Michael Phelps Busted by Photo

(CNN) -- Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps admitted to "regrettable" behavior Sunday and vowed it wouldn't happen again after a British newspaper published a photograph of the swimmer smoking a marijuana pipe.

"I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way," swimmer Michael Phelps said in a statement released Sunday.

"I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment," the record-setting American athlete said in a statement issued Sunday.

"I'm 23 years old, and despite the successes I have had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner that people have come to expect from me," Phelps said. "For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public -- it will not happen again."

Well, first time it was driving while under the influence, now it's smoking weed...I wonder what's next and if there will be any type of punishment from the IOC.

The Washington Post reported this morning that the IOC admonished Phelps but will not sanction him since Marijuana is illegal during competition only by their rules. The Post also questioned whether this will effect all of his endorsements.

Benzgirl 02-02-2009 09:37 AM

I'm sure he didn't inhale

nikki1920 02-02-2009 11:57 AM

I doubt it will effect his endorsements.

I don't know...some of these companies are extra-sensitive of their squeaky clean reputations. The usual period of time that an Olympic champion can capitalize on his/her success has already passed.

PM_Mama00 02-02-2009 12:37 PM

He went to school in Ann Arbor. I doubt this is the first and only time he's done it.

Hash Bash? I wonder if they still have that.

jojapeach 02-02-2009 02:11 PM

LOL @ Kevin. Nice code cracking. :P

I think Michael Phelps should ALWAYS wear a beard because it definitely improves his look. Well, he should shave during competition so he can move swiftly through the water, but away from the pool, he could be Grizzly Adams.

agzg 02-02-2009 02:28 PM

This might just be me but I just don't feel like it's that big a deal. I know he's supposed to be a role model now, but if you take away the Michael Phelps part of it he's just another 23 year old that had a picture taken of him hitting a bong.

KSigkid 02-02-2009 02:34 PM

This doesn't surprise me at all.

Me neither. He just got caught, is all.

DrPhil 02-02-2009 05:18 PM

He's ugly.

I've never smoked weed. I think it's silly that people on the radio today are debating whether marijuana should be legal. It's illegal. Get over it...unless we're going to have an all-out discussion of the law and why substances like tobacco are legal.

On that note, he got caught. He will pick his social circles more carefully now.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 02-02-2009 05:31 PM

I feel bad for him. He just wants to swim. Now he's caught up in all this publicity and his mistakes are front page news. Let's just let him be 23.

Co-sign! And I want to know who gave him the bong during Homecoming! :(

So being 23 means being above certain laws?

That's interesting.

I agree that this shouldn't receive too much attention. I think they should let the law handle it as it would any other person.

Yes. That is exactly what I meant.

Or did you mean the bottom line of my post? That would be better. He can be treated as any other 23 yo who broke the law.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 02-02-2009 05:51 PM

If I'd meant the bottom line of your post, I would have referenced it.

So you did mean that being 23 makes one above the law? That's unfortunate. I thought you were attempting sarcasm.

CutiePie2000 02-02-2009 06:10 PM

I personally don't think the pot-smoking is a big deal, but whatever.

Benzgirl 02-02-2009 06:35 PM

I don't think it will impact his endorsements. It will all blow over pretty quickly.

Look at Kate Moss. One day she was snorting a line, the next day she was representing all of the lines. Sure H&M dropped her but the major designer endorsements she picked up after rehab netted her some big accounts.

AGDee 02-02-2009 06:56 PM

He also had a DUI when he was 19 and that didn't appear to hurt his image or his endorsements.

jojapeach 02-02-2009 07:22 PM

Think about how many other celebrities of one sort of another have been caught with drugs or under the influence, and they're careers were just fine. I could see the uproar if he was caught smoking crack or taking steroids. It's just weed. He just shouldn't have been caught on film. I bet this thread will die in 1 week max.

I agree
They're saying it's because he's a role model for little kids...if they hadn't made this one picture public, no one would have known....

33girl 02-02-2009 08:19 PM

This had me rolling laughing. I can't stand this dude (but then I think the Olympics is a giant waste of money and resources in general). When you're making that much money for something that you really don't ever have to do again (unlike pro sports stars with endorsements) you should have enough of a brain in your head to not hang out with idiots and/or avoid doing illegal things.

At least when there's not a CAMERA around.

And it looks like this won't either: http://sports.yahoo.com/top/news?slu...v=ap&type=lgns .

He's sort of the "Teflon" athlete.

From what I've heard (from people who would know) the guy likes to have a good time. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it probably means he'll be in the headlines again at some point.

The "news" said that he had been partying everyday since the Olympics and that this may make him slow down a little.

Lol like I said, he went to Ann Arbor. It's not just for overly smart nerds and minorities. It's a pretty big party school.

I wonder if he just wants to be a normal college student (alumni?) and is tired of being the perfect one that everyone expects the world of. Yeah he's making a shit ton of money, but I can't imagine the pressure that gets put on him.

Unregistered- 02-03-2009 12:21 AM

I just started following him on Twitter.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 02-03-2009 08:09 AM

HAAA. That's awesome. Let us know what he tweets.

He should be a role model for Marion Jones.

Heh...

DaemonSeid 02-03-2009 06:29 PM

So much for the Teflon Athelete. SC weighing options on charging Phelps

JohnnyCash 02-03-2009 06:42 PM

Agreed. It's not for me, but if someone who just spent the last year (4 years, 10 years...) busting his ass wants to take a little break and have some fun, I don't see anything wrong with that.

DaemonSeid 02-03-2009 10:10 PM

I am surprised that no one noted that NOW we understand why he ate 12000 calories a day...the munchies are a real killer!
