. I know of sophomores who received bids to their top choices, so sophomores can have successful recruitments. I also know girls who rushed and accepted bids in the spring that are so glad that they didn't wait for fall rush.

Sign up for spring rush. All the chapters participate in the mandatory meeting, but all of them will not be able to participate in spring rush. Even if after the meeting you decide not to go to any of the spring rush parties, you will have met some members of each chapter and will have practiced rush conversations. It will be a good experience for you, but attending some of the rush parties would be even better. You are not obligated to accept a bid, but you may find your dream home, so why not give it a try? If things don't work out for you this spring, there is always fall rush 2014. Spring rush is like an extra chance, so take advantage!

One of the most important aspects of FSU rush is recommendations. You will need recommendations for every chapter. Since you don't know which chapters will be participating in the spring, start now to ask former teachers, neighbors, friends of your parents, parents of your friends, former classmates who may have joined sororities, ladies you know from church. While recommendations are not as crucial in the spring, they will put you on the sorority's radar. Some sororities have a national requirement that each girl they pledge must have a rec., so just do it for all of them. It is okay if ABC sorority receives a recommendation even though they may not be able to participate in spring rush. If they don't need it, they will shred it. Recs. are VERY important in the fall, so if you do not pledge this spring, you will need to get new recs. for the fall.

In addition, be friendly to girls you know that are sorority members. Just a simple smile and hello will do for a start-but don't be stalkerish. Have you joined any clubs or organizations? It would look good if you have, because most (if not all) sororities expect their members to get out and join campus orgs. Joining an org. might also give you another opportunity to meet some sorority members. You need to network on campus.

How are your grades looking? Hopefully you are doing great, because the sororities have pretty high expectations for their chapters, and good GPAs are critical. Each chapter has its own minimum GPA requirement, but realize that a 3.0 or above is expected by most. If your grades are a little shaky, realize that you may not receive any invitations during spring rush, but if you are near a 3.0, say a 2.8 or 2.9, you might meet the GPA recruitments of a few chapters. If your GPA is a 2.5 or below, it might be best to wait until fall rush and concentrate on bringing those grades up.
