Why don't we have a Motto??

I apologize if there's another thread with this topic...

but why don't we have a motto? I think we should have one.. I mean, most other sororities do..

Pardon the crash but I had to respond to this.

Why would you want to be like other sororities that have motto's? Celebrate the uniqueness of your organization instead of complaining & comparing it to other GLO's.

If a motto means that much to you, you're in the wrong organization.

KSUViolet06 06-01-2009 10:10 PM

There are different sororities that don't have certain things for one reason or another.

Example:

AOII does not have a crest.
Tri Sigma does not have a mascot (we have symbols only).

BabyPiNK_FL 06-01-2009 11:07 PM

Phi Mu has no jewel. I've always wanted one! We do wear pearls at recruitment a lot, but nothing official :( . It's not the end of the world though...

LucyKKG 06-02-2009 03:08 AM

Gamma Phi Beta doesn't have a mascot (like an animal one) either.

I believe they have used the Gammie (sp?) Bug.

AOII Angel 06-02-2009 07:48 AM

AOII doesn't have an open motto. Our motto is the meaning of our name so we can't display it like other groups. That's okay with me....our motto is enough!:D

Beryana 06-02-2009 08:56 AM

AOII doesn't officially have a mascot either - the panda is unofficial and I know a few chapters that use something else.

That is all part of what makes each group unique. There is no cookie-cutter form to creating a sorority/fraternity. This is a rhetorical question, but Delta Zeta probably has some meaning which is similar to a motto without actually saying "this is our motto. . . . " And, as far as an open motto, a LOT of groups don't have those. They have marketing taglines but not open mottos like Gamma Phi Beta and Kappa Delta.

Yes - I actually kinda liked the Gammie Bug, but she was retired. There was discussion of reviving her this past convention, but nothing happened. Many of our chapters adopt an unofficial mascot - my chapter used the ladybug.

Scrubadub 06-02-2009 01:16 PM

We don't have a motto either. Our chapter had an individual, unofficial motto we used, which is something I'm sure you could do if you really wanted, but our Sorority doesn't.

As everyone else has said, just because most other organizations have one doesn't mean you should. Our founders obviously didn't see the need for one: I personally think the meaning of our name/letters is enough for me.

Sorry to crash but Theta does not have a mascot either or an official jewel. Votes have been taken in recent years to change this but we overwhelmingly vote to keep things as they are to keep us unique from others.

I am sure that were Theta to adopt either a jewel or a mascot it would still manage to be unique. :) (But I do understand not wanting to have something only because others do - that is why I don't worry about having a mascot.)

ISUKappa 06-02-2009 05:52 PM

Kappa doesn't have an open motto, either. We have a marketing tagline that corresponds with our branding ("A Tradition of Leadership") but no open fraternity motto.

SWTXBelle 06-02-2009 06:36 PM

Slight hijack . . .

How many of your GLOs have "taglines"? And what are they?

Gamma Phi Beta - Connect. Impact. Shine.

AOII exceed the expectation

D_Crayola_Z 06-02-2009 06:41 PM

thanks guys.
i was only asking because in a way i feel an official motto (whether its solely within the sorority or public) would be beneficial to for encouraging members to present themselves in a classy, respectable manner.
I understand that every org is unique and i know whats special to me about mine, and i guess i shouldnt have compared it the way i did.
sorry to single you out BetteDavisEyes, but i was not complaining, i was simply pointing it out and asking a question.

Alpha Chi Omega- Real. Strong. Women.

It's part of our newish branding program. I really love it. :)

ETA: Alpha Chi doesn't really have a mascot either, unless you think of the lyre (I think of it as a symbol). The only days that I wish we had a mascot are the ones where I'm trying to find lyre stuff for big/little!

Ah, yeah I didn't think there was anything official. The Gamma Phi chapter on my campus doesn't use anything really. Crescent moon, carnation...yeah!

SWTXBelle 06-02-2009 07:09 PM

Does A Chi O use the lyre bird? I thought I remembered that as their mascot . . . but maybe it was just the Lamar chapter.

eta - I'll start a new thread in Greek Life rather than continue to hijack the Delta Zeta's thread.

twhrider13 06-05-2009 03:27 AM

We do have a "motto" (only I'm not 100% certain that's the official name). It's just secret.

I was thinking the same thing after reading the OP's post. I can think of that specific thing or we do have "Delta Zeta- Enriching" which is all over the NM materials and website-- so that might also count.

MimiLovesDZ 12-19-2009 06:34 PM

I have heard this before but its not official: If a Guy is Dating a Delta Zeta he needs to raise his glass, If a guy isnt dating a Delta Zeta he needs to raise his standards

This is so not exclusive to DZ. I think every sorority has put their letters into this quote lol

YES.

Add to this list the David Letterman quotation (that references Chi Omega) from his book that has been attributed to every single sorority in the NPC at some point.
