Little Miss Perfect/Toddlers and Tiaras

Anybody watch these shows? I don't think Little Miss Perfect has started yet, but I caught Toddlers and Tiaras once or twice.

I babysat for a 6 year old who did pageants and I was always kind of fascinated by what would motivate a parent to get their kid started in this kind of thing. Not to mention all of the prep and such that went into it all.

I didn't agree with 90% of what was involved in pageants. I dunno, I feel like a little girl has the rest of her life to be concerned about make up, tanning, nails, not eating carbs, etc. Why start that in like 1st grade?

From what I have seen on the show, most of those moms are nuts. I think there may have been one or 2 kids who had normal moms though (i. e. the little girl in the more 'casual' pageant).

twinkle555 02-17-2009 07:23 PM

Im looking forward to Little Miss Perfect...not sure why..maybe because I dont know much about pageants and Id like to know more.

KSUViolet06 02-17-2009 07:32 PM

Another thing that amazes me is the COST of it all.

I remember talking to this little girl's mom and her telling me that the ENTRY FEES alone for the pageants are like $500.

Then you need a beauty dress, swimsuit, modeling outfit, talent outfit. Apparel alone is like $6,000 total. It adds up very quickly.

Does anyone else seem to notice that most of these kid's moms are not pretty? And some of the families don't appear to have a TON of disposable income (the kind I'd think you would have if you were going to spend $$ on this)? Like, you're living in an apt with 3 kids. Priorities anyone?

Unregistered- 02-17-2009 07:40 PM

I watched Toddlers and Tiaras in their first installment a few months ago, but have only been able to catch the commercials so far.

There's a million kinds of wrong with a 5 year old kid gyrating her hips like she's playing hula hoop, mimicking her mother.

LeslieAGD 02-17-2009 09:36 PM

I have to admit, I love watching T&T. It entertains and amazes me...and I totally agree with KSU about the cost and priorities. I think once the child is old enough to WANT to do it, then that's fine; but why anyone would want to put a frilly dress, hair extensions, and makeup on a BABY is beyond me.

What is Little Miss Perfect?

Same concept I think as T&T except on WE. It premieres tomorrow.

KSUViolet06 02-18-2009 01:16 AM

The pageant they featured tonight seemed alot less um, glitzy and crazy than previous ones.

Sidenote: Does anyone else think of BrandiRae when watching this??

epchick 02-18-2009 05:28 PM

Ahhh the Chitlin pageant? LMAO....oh these names!!

I really liked Allie and her mom. They had such a good attitude, and i'm glad they didn't use any artificial anything....and allie still won!

Thetagirl218 02-18-2009 06:52 PM

I think pagenats for little girls are a mix of weird and crazy.....

I had a friend in high school who was a year older than me who did some pageant during her senior year (Miss junior miss or something like that).

It was mostly a scholarship program and she got the state titles and earned thousands in scholarships....

One of my DG friends in college was into pageants and competed in tons, she did it as a pastime...

I can see a purpose when you are in your teens, but seriously...as a child?

VandalSquirrel 02-18-2009 10:05 PM

I watched one episode of Toddlers and Tiaras, and I was dying at the couple with the little girl Ava (sp?). The dad and mom were hysterical "If you need a dress beaded come to me, if you need a flat tire changed, go to her." totally remind me of people I know (sans the Jon Benet action).

That husband was a jackass, and that woman is a saint for staying with him.

I would have killed him before the baby came.

They had a weird dynamic going on. I couldn't put my finger on why it is they were married, lol.

You mean a gay man and his hag?

I'm sorry, that was mean.

YES. That's EXACTLY the type of relationship they had going on. Like a Will & Grace type deal. Not a hubby and wife kind of vibe at all.

*According to this show, "Diamonds IS a girl's best friend."

*That one kid's mom (Ashley's I think) is kind of a bitch. Especially with the "Well if you think I'm wrong for doing this, then you probably have an ugly child" line.

*You can really just look at some of these moms and tell that there's some "vicarious living" going on. As in, like I wasn't cute or didn't get to wear crowns as a kid, so I want my kid to do it.

*If you have to "mow extra lawns" to pay for pageants, you can't afford it.

*I see that some of those kids have siblings. I wonder how much attention some of these moms pay to their OTHER KIDS?? It would suck to have mom who only put her time and energy into your sister's pageants.

*The spray tanning thing makes me glad I'm black, lol. It looks so scary.

*I have to admit that Ashley's 70's themed skit thingy was cute.

Seriously, who thinks orange is a skin tone? I wish in general people could just be happy with who they are and like what God and genetic randomness gave them. Sure I am pale, but I don't look like an oompa loompa or have premature aging and skin cancer.

I also am very biased against bottle blondes, they always have roots and I am judgmental, I can see the roots, who has white blonde hair naturally as an adult, other than albinos?

agzg 02-19-2009 12:00 AM

I refuse to spray tan.

I like my freckles. They are my little buddies, who go with me wherever I go. I keep track of them, so that none of them are getting bigger. I make sure I put the proper amount of sunscreen on them to protect them.

I refuse to cover them up with foundation or spray tan. Is that so wrong?

KSUViolet06 02-19-2009 12:05 AM

*What's with some of the rhinestones and lacing on those dresses? They're crazy. It's like someone took the hot glue gun and just went nuts with it.

*The way that lady yells at her son makes me want to scream.

*Funny you mention the hair color thing, one of the judges had a question as to whether the blonde little girl's hair color was real or not.

*I love how the MOM is crying about not making the top 5, but the daughter is not.

Ugh I saw that! I guess you know who's more invested in those pageants. The poor little girls talking about how she's just doing it to have fun, and if she isn't having fun she'll stop. That's the attitude the mom should have as well.

srmom 02-19-2009 06:33 PM

Okay, I have to admit I've been watching the tiara one. What about the creepy guy whose baby (like infant) is doing the pageants and he's the one all into it. The wife seems to just kind of be going along with it because it makes him happy.

What can an infant possibly be getting out of this? It is ALL for the parents! They are nuts!!

KSUViolet06 02-25-2009 11:41 PM

*What is up with the DADS being so involved in their daughter's pageants? I can see going and being supportive, but what's up with daddies designing outfits and coaching them? I dunno, I just think it's weird.

*The one girls' dad has that typical Florida Armani Exchange wearing douche bag look to him, so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. Mom appears to have a chest tat also. Classy.

*Maybe I'm old fashioned, but whenever a 5 year old is wearing a swimsuit, I think it needs to be a one-piece.

*That one little girl (Katelyn) was being sooo bratty, but I think part of it is just because she didn't want to DO the pageant.

*Mom yelling about the signs and making her cry was so stupid. Then when she cries, she says "You'll ruin your make-up."

*The other little girl (Jane) is so cute and normal. Like, she behaves like a normal 5 year old, not some sort of pageant robot. She seems to genuinely like doing pageants on some level.

*I love how the director guy is like, "This isn't about what Jane wants to wear!" Well, what IS it about? Oh that's right, it's about the grown-ups. lol.

When my now 22 year old daughter was 9 months old she and I moved to Albuquerque ahead of the moving van and my now ex. She and I were staying in a hotel that was hosting the "Little Miss Cinderella" pageant. I was going nuts seeing all these little kids dressed up as sluts. Daughter and I were downstairs having dinner one evening. I took off her playsuit and had her in the high chair only in her diaper since the only thing she would eat was spaghetti squash and I knew she would wear most of it. There was another child the same age as mine who was dressed in a $200 dress and dad had her wrapped tight in a blanket and was trying to feed her and keep her dress clean (it was only about 95 that day in desert heat). As I was carrying this dirty spaghetti colored child out of the restaurant, a lady stopped and told me she wanted to thank me, when I asked why, she said that I had the only child in the restaurant who was allowed to be a child. Turns out she was the head judge's wife.

nikki1920 02-26-2009 12:03 PM

^^^ and there you have it!

phisiglindsey 02-26-2009 12:30 PM

I watch them both, and the sad thing is that most of the moms say their daughters really want to do the pageants, yet I can't imagine some of those little girls going to the mom and saying put me in a pageant so I can win thousands of dollars. I've seen some pageants where 5 year olds win a car. It's just absolutely ridiculous. For those children's sake, I hope their parents are saving that money for a good college education.

But I really just love the parents who cry and cry because their child didn't win, yet the child is like whatever. More power to those little girls.

It's the same way with little league sports! The boys are all about the post game snacks! It's the parents who care about the outcome of the game!! LOL

Oh exactly. I grew up in a baseball (my brother) and cheerleading family. Sometimes I had to be like "Mom, I lost, you didn't!"

Honeykiss1974 02-26-2009 05:30 PM

I did pageants as a child but nothing hardcore like these!
I hate to see that this is what has become of pageants for little girls though. :(

I kept forgetting to come to this thread and post on this episode, but I <3 Jayne. She was adorable. I loved how she got off the stage from interview and was like "this is like a miracle!" And then went on to say how she thinks she can do really well, maybe even win that pageant. The joy in her face was priceless....if i was her mom I probably would have cried! lol.

The motivation? A desire to pimp out their daughters for some sick ego trip.

My friend does. :)

I caught preview for one of these shows and some mom was shaving her 7 yr old daughter's legs...WHAT??

Exactly

My thing is pageants should be illegal for anyone between the ages of birth through 15. After 15, fine. I've watched both shows they are generally the same thing. And they both suck for all the reasons everyone has mentioned.

Honeykiss1974 03-02-2009 02:05 PM

I just watched the marathon this weekend of LMP and yeah, some of the moms and "Will" (that's my new name for the dad in Miami) are a little, umm INTENSE. And I was totally appalled and grossed out at the bikinis that little Katelyn was wearing!!!! That made me want to barf. I wanted to reach through that screen and biatch slap both mom and dad (who just LOVED them on her).

I love BrandiJean. After she didn't make it into the top five, she was just like "oh well" while her mom was devastated. Mom is definitely a little tooooo invested in this.

And for whatever reason, I love Micheal (the pageant promoter). :p I think he had me when he told one mom that he doesn't take direction from a 5 year old (she was wanting to change her routine). lol

ETA:On another note, the judge from South Africa -I think her name is Nyesha(?) - but anyway she SERIOUSLY needs a better weave STAT!!!

She didn't wanna change her routine, she just nixed the costume change that guy wanted. I dislike Michael. Seriously, a chimney sweep? How does that correlate to Yankee Doodle? I think Jayne did just fine without the dumb chimney sweep idea. I don't think the judges would have got it.

Honeykiss1974 03-02-2009 05:21 PM

haha - I hear ya, but from what I've seen in "wow wear", I think if you keep it simple, you lose points. Who knows... :p

This show may actually make it to my DVR list though.

KSUViolet06 03-04-2009 11:27 PM

Shelby's mom says they don't have alot of money and are kind of struggling a bit.

I just wanted to scream at the TV: "IF YOU DON'T HAVE ALOT OF MONEY, WHY ARE YOU DOING PAGEANTS?"

Priorities, anyone? From the looks of things (their jobs, their house, etc), their $ could be going elsewhere.

I do like that Shelby is natural-ish, but I dunno if that's a choice or just a lack of funds.

I think Hadley was cute though, I love that she says "I dunno" to the interview question.

Also: Once again, if a kid is going to be in a swimsuit, it needs to be one piece. Not a bikini. And defintely not a bikini with BOYS holding her surfboard.

That Ms. South Africa Whoever lady (judge) looks like she used to be a man.

And does anyone notice that while the kids are all glam and stuff, the moms are typically NOT THAT pretty?

Shelby's mom = another example of the fact that the parents are more into this than the kids are. I feel like half the kids wouldn't even know they didn't do well if their mom didn't make such a HUGE deal out of it.

srmom 03-05-2009 10:49 AM

Did y'all see the toddlers and tiaras the other night where that little girl who won the
"ultimate prize" or whatever was the biggest BRAT I've ever heard???

It was hilarious. Her mom kept saying how "her personality comes out on stage" and that's why she's so successful at pageants, and then they cut to her yelling "SHUT UP!" at the top of her lungs to her FATHER!!! He just kind of rolls his eyes and ignores it.

Then at the end of the show, after she's won the whole shibang, when they are being interviewed, she starts fake snoring and when her dad tries to get her to respond, she does the "Tell it to the hand" gesture at him...

OMG - great personallity on that one!! I wonder if future judges will take that into account before they award her the "Miss Congeniality" award!!!

ajuhdg 03-06-2009 11:19 AM

I record these, so my daughter and I can watch them. I'll admit, she's done a few pageants. We don't do glitz at all...no make-up, no fake hair or teeth. She did her first national last year and got 3rd, and she was thrilled because she one a huge teddy bear. Anway, she loves to watch these shows. She loves pink and sparkles. The moms are nuts, and put way to much expectation on the kids. We had a pageant last year, and my daughter wouldn't let me put her down to go on stage. When she was done, I asked if she wanted to do it anymore, she said no, and we didn't go back the next day to finish. I'm just not going to be THAT mom. It takes the fun out for both of us. Of course, now she's back in the mood to do them after watching the shows, but what do you expect from a 3-year-old?

jitterbug13 03-09-2009 04:29 PM

Tyra is featuring people from Toddlers and Tiaras on her show this week (I think it's Friday).

LeslieAGD 03-10-2009 04:01 PM

Is T&T already over, or is it just on break for a few weeks?

KSUViolet06 03-12-2009 01:36 AM

Why are these families from Florida?

Also, the idea of doing a pageant with my mom scares me.
