Greek- the TV show
ABC family is about to walk into the 4th chapter of the TV series "GREEK"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0976014/ "Freshman Rusty arrives at college and decides he no longer wants to be the boring geek from high school. Now he must deal with his sister, sorority girl Casey, who denies his existence, Evan, his sister's boyfriend who denied him a bid to his fraternity because he told Casey about his infidelity, Dale his uptight roommate who thinks Greeks are only about drinking and fornication, and Calvin and his new friend who is in Evan's fraternity and having trouble dealing with his homosexuality." -IMDB plot summary Do you watch it? Do you feel is a proper picture of Greek life. The show touches on many subjects that any college student can relate: Relationships, cheating, credit card debt, pressure to lose virginity, drinking, drugs. Except this show is ABOUT Greek life, and it is filmed in 3 primary fictional houses. ZBZ sorority, Omega Chi - the #1 fraternity on campus, sweater vest and trust fund men, and Kappa Tau Gamma - party boys, slackers, the like. You hear about others like the slut sorority (Tri-pi) and the nerdy Fraternity - Phi Chi Psi (or something like that) Anyway- Because this show revolves around the family of Greek life, it talks about hazing, though no one is what one would severely hazed, (beaten, forced to drink, forced to break laws) hazing is involved, KT pledge Rusty has to serve his brothers drinks in a dress and blond wig. and do his brothers errands all during the pledge process.... which in the show is a school year long. The show also deals with the issue of a gay pledge, who - though is legacy - he dropps out of pledging because his soon to be brothers felt betrayed and lied to, and he feels it wasn't their business if he was gay (he did not let them know he was homosexual until ZBZ Ashlee let it slip). Do you feel this show is a risk management issue? Would you be offended if someone though of your Sorority/fraternity in this light? Do you feel this is accurate in the fact that, just like any organizations, issues in leadership arise, and nationals has to step in, (as seen in the ZBZ house where the orig pres wants to hide an issue from nationals and gets removed from her presidency) How does this show put greek life in a bad light? Or does is create an accurate picture that could almost be helpful in the sense that college is college and people mature and grow and come across a lot of issues whether or not your in a greek house. Please discuss. |
The show has been discussed in a couple of different threads. Personally, from the little I've seen, I don't think it necessarily puts Greeks in a bad light. And, considering the upswing in women joining the Greek system, I've wondered if the show hasn't actually helped them decide to join.

yes, but if you look at my original question, I'm talking about this effects how greek life is looked at in terms of risk management, Do people at your school, watch this show, and then look down at you? or do you like the way the show depicts greek life. Also, many cast and crew members were IN greek life in college.

AlphaXi's first link is to a 44 page thread about the show. Your answer is probably in there already.

It's fiction and serves only to entertain.

It's as realistic a portrayal as "ER" is to Emergency Rooms, "90210" is to American high schools, and "Desperate Housewives" is to suburban homemakers.
The stories may be rooted in actuality, but they are often dramatized, exaggerated and resolved in 60 minutes or less. It wouldn't be any fun to watch a bunch of fraternity men and sorority women doing study hours at the library or setting up chairs for a meeting. So the writers focus on packing as much "excitement" and sensationalism as possible into each episode. Do you not understand what ENTERTAINMENT is? |

McDreamy or McSteamy? |

I'll have to plead the fifth on McDreamy v. McSteamy. MrZTA72 was a pretty serious surgical resident. I, then, transferred to work in the OR, and the rest is history and happened probably before most of you GCers were born, hahaha. |
whaaaat is your deal
GREEK is an awesome show, a TV show, entertainment, sensationalism, guilty-pleasure heaven. If people are dumb enough to watch the show and think that every single Greek organization in the country is like ZBZ or Kappa Tau, then they are PLAIN STUPID.
I would actually like to be like ZBZ because then we could have parties and have fun. I like doing all the community service and philanthropy stuff, but I would LOVE to be able to cut loose once in a while without boring over-dedicated sisters complaining about how it tarnishes our image. I joined DPhiE because we didn't get hazed AT ALL and I found 5 girls who like to have fun as well as do well in school. I didn't realize that we could never have fun rush parties and that we are paranoid about Nationals finding out if a sister had a Cosmo at a sisterhood dinner. Again, if people think we are like the ZBZs I would be HAPPY! :D |

You need to step out of the TV matrix. |
That reads like a 2nd grade writing assignment.
"I like the tv show Greek. When I grow up, I want to be in the sorority on Greek. People think the show is bad but I think it's good. I wish real life was like Greek because then we could have parties and have fun." |

You're right, I don't know a lot about alpha gam, but I know that my sister is stressed because of the things she has to do to be initiated. And okay, I like the show Greek, and I think that once in a while it would be cool if we could do silly things like have a party. But is it really necessary to cut me down and say that I write like a 2nd grader? I like Greek not because of its portrayal of Greek Life but because it's a fun guilty pleasure. Do I REALLY want to be like ZBZs, with Franny and Evan and Casey and drama? Um, no. But it would be kinda cool to have a reputation as smart, classy, but fun girls. |

It is not hazing; calling it hazing is crapola. Period. |
