Mom kills, dismembers, and attempts to eat baby.

**WARNING: Graphic details to follow **

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A woman charged with murdering her 3 1/2-week-old son used a knife and two swords to dismember the child and ate parts of his body, including his brain, before stabbing herself in the torso and slicing her own throat, police said Monday.

Otty Sanchez, 33, is charged with capital murder in the death of her infant son, Scott Wesley Buchholtz-Sanchez. She was recovering from her wounds at a hospital, and was being held on $1 million bail.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said the early Sunday morning attack occurred a week after the child's father moved out. The child's aunt and two cousins, ages 5 and 7, were in the house, but none were harmed.

McManus, who appeared uncomfortable as he addressed reporters, said Sanchez apparently ate the child's brain and some other body parts. She also tore his face off, chewed off three of his toes and decapitated the infant before stabbing herself.

"It's too heinous for me to describe it any further," McManus said.

Officers called to Sanchez's house at about 5 a.m. Sunday found her sitting on the couch "screaming that she killed her baby," police spokesman Joe Rios said. They found the boy's body in a bedroom.

Police said Sanchez said the devil told her to kill her son.

What.in.the.holy.hell...

I'll have to read the entire article once I get home, but this is ridiculous.

pshsx1 07-27-2009 04:06 PM

I actually just yelled out 'what the hell?!'

Now I'm just speechless... Sad...

these instances are beyond hideous and frightening and all the more reason to stress the importance of professional intervention in severe cases of postpartum psychosis.

It's funny how when people do something sick and stupid, they always say "the devil made me do it." so they can plead insanity.

Whatever.

If you read the article, it says that "Otty Sanchez's aunt, Gloria Sanchez, said her niece had been "in and out" of a psychiatric ward, and that the hospital called several months ago looking to check up on her." I doubt that Ms. Sanchez was in her right mind when she did these things. Post partum depression and post partum psychosis are very real things and when people who have pps aren't receiving proper care, things like this can happen. When you read about Andrea Yates' full case, you find out that what happened with her children could've been prevented as well.

I read, and it said she was being checked on, so that tells me they knew she was sick. I know those are very real issues, but if they already knew she was sick, then why was she out of the hospital? If they would have kept her there and continued treatment, this wouldn't have happened.

Supposedly, in the 70s David Berkowitz said a dog told him to murder people. C'mon! Give me a break! Some people just really need to take responsibility for their own actions. Half the time, I honestly don't think anyone has told anyone to do anything, they just did it. What about the guy in Michigan who dismembered his wife and placed her body parts all over the place? I guess the devil told him to do it too. I understand she's sick, but why was she out of the hospital and in the presence of her baby?

I'm not in a position to speculate for why she is out of the hospital. It is possible that she was allowed to have contact with her baby if someone else was present (see, Andrea Yates case), and someone dropped the ball on supervision.

And to me there is a difference between a serial killer saying that his neighbor's dog told him to committ murder, and a mentally ill woman who finally succumbed to her illness.

You do understand how this is very different from the story this thread is about, right?

Very tragic and disturbing story. :(

DaemonSeid 07-27-2009 05:27 PM

something else too that caught my eye...the father of the baby had just recently just moved out....I wonder if that was the straw...

CutiePie2000 07-27-2009 06:06 PM

This story made me think of that horrific Greyhound bus murder which happened last year in Canada. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_McLean

This is too awful for words.

Educate yourself in mental health before you make comments like the ones you've been posting.

When I read this, my stomach turned. I sent it to live-in and he looked green. So incredibly sad. And to think, there's people out there who believe that postpartum depression and psychosis don't exist... even if this lady was nutty to start, I'm sure pps had to play a part. People don't just eat babies because they're crazy - there has to be something else going on there.

I'm not in that position either. The fact that she was out and shouldn't have been (especially around a child) is what I don't understand.

I agree, there is a difference because there are different mental illnesses, but the fact is, both are mentally ill and need help.

That's true, assuming that some aren't just "evil."

There should be more information released in the next few days. I can't promise I'll want to read it. This whole thing grosses me out and makes me sad and angry.

DaemonSeid 07-27-2009 10:27 PM

One other place I posted this story and no one made it past 5 words for 2 pages...this is the sickest thing I think I may have read in years and I think I literally almost lost my lunch.

I don't believe I've ever seen a million dollar bail. I wish she had been taken this seriously before the tragedy occurred.

My thoughts went to the police, EMS, firefighters who certainly would have shown up to an emergency call. This is the kind of thing that would haunt those poor people for the rest of their lives. :(

tld221 07-28-2009 12:25 AM

i went back to read the story and yeah, that was pretty gross. i can't imagine being that touched. but i hear post-partum is very serious - that alone scares me.

Penguin08 07-28-2009 12:26 AM

WTF????... Like why?... Like... I'm speechless....

When the Greyhound bus incident happened in Canada, we were all sickened and horrified. I think what makes this all the more horrifying is that it was done to a defenceless infant.

Good Lord DS, you find the most morbid stories. And why do I always read them even though I know they're going to make me sick and want to run to daycare and go give my kiddos extra tight hugs...

DaemonSeid 07-28-2009 10:58 AM

dang...wait....

How do I get blamed for this?

What was the last morbid story I found?

**scared of the answer**

Give your kids a hug anyway. Our world sucks and kids need the love and protection from their parents.

Heck, if DS didn't post them, someone else would. I suppose this is his PSA attempt

jojapeach 07-28-2009 01:13 PM

I've never felt this extreme combination of sadness, disgust, disbelief, and nausea. I can only pray for everyone involved and all of us with these images in our minds. I really pray that God has mercy on the mother's soul.

I think the dog mauling the baby was the last one I read that made me want to cry...

I do, lots of them every day. I'm going to be so sad when my son starts getting too cool to give his mom a hug and a kiss every day before school...
