Alabama Recruitment

Rush at Alabama starts next week. I understand almost 1500 young ladies have signed up. Does anyone have an actual count of PNM's?

Titchou 08-06-2009 07:04 PM

Zillini should be able to tell us. She's busy getting ready for their recruitment but should check in from time to time.....

Wow. Is that higher or lower than last year?

Bear 08-06-2009 09:59 PM

The total for last year was 1600

Zillini 08-08-2009 07:47 AM

Odd, it's down to 1476 now. I guess 3 girls changed their minds already.

Update

I understand everything is coming together for convocation tonight. All the sororities have worked really hard this week. Good Luck to all.

GPhiBLtColonel 08-10-2009 11:01 AM

I am excited that I am finally going to be able to see our Alabama chapter! On Wednesday, I am driving over to help, along with three other Peachtree City/Fayetteville alums!:):D

kk_bama 08-10-2009 01:08 PM

Numbers are down a bit this year due to the economy and the rising cost of tuition at Bama. Even still, each chapter should end up with a great pledge class!

Wipledale 08-10-2009 02:06 PM

Do you think Gamma Phi will make quota this year? My daughter is second year and in Gamma phi....Thanks.

kk_bama 08-10-2009 02:12 PM

I am a Gamma Phi advisor. I feel strongly that all chapters will make quota this year!

Buttonz 08-10-2009 05:30 PM

I'm hoping our SDT chapter there picks up some great girls. I hate to see them struggling so much!

Bear 08-10-2009 06:53 PM

Total PNM'S

Was 1476 the final number for PNM's participating at Rush this year?

I don't believe they participate in formal recruitment.
They did VERY well last year, pledging 13 or 14, I think. They still own their house...just leasing it temporarily to Alpha Phi.

They do participate in the first round but nothing after. With the numbers that they have, it's to hard at Bama to compete. However, I'm hoping that will change over the next few years!

I didn't hear that our numbers last year were that high, that's great news! Hopefully it will continue into this year!

Right now there are 1457 listed. There were a few who withdrew right before Convocation, then a few last minute sign ups we found out about this morning (first day of Open House round). Then Panhellenic has posted a list of no shows who have been taken off.

Bear 08-11-2009 07:20 AM

Thanks for the update Zillini.

Nhfulmer 08-11-2009 11:07 AM

I'm an Bama alum and member of Zeta Tau Alpha. I depend on some friends down there who are advisors to other GLO's and Greek Chat to keep me updated during rush. Good luck to everyone!! I'm actually glad to see the numbers drop some - those chapters are too big for their houses. When Delta Gamma comes on, it should help a little.

Keep us posted on what is going on.:)

Aphigal 08-11-2009 08:24 PM

I am excited for APhi's first formal recruitment!!!
Is DG still colonizing this Fall?? They were picked to come onto campus after Alpha Phi.

APhi4Ever 08-11-2009 08:26 PM

Delta Gamma is recolonizing in the Fall of 2010.

Can I tell you how much I love them for this? So many groups would be "recolonizing" or whatever, but I love the respect that SDT has for this chapter to let them be the size they are in a happy way.

Certainly, I hope they grow in membership and someday move back into their house (of course after Alpha Phi finds a permanent home). But to be allowed to be a happy, low pressure small chapter is a real gift.

Delta Gamma has not yet chosen a firm date for colonization.

Nhfulmer 08-11-2009 09:43 PM

Tonight is the first voting session after two days of open houses. I understand that more than a few girls do not have grades and it may be rough for them. Certainly the houses who have to release a LOT of girls will be looking hard at recs and grades. I hope all of these girls took their recs seriously - I 'm afraid they just don't realize how cruciall they are at Bama. We will see what tomorrow brings.

Oh yeah. Overall PNM GPA's were significantly lower this year. All the sororities were surprised by this and are wondering if there is some underlying cause or if it is just a fluke/coincidence that happened this year.

The total number starting Philanthropy Day was 1455. Several PNMs voluntarily withdrew during or after Open House round. Since that number was the same this morning as it was late last night, but before the invitation lists were due, I am assuming no PNM was completely cut after the first round. (Remember, that is my assumption and I have no official confirmation of this as yet.)

PinkPalmTree 08-12-2009 03:09 PM

Good luck to everyone at Alabama! My friend is an AOII there and absolutely LOVES her sisters, and has nothing but good things to say about every house on campus.

Amen, amen, and AMEN.

Party Attendance

What is the maximum number of sororities that PNM can attend on philanthropy day and also for the remaining parties?

33girl 08-12-2009 05:19 PM

Philanthropy - 11 max
Skit - 7 max
Pref - 3 max
Bid day - 1 max :)

KK Bama, the MVP I advised last year is a CLC with your ladies this year! I have heard great things about the chapter and am looking forward to wonderful recruitment updates! I'm sending my love and pink carnations your way.

phimusam 08-12-2009 06:36 PM

There is something on the College Confidential board about Alabama lowering entry GPAs this year in order to increase number of students. If so, it makes sense that the GPAs coming through rush would be lower.

Interesting. I was asked to write references for several UA PNMs. And, I was startled by how low some of the high school GPAs were this year. Makes sense now.

I hadn't really thought about it before, but yeah, I saw one GPA that really surprised me and she was going to Alabama.

I should have wondered how she was going to "The Capstone" with lower than a 3.0 out of high school and kind of average SATs.

Nhfulmer 08-13-2009 12:01 PM

Regarding the grades being low this year, I just spoke with someone at Bama about that. Actually the grades for incoming freshmen have been steadily going up over the past few years - even though the enrollment has been increasing. They have definitely not lowered the requirements in order to increase enrollment. They feel that the lower grades for rushees is simply an anomaly and has nothing to do with the increased enrollment.

Thank you ladies! I'll post some photos on Sunday.

Gung-Ho-Chi-O 08-13-2009 07:58 PM

Hi kkbama!

I'm thrilled you will be posting pics on Sunday...I feel so out of the loop since I moved from Alabama to Virginia 3 years ago.

I love seeing pics of any sort from rush. My Tuscaloosa days may have been forever ago...but it brings back memories like it was just yesterday :-)

Have a safe trip & enjoy yourself!!

Univ. of Alabama

This is what the latest U.S. News & World Report lists for the University of Alabama. Data is from 2007, which is used by all the universities for that issue. The next rankings are due in late August 2009. Rankings data will be from 2008.

National Universities:
Alabama Ranked 83rd
ACT Range 21-27
Acceptance Rate 64%
Freshmen in top 10% of high school class 38%

No mean or average GPA was listed for the University of Alabama.

U.S. News rankings can be controversial.

Wish we could have been there at the same time! It was so wonderful to be there helping, even though I had to park on the other side of the stadium! It was HOT HOT HOT!!!!! :o

The girls in the chapter are GREAT! The CLC Hayley is awesome - even though she is from my crosstown rival school :p

There were three of us Gamma Phi alums who drove all the way from Peachtree City to help (nearly 4 hr drive one way!) and we were very impressed with the chapter President - one of the other alums is a retired Army officer - I am retired AF - and we both commented on what great leadership skills Stephanie has! We thought the MVP really had her you-know-what together too. The house mom was very nice and the girls' moms who were there were just so sweet & helpful. I was happy to have made the trek to help!
