And so it begins...

Well, Best of Luck to you!

Please let us know how it goes.

Benzgirl 01-15-2009 05:47 PM

Good luck tonight. Don't listen to the stereotypes and keep an open mind

Hi everybody! I have been SO excited about recruitment and reading all of YOUR stories and I am so happy that I finally get to share MINE! Rush starts tonight.

So let me start off by telling you about the sororities at my school. My school is pretty big, so not a large percentage of students are in sororities. It is definitely not necessary to be in a sorority to have a social life here, but if you're a certain type of girl who wants to do a certain type of thing (go to formals, become really close with a big group of girls) then they are pretty necessary. In all honestly, there are so many nerds at my school (sorry-it's true!) that it has been hard to find girls with whom I have a lot in common. So I have been wanting to join a sorority basically since I got here and have hardly been able to wait until second semester to start!

So there are eight sororities at my school. I'm going to name them after different sodas. I will tell you the sometimes brutal and extreme reps these sororities have at my school, which are definitely not based off of the girls I know in the sororities. Here they are:

Dr Pepper: blond, tall, skinny girls with big boobs; in years past known as the prettiest, girly girls, although people say last year's pledge class wasn't as good as usual; also the sorority with southerners
Diet Coke: the mysterious, high fashion girls from NYC, said to have had the best pledge class last year
Mountain Dew: known as a pretty good sorority with cool girls, has gotten a lot better and more popular in recent years; athletic, "fratty" girls with beer bellys who are slutty
Pepsi: Dr Pepper wannabes, boring, but nice and cute, "marriage material"
7 up: the Jewish sorority, some good girls, some bad, all united by the fact that they are Jewish
Root beer: not such a good sorority, known as energetic girls and wannabe sluts
Sprite: no description or reputation really, which says something itself, people don't even really know it exists
Orange soda: the worst sorority of them all. ugly, fat girls, probably going to lose their charter here soon

So those are the reputations that I know of each sorority. Since I've been interested in joining a sorority from the time I got to my school, I have cultivated a lot of knowledge about the ones at my school. I have talked to other PNMs, read all the reps of the sororities online, and am especially influenced by the guys at my school that I know (most of whom are older than me) who automatically say--"you're going to be in Dr Pepper, right?" Especially my boyfriend--all the girls he knows are in Dr Pepper and he completely does not understand why I wouldn't be in it. I spent winter break buying clothes, reading all about rush online, whitening my teeth, and before I came I had my hair and nails done.

I am all ready! And it's tonight!

I am really going to try to go in with an open mind regardless of what I've heard. Anyway, I'll tell you how it goes!

I usually don't do this, but QFP. It will be interesting to see how this PNM sees each chapter as she meets them, compared to the "common" stereotypes.

Note: Traditionally Jewish sororities don't always cut girls who aren't Jewish.

Shellfish 01-16-2009 10:44 AM

Hmmm. I think I know which school this is, but I'll keep my mouth shut. If I'm right, it'll be interesting to hear what the current chapters are like. Mine closed several years ago, and I was an alumna advisor for a while after graduation, during which time there were a lot of changes in the Panhellenic there.

ThetaDancer 01-16-2009 12:31 PM

Best of luck to you today, pnm!

What she said.

(alum of traditionally Jewish sorority here)

Good luck today and stay warm!

GammaPhi88 01-16-2009 03:41 PM

I can't tell you how many non-Jewish girls I know in the historically Jewish sororities.

hijack/

Is it just me, or have soda names become really popular code names lately?

Orange soda was next. I even kept an open mind going into this one although it has such a widely known, bad reputation. The decorations were very cute. However, the girls were honestly SO AWKWARD--it was horrible. I was doing the best I could to keep every conversation going and they were just standing there, often in silence. As I walked away, it made me nervous that I might never find a sorority where I really belong.

So, were Orange Soda ACTUALLY ugly and fat, or just awkward? I mean, I've seen some gorgeous girls that couldn't make conversation with a gun to their head.

hi everyone,

a family crisis has come up and i am going home for a few weeks. i might not even come back for the rest of the semester. therefore, i spoke to my px and i have to drop out of rush:(. thank you for all your support thus far. maybe next year?

icelandelf 01-18-2009 02:27 PM

sorry to hear that. I just got my laptop back and was catching up on threads. I would've pulled for Dr. Pepper myself.

Good luck with your family situation.

ETA: shame on me for believing you pnm12345. I hope Karma bites you in the butt for your bogus thread.

You actually believed her? She went through and "deleted" threads that called girls ugly and all of a sudden she reveals that she's dropping out of recruitment?

I think it's bogus, and she's finally realizing that what she's said could potentially bite her in the ass here, since people know what school she's at. My money's on she's still going through rush and she got a clue and decided to lay low.

Senusret I 01-18-2009 02:49 PM

I agree.

Shenanigans!

icelandelf 01-18-2009 02:53 PM

Ugh!!! I reread her initial posts again--OTW, you're right.

I'm not usually that gullible :o

I agree. And no one was around to QFP this morning. I bet those were some great posts.

indygphib 01-18-2009 03:13 PM

I jumped on the site this morning about 10 minutes too late, otherwise I would have loved to have done the QFP. I wanted to find out more about the "fat -n- uglies" - sooooo disappointed!

Senusret I 01-18-2009 03:17 PM

I just wanted to send a sincere shout out to ree-Xi for having the forethought to QFP the initial post.

Benzgirl QFP'ed the 2nd half of Open House. Either she or one of the mods must have deleted it.

The first girl at Pepsi (I believe it was Pepsi) was ugly. She had a few number ones and ranked the Jewish sorority #2.

Silly me, I forgot about subscribed threads!

Quote:

Sorry guess I've fallen behind a little! I'll tell you about the second round of open houses.
Anyway, second night:

Mountain Dew--Had ok convos with all the girls but it was kind of boring--they were all about classes and stuff, and the girls were kind of more awkward than I expected. One of the girls I talked to was someone I knew from high school, which I thought was probably not a good thing because we never really got along. I did like how this sorority seemed more laid-back, but it was kind of boring and it doesn't really stick out in my mind.

Sprite: Had really nice conversations about a lot more than classes and the basics. I saw a girl I knew from my high school, though, and she was really judging me--looking me up and down. I tired not to pay attention. I loved the last girl I talked to--she was really cute and grew up near me so we had a lot to talk about.

Pepsi: The first girl I talked to was ugly and had bad breath but the other girls I talked to were really cute. They just seem like they all really like each other and they're into sisterhood.

Dr Pepper: They seem like the most fun. They were dancing when we came in and gave us hot chocolate--a much needed relief from the cold! I can't really tell, but it seemed like they were rushing me really hard. I think maybe they are worried because their popularity is declining, but what do I know really. I got to sit on a couch which was great! The first girl was so nice. I often had two girls with me at a time. Once, a senior girl I know came over and joined the convo for awhile and then left. I looked up at one point and saw a girl I was just talking to pointing at me and saying something to one of her sisters. Seemed like a good sing then but I realized later it could mean anything. They also told me about some great features of their house. The last girl I talked to, however, seemed really distracted and not very interested in our conversation which made me worry. These were definitely the prettiest but also the most obviously judgmental girls I had encountered at any of the houses.

This was the unofficial rank I had in my head:
1. Dr Pepper
2. Diet Coke
3. Mountain Dew
4. Pepsi
5. Sprite
6. Root Beer
7. 7 Up
8. Orange Soda

Although now I realize that ranking was probably based mostly off of the stereotypes I had in my head, although I was really trying not to do that! However, it's so hard to tell what you think after a few brief conversations.

Afterward, we had to go back and rank our top 6, rank one as number 2, and rank one as number three.

This is what I did:
1. Dr Pepper
1. Diet Coke
1. Mountain Dew
1. Pepsi
1. Root Beer
1. Sprite
2. 7 Up
3. Orange Soda

One of the reasons I ranked the Jewish sorority as number 2 was because I thought they would cut me anyway because I'm not Jewish. However, after reading what you all said I feel dumb. I definitely need to put the reputations I already know about behind me and just completely go on how I feel talking to the girls.

I will tell you about the schedule I got in a post later today. We could get invited back to a maximum of 6 houses for the next round.

So this is what I get for not paying attention to recruitment threads, I miss out on all the fun stuff. This sucks especially since I think I know what school she's at.

Feel like sharing, under the circumstances?

Shellfish 01-20-2009 10:17 AM

Should I?

BetteDavisEyes 01-20-2009 12:28 PM

Please do reveal. She bit herself on the ass by being such a judgmental wretch about the GLO's and instead of using discretion, posted her ignorant remarks on a public website.

Shellfish 01-20-2009 12:39 PM

OK, my guess is the University of Pennsylvania. I can probably decipher about 5 of 8 of the code, but I don't know about the propriety of naming them, especially Orange Soda.

Fleur de Lis 01-20-2009 12:43 PM

Could also be Emory - the recruitment schedule and reputations fit there, as well.

Penn was my guess as well, especially since first round was split into 2 nights of 4 houses each. Just goes to show that people can be intellectually smart enough to get into an Ivy and not have a shred of common sense.

I have found that most people that are incredibly intelligent and book smart have NO common sense!

ree-Xi 01-20-2009 10:21 PM

I thought University of Penn as well.
