The Sears Tower to be re-named Willis Tower

This may pertain mostly to Chicago area GreekChatters, but since it is currently the tallest building in the U.S. I thought I'd post it here.

Tallest U.S. Building to Get New Name

A blog from the Tribune: Willis We Always Call it the Sears Tower? No, we won't-is.

People always say how they won't call something by their new name, especially in the naming of arena's, etc., but is this a different situation? Will people always call it the Sears Tower, no matter the name?

My thoughts are that because the Sears Tower is "kindof a big deal" and will remain some sort of tourist attraction, we'll be calling it that for quite a while after the name change.

knight_shadow 03-12-2009 01:16 PM

Ehh, I'll always call it the Sears Tower.

KSig RC 03-12-2009 01:19 PM

I hope it was named after Wesley Willis, because that would whip a horse's ass with a belt.

Since it's actually appropriate here...

^^^ That was the first thing I thought of when I saw the thread LOL

damn. too late.

agzg 03-12-2009 01:25 PM

I can't claim the joke - it's been in every blog entry, article, and TV news story. I wasn't going to use it but I folded to the all encompassing liberal media.

PS. It would not be appropriate for a Republican to use that joke. Gary Coleman's a Democrat.

He's actually a midget - I'm surprised you didn't know that.

agzg 03-12-2009 01:29 PM

That has no relevance to the joke, however. It's obvious the joke has political ramifications, so only his political affiliation matters.

Actually, I don't know his political affiliation - I think he may be independent.

If that's the truth, you heard it hear first - Chicago Democrats have claimed him (ETA: Especially because he was born in Illinois). Now, on to machine politics!

Is this thread more stupid than the Barnes & Noble thread? That's what I was going for.

Not yet. We still need deepimpact2 to talk in circles before it gets to that point.

agzg 03-12-2009 01:34 PM

Oh it's alright - she'll probably weigh in on how it was inappropriate for KSig RC to use the term "midget" when "little person" is the accepted term. Then she's going to boycott Kappa Sigma.

knight_shadow 03-12-2009 01:39 PM

Based on your previous posts, even if you use the term "little person" I bet you all still have ill-will toward midgets. This is why midget-ism is so prevalent in society today.

agzg 03-12-2009 01:41 PM

It will only go away when people stop ignoring the issues!

Willis Tower will never be safe from the terrorists as long as there is midget-ism in the world!

agzg 03-12-2009 01:42 PM

On a more serious note - live-in works across the street from the Sears Tower. I'm pretty sure that as long as he goes to get lunch at one of the little restaurants in the building he will be calling it the Sears Tower.

knight_shadow 03-12-2009 01:43 PM

That's it. I'm suing Willis.

And Sears.

And Chicago.

Whatever it takes to bring national attention to midget-ism.

Hasn't it been the Sears Tower for as long as it's been open? I can't see it changing (in our minds) anytime soon. Plus, it's going to be expensive rebranding everything with Willis material.

agzg 03-12-2009 01:44 PM

Which Willis are you going to sue?

I wonder if they're the same Willis?

Yes it has. There's the Sears-Roebuck name engraved all over the inside. However, they sold the building and moved out in the 90s, I think.

ETA: I should add, word is that Willis actually just signed a lease for a huge chunk of the building. They didn't buy it.

33girl 03-12-2009 01:59 PM

Actually Gary Coleman's short stature is due to the kidney problem he's had all his life. He is not a midget, dwarf or little person.

(I was a child in the 1970s. Sue me.)

knight_shadow 03-12-2009 02:01 PM

^^^ Did you miss the B&N thread? We were joking about that.

AGDee 03-12-2009 02:19 PM

I hate when they change building names. The GM Building is STILL The GM Building even if GM isn't in it anymore. I will never call it Cadillac Square in conversation. It's the GM Building because it was built to be the GM Building. If the Sears tower was built to be the Sears Tower, then it's name should be left alone.

By the way, yesterday was a new moon, which explains a lot of stuff around here.

Agreed! I also hate it when they change sporting areas.....Tropicana Field in St. Pete (Where the Rays play) has had 5 different names in 20 years....my mom still calls it the Sun Dome....

The St. Pete Times Forum is in Tampa......makes no sense....

Also the St. Pete Times Forum changes name all the time....its was the Ice Palace before which makes more sense because the Lightning play there!
