Where would you like to see Kappa Delta colonize/recolonize?

I know that I stole this from other chapters' forums...But I thought it would be an interesting conversation for the KDs! Plus....I would love to see more interaction on our topics...I feel like there hasn't been much activity recently! :)

Shellfish 02-11-2009 05:42 PM

You would think that I'd say my alma mater--I'm from a chapter that was closed. But there are a few good reasons why I accept that it wouldn't be such a great idea. For one, another chapter has opened in the area, and I know that KD likes to have good local alumna support for chapters, so best that this newer chapter be the focus around here.

The other is that I think KD is too good for my school. There was a time when my chapter could have just offered bids on the basis of looks, but they didn't want that. They were strongly antihazing at a school where it's probably more of a problem than is commonly known. Other chapters at this school have frequently been the subject of disciplinary investigations, and these same groups are the ones who always make quota. On the other hand, a sorority that after KD left had a "nice girl" image and that won the outstanding sorority award a couple of years running also faced declining numbers and folded. Hell, a member of one chapter that was supposed to be suspended by the university and "not recognized" by their national won the Panhel presidency during the suspension, and it doesn't seem like anyone batted an eyelash.

So, now that I've got that off my chest...my choice is West Virginia University. It saddens me that a long-lived chapter there had to close, although there was a good reason. A longtime friend of my family had been in a fraternity there, and he mentioned that the KDs were their neighbors, which was pretty cool to learn.

Shellfish, your post makes me laugh, because when I was reading your post for some reason I thought of WVU. (Though the way the WVU chapter closed and the culture of the chapter were different than you described).

I think WVU is way too much of a risk management nightmare. I'd be scared to see a chapter recolonize there. There's not just drinking problems, but drugs as well.

I'd like to see another KD chapter in my area (Pittsburgh) or the surrounding area. There used to be a few more aside from Pitt, but most of them closed. Don't know if we have the alumnae support- though we finally have a full CAB at Pitt. Heck, I'd be willing to do double-duty on CABs.

I'd also like to see chapters at more academically pretigious universities - recolonizing at U Penn, or even at a school like Carnegie Mellon.

KD had Bid Day yesterday at the University of North Texas for the recolonization of the Gamma Beta Chapter. Not for sure of the exact number. I think 45 or so and I believe they are hoping to COB 5 or 6 more. The girls are precious and seem very happy to be KD's.

KDAngel 02-16-2009 02:32 PM

I'd love to see KD come back to GW in DC. We have a ton of alumnae support here and lots of KDs in the area to help get things moving. Last year we came so close to getting the chapter back, but for it didn't happen.

I also think KD would be good for American University. Based off the chapters already there, we have something different to offer.

And I agree with Dani -- I'd LOVE to see KD come to see more chapters are more prestigious universities. :)

Katmandu 03-03-2009 09:09 PM

I would love to see KD back on the University of Oklahoma campus.

Gamma Theta closed after I graduated from Oklahoma State. One of my good friends in our chapter at OSU was a Jr. transfer from OU, and one of my HS friends pledged KD at OU while I was pledging at OSU. It would be nice to be at both flagship universities in the old home state.

Shellfish 05-05-2009 02:40 PM

I've been doing a little more thinking about this, and my new answer is California. Anyplace in California. Just look at the chapter lists some sororities have in that thread of Irishpipes'. Holy cow.

It does make me feel a little better to see that some other similarly sized sororities are in the same situation, and some of the groups that are strong in California have fewer chapters in KD's base, the southeast.

Edit to add that I see we're presenting at Dartmouth next week. Fingers crossed.

WCsweet<3 05-05-2009 05:31 PM

I was thinking the same thing Shellfish. When I joined my chapter, I was told that we were a huge sorority in the South and that there were not many chapters on the West Coast. I want to see more out here.

Hmmm if Dartmouth goes through, maybe I can see the first initiation!

swedishkd87 06-01-2009 09:33 AM

I was so excited to hear about KD at Dartmouth! I would love to see KD at Boston University. I'll be attending BU for graduate school in the fall and it would be fantastic to have a chapter there. It would be great to see a few more KD chapters in the Northeast.

Shellfish 06-03-2009 09:59 AM

I doubt that KD would go to BU, because we have a new chapter at Northeastern, which would require local alumna support. I don't know if there's enough in Boston to go around, but with new chapters in New England, who knows what it'll be like in a few years?

This question made me wonder: What KD chapters are pretty close geographically? I reckon the closest must be at Memphis and Rhodes, and some others would be Maryland and Towson and Bowling Green and Toledo. In the past, there were UCLA and Loyola Marymount, and it still amazes me that there were two within a few miles (I think) for a long time at Westminster and Slippery Rock.

ta kala 06-03-2009 02:41 PM

Washington State & University of Idaho are about 10 miles from each other. :) I visited both last year. The campuses are so different though, you would never guess how close they are!

Westminster and Slippery Rock are many miles apart as far as what the campuses are like, though.

Katmandu 06-05-2009 09:10 PM

SW Ohio is pretty saturated, and it can be a stretch sometimes for alumni support.

University of Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky University are just across the river from each other--ten miles or so? Add in Miami of Ohio in Oxford, Wittenberg in Springfield and Wright State in suburban Dayton. 5 chapters within 45 miles or so.

Shellfish 12-15-2009 03:15 PM

I think we ought to try for Loyola of Chicago since it's open now. We have a ton of alumnae chapters in the Chicago area, so there could be enough support for both Northwestern and a new chapter, unless some of them also support Beloit and Ripon.

Just interested 12-15-2009 11:56 PM

That really sounds like a perfect school for us. Just from the little I know. Let's keep our fingers crossed we are considered.

Shellfish 03-31-2010 09:43 AM

Paging swedishkd87! I see you got your wish re BU.

swedishkd87 04-16-2010 02:03 PM

Yes! I was so excited when I found out!

kappadee 05-02-2010 01:46 AM

umm id love to see one at the university of Michigan because my sister is going there and id love her to be a sister :) lol i know thats silly but oh well

KDclassy602 06-23-2011 11:26 PM

I'm a KD at Ball State in IN and I would love to see a chapter opened at Purdue. They have one of the most diverse greek lifes in the country and I would love to see us represented in that.

aj12291 07-14-2011 07:44 PM

Anything in the Northeast (especially Massachusetts...) I go to school in southwest Ohio, but I'd love to see our letters around more when I come home for breaks :)

Lady Pi 07-14-2011 09:11 PM

Sorry for crashing, but KD is colonizing at UNC Charlotte this fall!

utkdce 10-03-2011 02:07 PM

I would love to see Kappa Delta increase its presence in Texas...

Texas Christian University
Fort Worth, TX
August 14-19, 2011
Quota=64
Campus Total=150
Quota last year=55
***Open for Extension***

Any chance of KD recolonizing at TCU?

Yes, as KSUViolet noted, the groups to present have already been chosen. It sounds like KD didn't feel this was the right time to try to come back. As someone who was on campus when they closed, I do hope that it works for them to return at some point. They have great, loyal alumnae in the area.

All four groups invited have now presented. Per a campus newspaper article, TCU will do a stacked colonization with one new group in Fall 2012 and a second in Fall 2014. Hopefully the announcement will come soon.

Shellfish 10-03-2011 10:42 PM

To be honest, I think that we probably did put in an application at TCU, but expansion works in mysterious ways.

Edit: That was just a guess on my part, but I was wrong.

Katmandu 10-17-2011 06:07 PM

I would love to see KD back at University of Oklahoma. We are at Okla State and U of Tulsa, both strong chapters, but not at any other Oklahoma college or university. Gamma Theta at OU closed in the 80s I think.

NUKaydee 10-18-2011 10:24 AM

I'm so excited that we're presenting at Bryant University, but I'm so sad that I can't go to the presentation. I really hope we have the opportunity to open another chapter in the northeast!

Just interested 10-20-2011 02:13 PM

I put this on another thread but we presented at Washington University in St. Louis and Purdue University this week. Would love to bat at least 500 and get at least one of those great schools. Both would be even better.

I would LOVE to see KD at WUSTL. There's good alumnae support in the area and the St. Louis University chapter is just up the street.

EDIT: The website for WUSTL panhellenic says that KD is presenting on 11/8/2011. Kappa Alpha Theta and Alpha Delta Pi are also presenting.

Just interested 10-21-2011 07:48 PM

Thanks, I was under the impression it had already happened.

DaffyKD 10-21-2011 10:57 PM

KD will be presenting at the University of San Diego on November 10.

I went to the law school at WUSTL and I live in the area. Would it be okay if I went to the presentation? Or would it be weird and annoying? I'd like to see it.

KDCat - I would be sure to get in touch with the St. Louis AC or the Alumnae NLT for MO (which is Division 7). They would be able to tell you how appropriate it would be for alumnae to attend this particular presentation (as expansion presentations are all different). However, it is WONDERFUL that you are so interested in learning more about the presentation! All Kappa Delta chapters need supportive alumnae in their areas, especially those who are willing to support new chapters as CAB, HC, and other support.

I contacted the sister organizing and she said that she can only bring a certain number of alumnae due to space reasons. We chatted a bit and she'll let me know.

Nationals sent around a volunteer form by email this week. I'm going to fill it out and turn it in.

KDCat 11-09-2011 12:06 PM

The colonization presentation at Washington University in St. Louis went very well last night. The presentation team did a great job. There were a lot of nodding heads in the Panhel audience. I think they really like our national philanthropies and I think they really liked the chapter development plan that was presented. We had a good number alums who were there and they reported a good amount of alum support (50 women have expressed interest in being on CAB.) About 20 ladies from St. Louis University attended and several women from the SLU CAB attended.

I was surprised by how long this colonization process is going to be. They're choosing a chapter now, but recruitment and colonization weekend won't be until Spring 2013. (WUSTL has deferred recruitment in January.)

Keep your fingers crossed!

One of the women who presented there is also presenting at USD. I don't know how common that is. She was a CDC who visited my chapter and also had been partnered with a woman from my chapter to colonize Boston University. Hopefully the presentation will go as well in San Diego!

KDCat - That is great news about the presentation! The KD Expansion Team has been busy these past few months!

KDCat 12-07-2011 11:03 PM

It's not confirmed yet, but a St. Louis alumna told me that KD will be colonizing at Washington University in St. Louis. WUSTL Panhel voted yesterday.
