Senator Collapses at Inauguration

It has been reported that either Senator Bird or Kennedy has collapsed, but CNN is receiving conflicting reports.

It was Kennedy I heard...details still forthcoming

scbelle 01-20-2009 03:51 PM

NBC is reporting it's Byrd.

Senusret I 01-20-2009 03:52 PM

It's Kennedy, Obama just said it on CNN

Benzgirl 01-20-2009 03:52 PM

Obama just mentioned Kennedy.

scbelle 01-20-2009 03:53 PM

And that's why media often needs to simma-down and take a second to check and double check. :p I hope Teddy's ok.

Yeah, I think they jumped to conclusions because Byrd was too frail/tired to stand when Obama entered the room.

DaemonSeid 01-20-2009 03:57 PM

Sounds like byrd did also

Well, the man is 197 years old. Brian Williams on NBC (incidentally the only channel I can get on AFN right now) just corrected the mistake.

I laughed out loud.

Now they are announcing that both Kennedy and Byrd collapsed. Kennedy's was a seizure.

DaemonSeid 01-20-2009 04:12 PM

Ok the media is pushing this a lil too much right now...NOBODY IN THE ROOM IS A DOC...and NOBODY HAS 100% info right now...dayum just go camp out of the hosptial!!

Benzgirl 01-20-2009 04:14 PM

CNN retraction. Byrd is ok. Kennedy was taken away in an ambulance.

AOII Angel 01-20-2009 04:21 PM

Hmmm...I wonder if Kennedy has recurrent tumor? They supposedly resected it all, but it's just a matter of time before it comes back. Pts like him rarely make it more than a year.

They had said originally that the prognosis was not great.

This is really sad - I have a ton of respect for Kennedy, in that he's been a great Senator for Massachusetts. He's worked really hard for the Commonwealth, and has been willing to work with Republicans to get legislation pushed through (unlike Kerry, who is unwilling to work with Republicans and doesn't do anything for Massachusetts).

Yeah, MSNBC claimed it was Byrd at first because he had left the lunch and wasn't in the room when everything with Kennedy happened.

They say it is a seizure that "went on for a while." Supposedly John Kerry's wife went to Senator Kennedy and tried to help out before he was taken away in a wheelchair.

Hopefully he's alright.

I completely agree...he has come a long way from his scandal ridden early years. My grandfather died of the same tumor but had a much worse outcome after surgery. He's actually been really lucky to have such a functional post-op period. Lets him get his affairs in order.

Yeah, from what I've read (and conversations I've had with medical people) it seems like he's really had a remarkable post-op period. If there have been any issues, they've done a really good job of keeping things quiet and private.

I'll admit that I wasn't Kennedy's biggest fan for a while. But, he does a great job working with Republicans and putting personal interests aside, he treats his staff extremely well (even while expecting a lot out of them), and he's worked incredibly hard for Massachusetts. I know the Commonwealth is praying for him, so they at least have one person fighting for them in the Senate.

Apparently, both Sens. Byrd and Kennedy have been checked out...

It was a "hiccup" that probably manifested itself as too much "to do" for today, given their health conditions.

That is difficult for some seniors to admit to that, especially when they are ill, however, at some point, we have to quickly notice when, too much is too much for them and let them "gently" know...

I know this after working years with many seniors in nursing care as a volunteer.

.

I agree. But I know he wanted to be there, and I'm so glad he got to see President Obama sworn in.
