Mardi Gras 2009

Anyone from GC down in New Orleans this year? Tonight is the Proteus parade and rumor has it that float #7 (right side) would be likely to respond to anyone IDing themselves as a GC member. Tomorrow during the Rex parade float #13 (left side) would be a good bet.

Awww that's kind of cool.... I wish I was there!

Smile_Awhile 02-23-2009 08:41 PM

I wish! We're having a date party though tomorrow night for the occasion... The giant stock pot of jambalaya is in the oven right now, and we made four king cakes on Saturday. I'm Cajun cooked out.

Laissez les bon temps roulez!!! Have fun!!! My Poche's Turduchen is still frozen. Don't know how I am going to get a hold of Mudbugs... Do have some crawfish etouffee!!!

I had the opportunity to meet dekeguy a few years ago when I was in town for Mardi Gras, but unfortunately, it didn't happen. I don't remember much of my two weeks there, all I can remember is that I had the greatest time ever. The Krewe of Endymion ball was UNBELIEVABLE.

It was the last Mardi Gras before Katrina hit.

KSigkid 02-23-2009 09:20 PM

That sounds awesome, wish I was down there. I went in 2002 with a group of people (including KSigRC), and it was an amazing time. One of our buddies is from New Orleans, and his house was right in the middle of everything.

Honeykiss1974 02-23-2009 09:39 PM

I haven't been since Katrina. :( This thread makes me want to go again.

I can imagine a group of people yelling "Greekchat! Greekchat!" LOL (me being one of them)

AnchorAlumna 02-23-2009 11:25 PM

How would you ID yourself as greekchat?

It wouldn't be hard. Hold up a sign that you're on GC, shout out that you're on GC...there are a number of ways.

Flash him and GC painted on your boobs would probably be most effective.

It's great. I was there in December for a childhood friend's wedding, and I had a blast. I needed to leave because I was having too much fun.

New Orleans is where we went for our honeymoon. Perfect for a honeymoon!

Wish I was there! But have fun! A family friend was queen of Mystery this past weekend. I had a great time a couple of weeks ago at Athenians, which turned 100 this year. Gotta love Carnival Season in New Orleans!

AOII Angel 02-24-2009 02:22 PM

Wow...y'all are making me hungry for some King Cake and etouffe! I'm sad now :(

blueGBI 02-24-2009 03:05 PM

I was going to bake a king cake this year but I forgot. :(

I want to go back down next year. I haven't been down in 10 years, I need to visit.

honeychile 02-24-2009 03:48 PM

I just met my English friend & her mum last week, who came to the States for Elvis and Mardi Gras (don't ask!). I made sure that I told her mother not to lift her shirt when she was asked - I have the feeling she would be the first one to earn her beads!

jojapeach 02-24-2009 06:55 PM

Awww... I went to New Orleans once (the day after Mardi Gras ended) for a convention. I couldn't afford to go a day early. :( But listening to the Nawlins people I know who treasure Mardi Gras and just reading these comments makes my heart glow with that great NO feeling. *le sigh*

My husband and I have already decided to try to go back to New Orleans together for a holiday one year. Maybe a private Cajun Christmas. :)

carnation 02-24-2009 10:09 PM

A friend took her family to Mardi Gras events in Lake Charles last week and their toddler ran into our house and showered us with beads! They brought us a King Cake too.

I am so wanting beignets and cafe au lait right now.

ZTAMich 02-24-2009 10:50 PM

I posted on Facebook about Faschnaut Day and got a long discussion with about 15 comments about not only them but Paczki and pancakes. I love Fat Tuesday!

......same here......sigh
been there twice, last time was 1999, my traveling buddy got called back home to work, so I hit the town solo. This was until a group of revelers dressed as lobsters took me in. Other than they buying the drinks, and alot of walking, it was a blur of a night.

OTW,
Sorry we missed meeting when you were in NO for Mardi Gras. Glad you had a great time. Seems I only get back there for Mardi Gras and thats not even every year. I think Dorothy Parker's comment is appropriate here, "Work is the curse of the drinking class"!

All,
Can you spell exhausted? Fair amount of Champagne but mostly just a very long day and night. Ever fly an early bird flight still dressed in white tie and tails? I just don't think I'm going to be very productive today.

The rather tame version of Mardi Gras. I think its funny that everyone around here tries to go to other places for Mardi Gras, largely I don't understand. Most other places are small podunk towns that just block off like three blocks and let you get drunk in the middle of it. And everyone drives an hour to do it with the same people you just stay here and do it with.

But nonetheless, as usual, Lake Charles Mardi Gras was pretty great, I had to work til about 10, we drove down the parade route and there was a good amount of poeple there at about 7 in the morning.

aopirose 02-25-2009 09:48 PM

dekeguy, AWW I wish that you had posted this earlier! I'll bet that you were a sight in your tails but still very handsome.

A certain GCer is in Orpheus so Monday was out but we were at Gallier Hall most of Tuesday. We were right in front of the podium. Some friends are in Rex too and they were on #10 and #14.

Carnival was GREAT this season and I am pooped too. The weather was gorgeous and the crowds were good. Just finished some Crawfish Elegante and I'm waiting on the white chocolate bread pudding. mmmm
