Should I pledge an NPHC sorority even though I am graduating this semester?

I am graduating this semester and I was sort of rushing for an NPHC sorority cause it was something I have always wanted to do. However, Now that I got an invitation I don't know if its worth doing this while I am in my last semester of college? Is it worth doing this whole process when I am graduating in less than 2 months?

Fraternities and sororities are not just college groups. If you got an invitation, you should know that.

Hell yes. Then again...if you have to ask that question, maybe you really don't want to be in that sorority. As a sisterfriend let me tell you it does NOT get any easier. If you got an invite, take it.

'Cuz we can only guess which school you attend... LOL...

Oh here's a site that would LOVE to assist you in this decision!!!

WTF? Which one of the NPHC sororities is a "bad" one?

So are you only considered a member of a sorority while IN SCHOOL?

Color me surprised.

I guess I'd better turn my pin and my letters in now, because I haven't actually been a member for 2 years now in that case.

You haven't been an acutally member. That's the correct way to say that sentence.

Ummm... That really wasn't a question meant to be answered publicly...

So much for discretion! http://www.pledgepark.com/images/smilies/jumping.gif

I understand...I just wanted to know cause I am going to NYU for grad school, so I didn't know if I should just wait until I start graduate school in the fall, or just do it as an undergrad. I apologize if I disrespected anyone, didn't mean to cause any trouble

Ohhhh!!! Grad school at NYU for what? Just asking? :)

uclaplaya2 03-25-2009 01:28 AM

How come those 2? What makes you excited?

uclaplaya2 03-25-2009 01:38 AM

I always wanted to be a film maker and I did africana studies because of my family background (My family is from Eritrea). Even though graduating with a degree in Film at UCLA is good, NYU is giving me and others the opportunity to go to Africa and make a documentary about the current events that are occurring in Eritrea and Ethiopia. Also I have never been to New York, I am really excited to live in the East Coast before going to Africa.

So given those plans, how come you want to join an NPHC Sorority, now?

uclaplaya2 03-25-2009 03:44 AM

it has been something that I have been wanting to do since freshman year. I honestly never took the time to do it because I was too busy studying all the time to try to keep my grades up so I can keep my scholarships. Now that I am all set for the fall, I want to finally do one of the things that I have been wanting to do for a long time.

I just keep 2nd guessing myself because it is my last semester as an undergrad, plus my family who never been in any org., or college don't really understand and keep telling me that its not worth it. I just came on here to see what people who are already in NPHC thinking about someone who might be doing the MIP process there final semester.

Little32 03-25-2009 10:11 AM

lol. So Eritrea, UCLA, gradschool at NYU. Can't be that big of a pool. lol. Discretion.

Good luck in graduate school though, it sounds like an interesting course of study.

Did you get an invitation to join on paper or just an invite to the rush? You have a lot of research to do IN REAL LIFE and not on a message board...

Yesterday was March 24th right????

When does your school officially ends its Spring semester? Just wondering...

uclaplaya2 03-25-2009 12:36 PM

The last day of finals is May 20th, and I have done my research

Munchkin03 03-25-2009 12:52 PM

I'm calling shenanigans. My college best friend went to NYU for film school, and never did she or her classmates call it "film making" school. Also, unless you're paying a ton ton of money you're not studying the two fields. Tisch is so exhausting as a student that it's impossible to take classes outside of the program.

Peace out...perping a prospective member! Har har har.

Its called Filmmaking its an MFA degree offered at NYU, where I get to focus on directing and writing. As for Africana Studies program, you are required to go for a semester in Africa. I worked it out where I get to study a year at NYU for the filmmaking program then go to africa where I can make a documentary for my thesis.

This is no shenanigans, Like i said before I spent too much time during school studying my butt off so I can have this opportunity that is why I waited last minute to decide if I want to join a greek org.

Just in case you wanted to know if its called "film making school" check it out here

The excitement you have for your graduate school and future studies, should be the same excitement you have to serve your community through an NPHC sorority. If you're not sure you can handle the load of work these organizations entail (beyond the MIP process) perhaps you should think about it a few years more...

Focus on your studies.

DaemonSeid 03-25-2009 01:35 PM

Don't join.

Save your Money.

Save them the grief.

You're too 'busy', remember?

Strive 03-25-2009 01:56 PM

Sisterfriend,

Accept the invitation only if the sorority is your choice. Trust me, they already know this is your last semester in college. They probably know your goals. When sororities send out invitation, they normally do some research. Sororities and Fraternities do not send out blind invitations.

Yes, but their calendar indicates that the last day of finals for the spring quarter is June 12. Maybe she meant that the last day of final exams for the winter quarter is March 20?

(I have too much time on my hands.)

My final class days is May 20 I am taking individual study classes for my African studies, I finish early so I have a week to prepare for my thesis before classes end.

Wow you are a very pessimistic person, all I wanted was some help on this question and all you do is attack me.

After hearing what every said and I put some thought into it I made my decision...thanks everyone

Why is it that haven't introduced yourself in the AKA forum yet?

Why is it that you keep dodging and ignoring posts asking why you haven't introduced yourself in the AKA forum?

I was thinking the same thing!

Plus, why does she post stupid things like "Okay...." or "co-sign" without further explanation? Why is she wasting space?

Ummm. Did you mean to quote me without looking at my profile??? I did not come through my Sorority through an MIP, I pledged...

Secondly, I posted it to see what she would say...

Lastly, I have quite a few degrees and am over a certain age, making me very ole skool. So, I am unsure about your meaning of your post?

Not to be mean, but, I will be meeting with some Los Angeles sorors this weekend... This will stop their process with the screen shots I am taking because it is making public of a membership process that is suppose to be private...

UCLAplaya:

If the UCLA chapter asked you into them membership of an NPHC sorority and you have the required letters and documents, you also signed an affidavit saying that you would keep this information private and discreet, within yourself, the chapter and loved ones.

You just broadcasted on the internet that you have commenced someone's membership intake process, and that you have been extended an invitation a membership. Meaning you have violated the trust and sanctity of this private matter jeopardizing your membership...

You are walking on very thin ice... I have reported before, I will do it again...

Cease and desist...

LOL! Wow! You definitely misunderstood what I was saying. You asked the OP, "what makes you excited?" I quoted this question specifically for her, not you!

Obviously, she should express the same excitement in wanting to join an NPHC sorority - or any organization for that matter, that she expresses for her future studies, as they are both important, life-altering ventures. The OP also specifically mentioned MIP. I was going off of her previous post...

Of course, I wouldn't tell you to focus on your studies. That again, was for the OP. She was talking about her graduate program and I was simply responding that joining an organization doesn't seem to be her priority...
