Miss American 2009
OK, so I was watching the reality showed that's paired with it this evening, and I was wondering if we have an Greeks in the running this year?
|
I just looked through the profiles and only two contestants listed Order of Omega, which don't you have to be greek to get into Order of Omega?
The contestants were Katie Lorenz-Illinois and Emily Cox-Kentucky. A bunch of ladies mentioned honor societies but none mentioned NPC sororities. |
I've been trying to find out which sorority Katie Lorenz was in. Interestingly, she's from Michigan and competed in the Miss Michigan pageant in 2005 and 2007. I can't find a reference to her sorority though.
Found a reference, looks like she's a Delta Gamma: http://www.e-yearbook.com/yearbooks/.../Page_307.html Looks like Emily Cox is an ADPi from UK Emily Cox, senior member of Beta Psi, was recently accepted into University of Kentucky Pharmacy School. She was also crowned Miss Bowling Green, and will compete for the title of Miss Kentucky this summer. http://www.ukadpi.com/page.php?page_id=12918 |
I watched the show last night, and although I have some reservations about it, I do hope it does some good in revitalizing the popularity and notoriety of being Miss America.
I tried explaining to my two daughters how we always watched the Miss America pageant on tv every year. The woman who won the crown was most definitely a celebrity in the US. And remember watching the talent portion? I loved it - and I was never a pageant girl. Seems like whenever Donald Trump took over Miss USA and made the whole thing about who was the sexiest (instead of who is most well rounded as well as pretty: a la Miss America) the Miss America pageant began to lose popularity. Also, we were also speculating if there were any Greeks participating. |
I turned it on for a few minutes loved Miss Kentucky blowing away the contestants with her chemical knowledge. I was cracking up at the reactions.
I turned it off when they were getting ready to break to commercial, and they showed the catty eye-ball rolling when they were eating. I do not like the reality show concept, but then this is entertainment! |
I believe Miss Oklahoma is an Alpha Phi and Miss Alabama is a Chi Omega. That's what it said on their pageant websites in their bios.
|
When did it go down the toilet? It really happened quickly...back in the day, almost everyone's family would be gathering to watch it and now hardly anyone knows when it's on. I remember when Miss Arkansas won in the mid sixties because my mother was so excited that she was calling the Hogs (oddly enough, that winner ended up being my brother's teacher several years later); I remember when a friend from Mississippi State won and when an Ole Miss Pi Phi won.
I've never been a fan of pageants but the Miss America Pageant was an American institution and then somebody (Trump?) crapped it up. Quote:

If this is the same show one of my sorority sisters was talking about, then one of the contestants is an Alpha Phi. Don't know the state, but her name is Kelsey.

Checked the official site and she is an ADPi, Beta Psi chapter. Well I know who I'm rooting for now. J/K. LOL. I think Katie Lorenz (IL) is absolutely adorable!! So I'm rooting for her too! |

I remember when i was a student at Arkansas Miss America 1995( Heather Whtestone) and my roommate were friends and i got to meet her when she was on campus for a speaking tour. Thats was pretty cool! I use to be one of the many who sat there and watched that pageant every year with my girlfriends growing up with our make shift crowns and spectors. I still watch it to this day when i can find which channel they shuffled it around too. |
I was really upset when they moved it from ABC, Atlantic City and the same weekend in September. My parents were always away that weekend and my Grandma and I would watch the parade through Atlantic City and then I would be allowed to stay up late and we would cheer for our favorites and of course Miss NJ.
To me Miss America had all the class, grace and the amazing history, and the changes (and the show) seem to make it as cheesy as any other reality tv show. |
Miss Montana is a Kappa.
|
This was such a big deal when I was growing up. Mom and I watched every pageant, but Miss America was always my favorite.
Since people are sharing Miss A. anecdotes, I'll mention that my mom used to work out occasionally with the 2004 Miss America. They had the same personal trainer. |
It's just not the same without gay guy from Ugly Betty. It just doesn't have the appeal it had last year.
|
Miss Georgia is a Phi Mu from UGA.
Miss Alaska is a Pi Beta Phi from University of Oklahoma. Miss Utah is a Kappa Delta from Utah State. Miss South Carolina is a Delta Delta Delta from William & Mary. |
Miss Missouri, Lacey Fitzgerald, is a Phi Mu from the Zeta Lambda Chapter.
|
Miss Tennessee is a Chi Omega from Union University.
|
Isn't the pageant over yet or is this now a complete reality show?

I almost hate to admit this, but with the pageant being the same weekend in September for all of those years, I used to think it was part of my birthday. I will definitely watch it, but it's not the same in January.
Here's an attempt at a Master List: Miss Alabama is Amanda Tappley - Chi Omega from Samford. Miss Alaska is Stephany Jeffers - Pi Beta Phi from University of Oklahoma. Miss Georgia is Chasity Hardman - Phi Mu from UGA. Miss Illinois is Katie Lorenz - Delta Gamma from U of Michigan & Loyala-Chicago. Miss Kentucky is Emily Cox - Alpha Delta Pi from U of Kentucky. Miss Missouri is Lacey Fitzgerald - Phi Mu from Northwest Missouri State University. Miss Montana is Jennifer Hepner - Kappa Kappa Gamma from U of Montana. Miss Oklahoma is Kelsey Cartwright - Alpha Phi from Oklahoma City University. Miss South Carolina is Anna Perry - Delta Delta Delta from William & Mary. Miss Tennessee is Ellen Carrington - Chi Omega from Union University. Miss Utah is Kayla Barclay - Kappa Delta from Utah State (the website says Brigham Young). |
That "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" guy was good but he completely oversang the song. I was surprised the judges didn't say anything about it.

Can any other KD's? |

If you mean the national KD site, that's another story. |
While I don't know of any Greek affiliation for Miss Virginia. She is the goalie for the Penn State Women's hockey team. She recently went one on one with one of our AHL players to raise money for the local children's hospital.

I was at the last Pageant held in Atlantic City. I haven't watched the show on TLC but I will probably watch the actual Pageant - I love seeing the evening gowns!
|
I got to meet some of the contestants as they were in Vegas last weekend. We ran into them en masse in the Fashion Show mall, and also wandering around town.
I sadly did not get to meet Mr. A C Slater :( |
Bumping for tonight's show! Are we all watching & commenting on this thread?
|
It's finally over tonight!

Anyone else vote last night?
|
I voted for South Caroline, Tennessee, and Hawaii. I'm having my annual Miss America party tonight, where we wear tiaras and make fun of the pageant. :P

As much as I should be supporting the gal representing my state, I just can't.
The girl's not even from Hawaii. She was Miss San Jose (or Santa Clara, can't remember) last year and hasn't even been here that long. A lot of the girls I supported from the prelim contests (including a girl from my HS alma mater) all came in so close in multiple attempts. and was in their last year of eligibility. In comes this transplant and takes the crown. Yes, I know. I'm bitter. |

Either way, Miss Hawaii (Nicole Fox) has made it to the top 15 |
I'm watching, but haven't been paying much attention. So far, the Top Fifteen I can remember are:
Miss Hawaii (sorry, OTW) Miss Kentucky (go ADPi!) Miss South Dakota (one of the gold sash winners) Miss District of Columbia Miss Florida Miss Tennessee (go ChiO!) Miss Georgia (go Phi Mu!) Miss Indiana Miss Alabama (go ChiO!) Miss Michigan Miss Delaware Miss Arkansas Miss Iowa Miss New York Miss California |
I think some of those women missed their calling as pole dancers!

I always thought there was some sort of rule like that, to keep girls who lived in bigger states (with more competition) from moving to a state or area with fewer contestants JUST to get a title (like if a girl were living in a big state like TX, but didn't want to compete there, she couldn't just move to North Dakota and compete in their state). |
