Wayne State Students

Hey everyone! :)

I'm new to this site... And well, to the college scene as a whole. I will be a freshman at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan come fall and I was wondering if anybody on this site attends the school. I'd love to talk to somebody about the campus' Greek life.

Thanks.

One of my brothers actually goes to Wayne but is a member of our chapter here at LTU.

Anyway, I don't know too much about about the Greeks there, although I did participate in part of their Rush last Spring. From what I saw, it seems like they have a pretty active and fun Greek Life.

This probably sounds stupid, but I didn't know you could join sororities and fraternities at institutions other than your own! You learn something new everyday?

I think he means that the guy joined at LTU but transferred and is going to Wayne now. You can't join a group at a different school than the one you're going to.

That's what I thought, :p. Thanks for clearing that up!

I was in the WSU greek system about 5 years ago, not sure how it is now but i'm assuming it cant be that different from when I was active. What exactly do you want to know about?

Hey! :) What sorority/fraternity were you a part of? Basically, I just wanted to get a brief low-down on some of the sororities. I don't drink or party excessively, for example, so I'm wondering if this comes down to being more of a myth than anything and if it will be easy to reject these things without being looked at differently. Also, I'm wondering if most of the sororities require the girls to live in a house and general prices. Anything would help... Thanks!

Pertaining to the bolded part, you will probably find this thread helpful. (Although it has a little bit of drama, sift through the BS and you will find some helpful information on drinking when it comes to Greek life and college in general).

ETA: The OP in the thread I referred you to is claiming that Greeks go through a lot of seminars about drinking and drugs, yet still partake in it. However, if you read a little while down, you will find that a lot of women in sororities state how some of their sisters do not drink, and it does not affect their experience with the sorority what-so-ever. Bottom line: There are drinkers in every situation. But, there are also non-drinkers. These women on this thread have stated that your sisters will accept you no matter your stance on drinking (unless you're a raging alcoholic ;)).

If there are houses, you will probably be expected to live-in at some point. The time period probably varies from chapter to chapter. Costs also vary as well.

Thank you for responding. That's more or less what I was curious about... Whether I'd fit in well. You're right though, there's bound to be people for and against it in the house so it shouldn't be hard to make friends.

I know that costs vary, but as a generality, a sorority house usually costs just under the price of dorms, right? That's what I seemed to have picked up on at least.

It depends on your school. Where you go to school, living in a sorority may be less expensive than the dorms. Here, I think it depends on the dorm. Example: Sorority living is cheaper than the more expensive dorms here, but it's pretty equal to some of the cheaper dorms (and sometimes costs more).

exactly, and you also have to consider other things when looking at cost- such as food. The sorority house you may be 21 meals of good food a week, versus only paying for 10 in a dining hall. My house also had parlor fees for the women who didn't live in the house- but it was waived for those who lived in.
So living in a dorm + parlor fees + food costs was more expensive than living in the house, even though it didn't look like it at first glance.

The sororities don't have houses due to local panhel bylaws, so that being said dues shouldn't be too much a semester maybe $300 a semester. They were talking about giving each sorority a floor in the dorms but not sure if that ever went through or not. When I was active there where 4 groups with a cap of 50 girls. Typically two ( AGD, DZ) of them would be at 55 girls while the other two ( KD, AEPhi) would be at maybe half quota. All rush events are dry anyway so partying won't be an issue. AEPhi's a jewish sorority but none of the girls in it are jewish, so keep that in mind as well.

I'm not a student at Wayne State but I've worked with our sorority chapter there for over 15 years and I can see Wayne State from my office. There are NO sorority houses at Wayne State. It's an urban, commuter campus and there are no sorority houses. It's a really unique situation because sisters can live 50-60 miles away from each other and all be in the same chapter at the same school. For this reason, Greek Life really helps students feel like they are part of the University. It is very easy at a school like this to just go to class and go home and hang out with all your friends from high school who didn't go away to school either. Getting involved really helps you feel like your University is your home at a commuter school.

All that said, there are not tons of wild parties. Most everybody is going home to their parents' house every night.

There are 4 NPC chapters at Wayne and they all have their strengths and weaknesses. Formal recruitment is in the fall. Go to it, meet the women and see where you feel most comfortable. That's your best plan :) Good luck!

ETA: Last I knew, dues were much cheaper than $300 a semester.. more around $200, but it has been a couple years since I worked directly with those women.

Do the sororities at WSU have a little suite or something? When I was working Spring Rush there, I saw a few (like 2 or 3) windows with letters on them. My assumption, though, is that those are just sisters' dorms and they've marked their windows.

itsjusttoni 07-29-2009 04:51 PM

KSUViolet06 and ForeverRoses, I appreciate your comments on living in the house and the general price... Definitely helpful. It's almost crazy to me that a sorority house can be and usually is cheaper than a dorm. It seems like so much more fun and much nicer.

Thank you! I tried for awhile to look up this stuff on Wayne State's website, but I just wasn't haven't much luck. Do you mind me asking about your experience with Greek life there?

That was seriously exactly what was so intriguing to be about the Greek system! As a commuter, I could see myself doing as you mentioned and not fully emerging myself in what the University has to offer. It's nice to have some insight into the parties and the dues, I really appreciate it. I'm definitely going to attend the formal recruitment in the fall... :)

I have nothing bad to say about my personal experience at WSU. It is mostly a commuter school but there are about 3000 students that live on or near campus, so once you get in the "know" of whats going on after class theres never a dull moment. And where did you see the painted windows, one one of the dorms or in the student center? I know each sorority had a room in the student center for there meetings and for storage.

Good to hear. I was a little concerned that, as a commuter, I wouldn't be able to get the full college experience. Did you do anything else through WSU that you'd recommend looking into?

Compared to Central in the mid 80's, WSU is a retirement village..lol. And no, I didn't go to CMU, I went to Eastern. Central outdid us by a landslide.

pshsx1 07-29-2009 10:48 PM

lol all of the big schools out do the Detroit area schools by a landslide.. can't ever change that fact.

Haha I was thinking the same things. I didn't even go to WSU and I still heard about their parties.

If you do join, don't be afraid to go to a party and be the lone sober one. I got all my drinking done before I was 21 and went to many a party as the designated driver. Just think that you'll be the only one who knows what REALLY happened when everyone's drunk asses are trying to recollect their foggy memory. :)

It's not helpful unless you're going to a non-commuter campus. No offense girls but every piece of info you gave is useless.

My experience at a commuter campus (in the same area) was that it kinda sucked without a house. But the perks are huge... dues are WAY cheaper than those with a house!

Get involved. It'll make your experience feel more like going to college rather than high school all over again. Are you living in the dorms or commuting?

Hahaha, so true about being the DD. I'm sure it could make for an interesting night just WATCHING everyone else, :p. I'm going to be commuting... I know that I'm probably missing out on a huge chunk of the experience, but my scholarship covers full-tuition and I was too weary about taking out a loan just for housing when the commute isn't bad. I figure the money could be better used elsewhere... Hope I wasn't too wrong!

I totally missed like 4 posts somehow...

Anyway, I'm assuming it was on a dorm building? The only building I know on campus is the Freshman dorm tower... they all live in the big ugly one, right?

But WSU is awesome b/c of the underground tunnels. I am SO jealous... I'd be 10x more motivated to go to class in the Winter with those.

I didn't know WSU had underground tunnels... They never mentioned it while at orientation during the tour. It seems like something they'd be sure to bring up. I know they emphasized on them when I visited Northern Mich.

toni, i attended college in florida when the drinking age was 18, and more often than not i did not drink at sorority events and i still had a good time. the bar where my house hung out most often served only beer(in bottles) and coca-cola(in bottles)-i'm not a beer drinker so i drank cokes, and had a great time and never was made to feel like a misfit by my sisters who would enjoy a beer or 2 as they played foosball or shot pool. you should be fine.

Lol, I don't even drink pop anymore! :p Juice it is! Lol, but I get what you're saying and I appreciate your response. From all of the responses, it seems that the choice is up to me and that my decision will be respected either way.

Psi U MC Vito 07-30-2009 01:43 PM

Yup. Also from what i've seen at other sororities they would be happy if you choose not to drink. I have one friend who doesn't want to drink until she is legal. Her sisters love her for that because that means somebody who wants to drink can instead of being sober sister, because she always volunteers for it.
