Better Late Than Never...My Philly Fall '08 Recruitment Story

I've always wanted to share my story, unbiased. I want to post it since its still somewhat fresh in my head. Of course schools pretty much over for me haha. It has a happy ending :)

So I'm a freshman, and I got moved in by a group of girls in a sorority. Let's call them the Phillies (I go to school in Philadelphia haha, deal with my Philadelphia references). They all seemed so pretty and nice, and pointed to me their pin and told me to rush them in a few weeks. So I went into formal recruitment definitely biased.....

Here are the 5 sorority code names we have on our campus:
Franklin
Liberty
Phillies
76ers
Rocky

And here are our Rounds:
Round One: Meet and Greet - 5 houses
Round Two: Philanthropy Night - 4 houses
Round Three: Pref Night - 2 houses
Bid Day

We'll see what happens.....

groovypq 06-08-2009 01:36 PM

I love the Phillies!!! (and I love that you didn't use the Eagles as a reference) :-) fun code!

twinkle555 06-08-2009 01:49 PM

yay! im reading and ready for an update!

lovespink88 06-08-2009 01:51 PM

I'm rooting for Franklin, because now every time I hear him mentioned, I think of that episode of The Office...lol

Round One: I’m so excited. I don’t really stress over my outfit too much, I just put on my business casual that is appropriate and I feel comfortable in. I was so excited to see the Phillies again, especially since I had met more of their girls and run into them all over campus and at parties. Me and 2 other girls on my floor rushed, they really wanted Liberty and I really wanted Phillies at this point.

Franklin: My first house. They started off with a funny fashion show that was headed by a hilarious blonde fashion design major that immediately talked to me after the skit. I clicked with her immediately, being that my major was fashion merchandising, and knew that my rankings were going to be tough. My only concern was that they might be too stereotypically ‘preppy’ for my taste in a school that’s smack dab in the middle of a major city.

Rocky: Second house. The house tour showed a huge, lovely house. The girls were really athletic and well rounded, but I just didn’t get that strong of a connection as I did with any of the girls I spoke to like at the first house. The girls all seemed to kind of look alike and none of them really stood out, but I was willing to give them another chance.

Liberty: These girls kicked ass. It was like every stereotype of a sorority I had seen broken – in a very good and cool way. You could tell they were the rockstars of campus. None of the girls looked like each other, I ended up talking to a sports management major who I clicked with (haha the opposite of my fashion major) and thought the house was lovely, decorated in black and red (those aren’t their sorority colors though, don’t get too excited ha). I saw photos of Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn, which was always a plus in my book. I was pleased.

Phillies: The house I was most anxious to go to. It was everything I remembered it to be from the first tour I got of it. All the girls who had moved me in remembered my name and complimented my outfit and they showed a Sex In The City skit that I fell in love with. They were so fashionable, girly, beautiful, and chic, and everything I wanted to be. When I was leaving, the president said my name and said “See you later!” and I was THRILLED.

76ers: The last house. I was getting tired from spending 45 minutes each at all the previous houses. The house was nice from what I could see but they weren’t even giving tours of the individual rooms like all the other houses did. The girls seemed a bit odd and everyone in my group came to the consensus that this was the least desirable house. We just stood in the back and munched on their food and avoided talking for the last 20 minutes we had to be there.

I only knew which house I did NOT want to go back to after Round One, so my rankings were:
1. Phillies
2. Liberty
3. Franklin
4. Rocky
5. 76ers

My thoughts exactly. We had a few PNMs like this come through and it was miserable trying to hold a conversation with someone so obviously above us

OP: I know you're going for honesty, but not being interested in a group is never an excuse to be rude to the sisters. Given the info you've provided, it's pretty obvious where you go to school. Anyone who knows the Greek system there could easily identify your code and, potentially, who you are. I'd advise a little more discretion.

That's what I thought at first, but I think she means they had buttons that said "I Love XYZ" or something like that.

AOIIalum 06-08-2009 09:33 PM

jetage, I've got a feeling that my son will be headed to your school this fall and I can never figure out schools in these stories. Please, keep sharing but remember discretion!

I'm dumber than a post at figuring out schools, and I got this one immediately. At least she had the brains to not match the colors with all the houses.

Future rush story writers (current or retro): there are LOTS of Pennsylvania people on this board. Use an extra lump of discretion.

OhSeven 06-08-2009 11:22 PM

PHILADELPHIA!!! Love it!! Ahhh so glad for this.

OOOooohhhh. Wow I can't believe I didn't get that. Thanks.

Anyway, on with the story!

twinkle555 06-09-2009 12:35 AM

Goooo Liberty!

qbt1990 06-10-2009 08:03 PM

continue... please! :)

CuriousWildcat 06-10-2009 11:00 PM

Yes more please!

GammaDelt 06-12-2009 05:43 PM

Excuse me....WHERE are the Eagles? Lol.

kiteflyersmom 06-12-2009 08:13 PM

I am never able to figure out the school. But for once, I think I did (Penn????). If I don't have it right, I will go back to my seat with my head down......

I think the OP may have thought better about continuing this after giving away so much information.

I think you're right about the giving too much info away part. However, I'm 99.9% sure of what the school is, and it's not Penn.

(Don't worry, I'm bad at knowing the schools too ;). The only reason I figured it out this time was because my job hasn't started, and I have LOTS of time on my hands...so I decided to try to figure it out, since there were just a few schools, and she gave some big hints!)

ASUADPi 06-13-2009 11:59 AM

I never figure out the schools.

But I'm guessing that the reason the OP isn't posting is because she was scared off.

kiteflyersmom 06-13-2009 11:28 PM

On the other hand, maybe the OP should continue, given that there are people like me that can't figure out the school, even if their life depended on it. :)

als463 06-14-2009 07:36 PM

Drexel?

I'm from Pennsylvania and I'm thinking she meant...Drexel. Does anyone else agree? Its really not too hard to figure certain schools out in certain states because of the information people give out. I think the OP should still go on and share her experience (without putting other chapters down, of course).

It's kind of bad form to out the school unless the OP does so or wants people to guess.

LAblondeGPhi 06-16-2009 03:12 AM

Come back! I hate this teasing, and there's no excuse...

Unless... the Fall '08 story ended up with the OP not joining any house, and she's planning to go through recruitment again in the fall, in which case the lack of discretion has forever harmed her chances of getting her super favorite chapter in the fall. Oooh, plot twist.

You know, I could just make things up until you come back...

OhSeven 06-16-2009 10:18 AM

Aw I thought this was going to be an interesting thread. I think it's lame that people had to post her school and kind of scare her away from sharing what could have been a good, interesting story that probably at least meant something to her.

Ya, I agree. It seems unusual that her school would be outed so quickly.

So quickly as her own original post?

I agree that it is poor form for anyone to out a poster's school, and such actions should not be tolerated. However, as someone who has never even been to Pennsylvania I was able to figure out her school very quickly. When you post what city your university is in, mention the time of year of your recruitment, and then post how many chapters there are, you have outed yourself. Plain and simple.

I would have a little more sympathy for her had she not made an incredibly rude remark about one of the chapters. Recognizing that a house is not for you is one thing. Being rude during a recruitment party and then making disparaging comments about its members on a public internet board... totally different story.

OhSeven 06-16-2009 01:44 PM

Poor jetage.

She probably just didn't know any better. If I were writing my own recruitment story I would probably include at least the state and time of year, and I don't think there's any way to get out of how many chapters are present. A lot of freshmen/new girls make mistakes like that. I mean, people have told me that back when they were freshmen if they had a hard time deciding they'd rank sororities during rush by how pretty the house/suite was or if they liked how the letters looked. Lol. Oh well. I wish we could have read the rest of this as a PHL person myself but it is what it is.

This is so true. Some people don't understand the concept of DISCRETION.

Agreed 10000%. There is absolutely no excuse for being rude at a recruitment party and then making mean comments about them like that.

This is so ridiculous how the "brutally honest" retro thread posters think it's OK to behave that way just because recruitment is already over.

I wasn't trying to be hateful-I assumed everyone else picked up on the school. I'm sorry. Even though my GLO does very well at that school, I still don't like the way she talked about other chapters....Had she said GOOD stuff throughout the post about each chapter-I would not have felt the need to question whether or not it was Drexel. Next time, I will keep to myself but, it was mentioned on here that she pretty much outted herself. Ooops!

I stand by the notion that being overly obvious about details is still different from actually saying the name of the school. Even if only for the sake of being searchable when you look for "University X" posts.

:)

Valid point.

AOII Angel 06-16-2009 06:32 PM

I don't think that you can say ugly things about a group while being obvious about who or where you're talking about on this site without being called out. I don't see any problem with naming the school since just the fact that people posted about finding the name easily will prompt any average person to find the school in three clicks. als63 just saved everyone a little time.

Thank you. As said before-I wasn't trying to be hateful. In fact, instead of getting upset FOR the OP, maybe we should be a little more disgusted that she has pretty much disrespected a GLO on her campus and (once again) only a few clicks away or KNOWING people who attend this University makes it easy to figure out what chapter she is talking about. As someone who has a GLO at that campus, I'm a bit irritated that she felt the need to tell us how hateful she was to this GLO that was trying to get to know her and other PNMs.

Deciding that a chapter is "undesirable" and standing in the back while eating their food and ignoring them is just plain....B****y. No one can argue that. I'm almost curious, however, to know where she went. I'm just hoping she isn't a member of my GLO trash talking other chapters on campus. That would be very disappointing...:(

Weird observations:

There are 2 Philly-related stories going on at the same time (one with a PhillyGirl username and another taking place in Philly).

That they have the colored-in code names, just like eaglesbaby (who I think was named that b/c she liked the Philly Eagles).

Not trying to be a conspiracy theorist or anything, this is all just very odd.

KSUViolet, I'll ride the conspiracy theorist bandwagon all around Philadelphia with you - I'm glad you had the balls to call her out on it.

Could someone please clarify something about this story for me though. Never having gone through sorority recruitment myself, I was under the impression that you were sort of given to a sister as you walked in the door and bumped around to other sisters while at the party. I assumed that you wouldn't even have the option of being so rude as to hide behind the snack table because you would be "forced" to talk to someone. What's the deal?

Sort of what I was thinking.

I know that every school is different, but generally, sorority members are paired off with PNMs and and that sister will eventually pair the PNM with another sister, and so on, so there's no really opportunity to go "sit back by the snac bar and ignore everyone." You're always talking to someone.

And to be honest, I doubt that a room full of sorority members isn't going to notice them doing so and attempt to engage them in conversation.

As someone who lives in the Philly 'burbs - I noticed this too, but just thought that was me being a consipirist...

Also, while Villanova isn't in Philly "proper" -- its pretty close and it and has 9 sororities.

I completely agree with you! I was excited when I saw a new recruitment thread (this one), slightly disappointed when I came to the realization that this one would never finish, and then EXTREMELY skeptical when another Philadelphia recruitment thread came out. I WANT to believe that these two stories, especially the beach one which is still looking like it's going to continue, are real...but with recent events (eaglesbaby), I can't help but be doubtful. I hope I'm proven wrong!

And yes, the whole thing with TWO Philadelphia storys and eaglesbaby = Philadelphia Eagles, too much of a coincidence.

As does Delaware. However, both have deferred recruitment. The OP implies a fall formal recruitment.
