D, you going? Wear some kind of stuff where you can be easily ID'ed if you go... Like when you put stuff on the Mortar Board... :D

ADqtPiMel 01-12-2009 11:47 PM

I have to work (apparently there will be "news" that day, who knew?) but aside from that I plan on hiding away in my house for the entire week! I'm sure the inauguration will be amazing but I wouldn't be able to deal with the crowds and the cold.

Then make sure you tell us what you'll have on so we who have to see it on TV can see you.

My son, along with many other National Capital Region BSA and GSUSA Scouts, will be serving as an official Inauguration Volunteer. I am going nowhere near DC that day.

AGDee 01-13-2009 07:12 AM

I have a few co-workers who are traveling to DC for the Inauguration. Another has canceled her trip. The hotel where she made reservations contacted her and told her that they had changed their terms. In order for her to get the room at the rate she booked, she would have to extend her stay by a few days, making it cost prohibitive. When she read about the port-a-potty situation, it was the final straw since she was going to be taking two children with her. She didn't think they could handle the lack of available restrooms. The other two who are going have family in or near DC and are staying with them. They are very excited! We are trying to get them to wear something that we could easily identify.. like a rainbow wig or something, but they aren't going for it.

5 million people? I don't think there is any way to 'distinguish' anyonein that crowd...it will be like a virtual Where's Waldo if you are trying to find someone there...hehehe!!

AGDee 01-13-2009 09:24 AM

Hehe.. yeah, we know. We just like teasing about it.

The weather report for Tuesday is high of 37 and sunny in the afternoon. That sounds like heaven to me. Our predicted HIGH for Friday is 6. DC will be 30 degrees warmer than that! My co-workers will be wearing shorts :D

Believe me when I say I am already trying to map a strategy to get down there early enough to get a good spot.

Tell them to make a plan to stay toegther and have a strategy in case they get separated including loss of phone coverage.

Lil' Hannah 01-13-2009 02:08 PM

I was planning on going up until last week or so when the reality of dealing with the crowds and chaos set in. I've decided I'd rather use the day off for something else I have coming up, and I figure we'll probably be watching on TV in the office anyway.

I have a reverse commute out to the suburbs so I'm kind of interested to see how that's going to go.

nikki1920 01-13-2009 02:20 PM

I will not be attending. Traffic is bad enough with the locals, so to add out of towners into that will be pure T HELL. Nikki1920 will be at her crib watching the action on TV.

In the words of Karen Walker, "It's like trying to find a needle in a gay stack".

Maybe you should wear a mortar board with a rainbow wig.

....Booo!!!!

so the report ain't true that President-elect Obama had a spot right next to him for you in the Electric Slide line at the Playa's Inaugural ball? Now, why you wanna go and mess all that up? :)

AOII Angel 01-13-2009 03:27 PM

Please no one go! I want to get to work that day! BWI sucks on a regular day!

OneTimeSBX 01-13-2009 03:29 PM

i live in Richmond...and they are predicting traffic will be bad DOWN HERE, over and hour and a half away!!! heck, as far as im concerned i participated and did my part when i was at the polls to vote at 5am!!

i will, however, be keeping my 8 year old home from school so she can watch it...

rushnquick 01-13-2009 04:12 PM

My 11yr old daughter will be in attendance at the inauguration with a delegation of student ambassadors, and I will be home jealous as all heck!

Army Wife'79 01-13-2009 04:42 PM

We have military friends who work at the White House. I cannot even imagine how they will get to work that week.

jitterbug13 01-13-2009 05:23 PM

I'm going on a charted bus sponsored by one of the other DST chapters in the area. We're leaving 6 am Monday and are spending the night in Virginia. Hopefully, we'll be back in Charleston early Wednesday morning.

My father is going and (most likely) has a ticket. The room he got is $1700 and had to be reserved for several days.

ETA: 5,000th post!!!! :D :D

AKA_Monet 01-13-2009 07:19 PM

IDK? I know there will be some folks wish DAYUM, we could made some hella hella money on this piece...

Scarves
Ear muffs
Hot chocolate
Parking spaces, LOL...
Those little thermal hotties--hot packet things...
Usage of toilets/supplies--'cuz I heard they only ordered 5000 Honey Buckets (That's what they are called where I live)...
General fast food supplies--like hot dog stands, etc.

The federal gov't is off on the 19th and 20th. If your friends are key and essential, they may be sleeping at work on Monday night since all the VA-DC bridges are going to be shut down to POVs. The 2 Beltway bridges will remain open.

preciousjeni 01-17-2009 10:59 PM

I'll be there :D

Yeah, I know a lot of people who are sleeping at work on Monday night. My entire publication is supposed to report in since obviously there will be plenty of news on Inauguration day -- lots of people from Northern Virginia are just planning on taking air mattresses into the office and staying there. Two people are actually staying at my house since I live across the street from our office in West End.

Senusret I 01-18-2009 12:13 PM

^^^ West End as in near the old Columbia Hospital for Women (now condos), where Senusret I was born? :)

Yup, about 4 blocks from there!

Senusret I 01-18-2009 01:42 PM

That's hot.... I looooooooove the West End and I really wish I could afford to live there, lol

Yeah, we rent an apartment in one of the row houses. We are hoping to buy in West End eventually -- it's easy walking distance to both of our jobs, there's the library and fun outdoor pool and a zillion places to eat, walking distance to Dupont, Georgetown and downtown, etc. But since the house next door just sold for $1.5 million, I'm not optimistic, lol.

Even my S's OA Chapter is sleeping on the DC side on Monday night. They are fortunate enough to have an advisor whose employer was kind enough to let the boys tent at the office. In terms of prep, the Council HQ sent a major laundry list of things to bring and to do ahead of time. The OA Chapter won't actually know until Monday night where and when they are assigned.

Thetagirl218 01-18-2009 04:28 PM

One of my students is getting to go as part of a leadership program for high school students! I am so excited for him!!!

AGDee 01-18-2009 08:24 PM

While the Inauguration is always a big deal, I don't ever remember it feeling quite this special. The excitement is incredible. I haven't felt this optimistic about the direction of our country in a very long time.

KSUViolet06 01-18-2009 08:43 PM

I have sisters who are in DC right now. One has an aunt who owns an office building in the city, and that's where they'll be sleeping (on air mattresses).

I feel kind of ambivalent about the whole thing (not exactly a surprise since I didn't vote for or support the new President during the election)...I kind of wish I lived in DC, I'd go on vacation for a few days and let one of you Obama supporters rent my place!

I'm hiding out as well. My office is closed for the week because of it though, so I'm just enjoying the vacation.

You couldn't pay me to go in that crowd or the cold anyway. And despite its historic implications, I'd not want to go and celebrate Obama either. So I've gotten rid of my 4 tickets and am enjoying Netflix. :)

cheerfulgreek 01-19-2009 01:14 PM

I won't be able to see the inauguration in DC, but I'm staying home from class all day so I can watch it on tv.
