Twitter

Does anybody on here use Twitter? It's not entertaining me because I don't have enough people to follow.

Unregistered- 02-14-2009 10:22 PM

I Twitter, and rely on it on a daily basis. I have it set up that my Twitter updates automatically update my Facebook status. Love love love Twitter.

I follow a bunch of local journalists, and I get the news faster than logging on to the newspaper website, lol. It came in handy when we had the big blackout last December!

You can follow me!

AOIIalum 02-14-2009 11:16 PM

Same here. I didn't think I'd be into it but am hooked. Very phone friendly app too! My username is different so PM if you want to follow me there.

epchick 02-14-2009 11:39 PM

What is Twitter? I don't understand it. Is it part of Facebook or something?

It's a site that allows users to post status updates like Facebook, but you're limited to 140 characters. It's become quite the trendy social networking site.

A bunch of local Tweeters had the Hawaii Twisteval last Thursday, an event that raised $6,000 for charity.

Lots of celebrities have joined the Twitter bandwagon as well -- John Mayer, Demi Moore, and Ashton Kutcher are by far my favorite celeb Tweeters.

KatieKate1244 02-14-2009 11:48 PM

The only people I really follow on Twitter are journalists: David Gregory, Ana Marie Cox, etc. I know very few people on there. Nobody in my area seems to be very into it, but I like it.

So it's a site of just status updates? Or can you post other things as well?

I don't know anyone on Twitter (although my sorority just started on Twitter). :(

People post links as well, but they tend to use tools that make the URL shorter, like tinyurl.com, since it's limited to 140 characters.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twitter

It's a big help during rush hour. People shouldn't be Tweeting while they drive, obviously, but I know which roads to avoid when I'm going home because of Twitter, lol.

Like AOIIAlum said, they've got really good phone apps.

Unregistered- 02-15-2009 12:06 AM

Dr. Andy the Bachelor's in Waikiki watching the sunset with Tessa! Are they back together or aren't they? Read it all on Twitter!

agzg 02-15-2009 12:29 AM

I use twitteriffic on my iPod Touch and I love it because if I'm somewhere that has wifi, or even if I don't feel like getting up from the couch, I can read people's status updates and tweet while maintaining my laziness.

Sometimes I tweet about live-in while he's in the same room. He has twitterberry for his blackberry, too, so he gets them pretty quick. The Super Bowl was nuts.

KSUViolet06 02-15-2009 12:50 AM

I love Twitter. I keep up on alot of my sisters who live out of the area on it.

tld221 02-15-2009 11:07 AM

Question: how do I find you guys on Twitter? And is there a bb app?

agzg 02-15-2009 11:55 AM

The app for blackberry is called twitterberry. You can pm people and ask them for their usernames. Or they can pm you.

BetteDavisEyes 02-15-2009 12:13 PM

I recently joined but only have 11 people to follow so far. :p

tld221 02-16-2009 12:57 AM

So, I just downloaded Twitterberry, but have no one to follow but rick sanchez from CNN, which is how I heard about it first. Who am I going to follow? PM me!

phisiglindsey 02-16-2009 12:58 AM

I use Twitter daily, and was SOOO excited to learn about Twitterberry! Now I tweet like it's going out of style! :)

PinkRose1098 02-16-2009 10:40 PM

Yes and it's sucking me in!

ISUKappa 02-20-2009 06:48 PM

I just signed up with twitter this week and it's becoming addictive!

Kappamd 02-22-2009 02:18 AM

Ok, I just signed up for Twitter. How do you set it so that it updates your facebook status? I've been trying to figure it out with no luck.

Edit: One more question......AlphaGam, what ap do you use for your Ipod Touch?

Go to your Facebook account and search for the Twitter app. Add it.

twitterrific - free version has the occasional ad, but I wasn't paying $10 for the full version.

ISUKappa is right - I use the free twitteriffic too - it only shows an ad every fifty tweets or so.

Kappamd 02-22-2009 01:54 PM

Thanks....I think I'm going to try Twitterfon though. Seems easier to use so far.

KSigkid 02-22-2009 02:39 PM

Just signed up...now I'm trying to get the twitterberry thing to work.

Since you posted this I decided to try it.

What I don't like: It shows fewer tweets.

What I do like: I can access my friend's timelines which shows some of their older tweets. The user interface is more like e-mail which I like a lot.

I'll keep with it for a couple of weeks and if I don't like it I'll switch back to twitterriffic. Since they're both free it's not going to do any harm to switch back and forth if I feel like it.

texas*princess 02-22-2009 06:56 PM

I heart twitter :)

AGDee 02-22-2009 07:05 PM

I joined Twitter a couple weeks ago and decided that I better not get into it because I already have enough going on online between GC and my ever increasing contacts with old friends on Facebook!

VandalSquirrel 03-12-2009 09:56 PM

I've been encouraged to tweet. We're considering having one for my office, which I find hysterical. If you want to swap user names, PM me.

ISUKappa 03-12-2009 10:38 PM

I'm same as LJ.

LucyKKG 03-12-2009 11:13 PM

Ok, I caved and got one. PM if you want my user name.

Question: what are ya'll's thoughts as far as follow etiquette goes? I have about 150 followers. I'll go out on a limb and say I know maybe 35-45 of them personally. If someone random starts following me (not the robots, those usually get blocked) do I have to follow them back, at least for a bit? Some people just aren't interesting, and it takes too long to read everything.

To clarify: I don't mean the people trying to market things; I don't block them but certainly don't follow back. I mean the regular, average joe, you-and-me tweeter.

You don't have to follow everyone who follows you.

My tweets are protected anyway, so nobody can follow me unless I approve them, and I don't usually approve people I don't know.

Ditto. I have mine set to private, too, and I only allow people to follow me that I already follow. But I also follow people like Kevin Rose, Dr. Drew, LeVar Burton that just have too many followers to follow me back.

Many of the Joe Schmoes who add you but don't know you are just following you so that you add them, anyway. They want to get their follower count up.

There's this local chick that has 50,000 followers. She's just some average middle aged lady who's friends with a bunch of local online pioneers. I decided to follow her one day to see what the hype was about...and I wasn't impressed. I realized she was just a follower whore.

My 8th grade teacher found me one day. I debated letting him view my posts, but I decided against it. That was just too creepy.

I'll add somebody if I think he/she's interesting or if we have mutual friends. I follow several of you on GC as well. I'm fine with my less than 100 followers!

I think I have 12 followers - I'm selective LOL

KSUViolet06 03-16-2009 01:28 AM

Right now I have 14, which is fine.

I mostly have Twitter to keep up with sorority sisters/friends that have moved out of the area. I like to know what they're up to.

ASTalumna06 03-16-2009 02:01 AM

I don't understand Twitter.

Are you just updating people on random stuff that you do throughout the day? I guess I just don't understand this obsession with telling everyone about all of the happenings in my life. It's bad enough that Facebook notifies people when I add a new friend, or write on someone's wall. Now I'm updating people when I'm watching a football game? Or going out for drinks? Or eating?

I'm confused.

Twitter lets people know what you're doing.

If you don't feel comfortable letting people know what you do, don't sign up for it. As I said previously, it saved my ass last December when we had an island-wide blackout. It's also a good source of roads to avoid when dealing with rush hour traffic.

You're not just letting people know what you'd doing. Sometimes people post breaking news. Or links to news worth reading. My friend even sold Girl Scout cookies for his daughter on Twitter. It's become the 3rd largest social networking site online -- only behind #1 Facebook and #2 Myspace.

I like reading celeb and lawmaker tweets, especially. Hearing from Ryan Seacrest that he was about to go on live with the American Idol results show and he hadn't peed since lunch was quite entertaining to read. :)

DaemonSeid 03-16-2009 03:03 PM

Facebook isn't enough?

Siiigh....maybe I will try it...I don't know.

ETA: Why does twitter sound like another instant messenger software?

I don't really see it as an instant messenger. It's more like blogging, except in 140 characters or less.
