Greek Week
 

Sorry If there has been a post on this before, I did a quick search and found none.

I'm on our Greek Week committee this year and am looking for a few ideas before our first meeting in the spring. . Our themes for homecomming and Greek Week in the past few years have not been very exciting, so I was hoping for some theme ideas that you all have enjoyed.

Also, some event ideas would be nice. We change them every year. We do not have a Greek Sing that most Greek Weeks have, we do a Variety Show instead but our other events change. There is usually a sporting event of some sort. In the past we have done capture the flag, dodgeball, a fashion show...etc. Thought some fresh perspective would be nice.

We had a Homecoming Theme one year of "Magic to Do". There were a lot of interesting interpretations. Another was "A Cause for Celebration", but we did that in a summer Olympic year.

What does one do, when one is at said Greek Week?

The last time I participated in Greek Week, our school had these events:

- Whiffle ball tournament
- "Show your Greek pride" at a basketball game
- Lip Sync competition
- Fit and Fun Day (field day w/ Boys and Girls Club)
- Greek trivia

I haven't gone to one in a while, so I'm not sure what's "hot" right now.

My school does this awful thing, they put Greek Week during the few days the incoming freshmen come to campus. Not only are we busy "rushing" people and hosting guests, we have to decorate and put on skits as well. Without fail someone does a skit and horrifies an incoming student and their parents (yeah they bring their parents). Don't put Greek Week during any time there are midterms (Homecoming is always during fall midterms, WTF?) or other big campus events.

That being said, there's a philanthropy event, some skits, and house decorations, ummm yeah, that should do it.

You're right, I think there are some sporting activities as well, but I don't think football is one. I think they should do it in January here and have snow sculpture competitions, snowshoe softball and a contest of who can stick their tongue to a light pole the longest.

Oh and a "calendar girl for all seasons" pageant, since every fraternity without a partner ends up having brothers in drag in a skit. I like it better when they have facial hair and wear ugly dresses.

At my campus, we would also have different events every year. The two that always stayed the same were Greek Sing on Wednesday and chariot races on Friday. The chariot races were always entertaining. Some GLOs have really nice chariots.. others, not so much. I remember one year, the Sig Taus rolled an office chair back and forth as their chariot.

Other things we’ve done: football, volleyball, pie-eating, relay races, human bowling, sumo wrestling (with the big suits!), tug-of-war, scavenger hunt, etc.

And we would earn spirit points everyday at the events, also. You would earn a certain number of points for every poster you had, the percentage of your membership that was wearing letters, and there’d be extra bonus points for the percentage of members who were “all decked out”.

Some ideas that I find unique to the campus I advise are:

An "Order of Omega" chapter that is made up of a few members from each organization competing together as a group against the other sororities and fraternities during the week.

Have a Zeus and Hera competition (like a "Ms./Mr. University" pageant) to select the MC's for the week. The competition for Zeus and Hera is like a funny talent show/interview showcase. Winners would then attend and kick-off all competitions and make appearances at all events. Organizations "sponsoring" the winning contestants also get points toward the overall Greek week competitions.

We do most of the standard things other schools do; Greek Sing, a pageant with a competitor from each fraternity and sorority chapter (greek trivia, talent and toga competitions), a volleyball tournament, and Greek Olympics which have things like tug-of-war, pie eating, and relay races (which involve things like fraternity/sorority trivia, toga making, etc). They typically don't hold events on Monday, since that's when everyone has chapter, but they'll make that a letter day/spirit day. The volleyball competition doesn't seem to be as popular, but the other three events have really good turnouts, and a large part of the non-greek population comes out for Greek Sing.

Gotcha. We have all these things spread throughout the year.

for our Greek Week we have an all-Greek lip synch (which is HILARIOUS!!), an all-Greek step show (imagine AKA's stepping with Sig Tau's and AST's stepping with Alpha Phi Alpha's, also hilarious), Greek Olympics (chariot races, tug of war, keg toss, water relay, a foot race around the quad, three-legged race, golf chipping, and others), and there is a Greek God & Goddess penny drive. each sorority or fraternity puts pennies in its cup, other sororities and fraternities put dollars in the cups of people they don't want to win. a dollar bill takes away $1.00 worth of pennies in that jar. this competition is cuthroat!

this is also the week where all GLO's intramural points are added up.

At ISU, our Greek Week is held in the spring each year. there are about 16 pairings made up of a sorority, a large fraternity, and one or two small chapters. The pairings compete for points in Community Service, Lip Sync, Greek Olympics, Spirit (Banners, Storefront Window Painting, etc.) and Tournaments. The tournaments are held all week, the Spirit events are the first weekend, the Lip Sync first and second cuts are during the week and the finals are on Friday during Greek Getaway (A recruitment event hosted by the IFC/CPC). The Greek Olympics are held all day Saturday and consist of the following events:
Bed Race
Canoe Race
Skin-the-snake

and others...

Where do you go to school... if you don't mind my asking?

We have two pretty unique events for our Greek Week. To start the week we have "Shack-a-thon" where each group makes a wooden shack on the plaza and has to have a member in it at all times for the next two days collecting money from students on their way to class for whichever philanthropy the whole community supports for the week. Later in the week we have an aquatics night for relay races and synchronized swimming.

Our Greek Week is Intense to say the least. Everyone is SUPER competitive. No one is nice to each other, everyone ends up being upset and fighting. It's really not a positive week at all. I wish our greek week was like yalls, with fun games. This is how ours is.

Yesterday- Volleyball then Greek God/Goddess & Greek Sing & Step Team (most competitive of them all)
Today- Flag football
Tomorrow- Tug (which isn't your normal tug, it can go on for hours people down in divets made pulling, tug is also a super big deal) & Trivia
Monday- Can Serve A Thon & Basketball
Tuesday- Softball
Wed- Field Day
Thurs- Soccer

Wow, that kind of defeats the purpose of having Greek Week. Do your organizations get split up into teams, or is it a free-for-all?

No every sport/game/event is sorority on sorority and fraternity on fraternity. Sports (football,basketball..etc.) are played in a double elimination format. We are paired up with fraternities for field-day and greek sing though. Can-Serve-A-Thon we used to do alone but this year we were requested to ask a non-greek club to help us with. At the end of the week we have greek awards. Which sucks if you happen to not be in a athletic glo. Everytime a sorority wins something (individual award or collective) they stand up and do a cheer like ADPi does "I love my A-A-D-D-PI! I love em'" Phi Mu does something that is so fast you can't understand ZTA does Who Wears the Crown...and so on. Everyone sits and watches and then things proceed. Its crazy!

Wow. You can't really have Greek unity with a format like that. My school split up the organizations into 4 groups (we have about 32 organizations, so 8 GLOs per group). The competition is between the 4 groups rather than the 32. It gives students an opportunity to interact with groups they may not have known about.

You're completly right. Mind you we have 5 sororities and 5 fraternities (sororities run about 150 strong) (fraternities run around 30-50) It's crazy, and at the end of greek week it seems that people are more angry than happy with it. Unless you happen to win the whole she-bang, and in that case during recruitment (guys/girls) these groups spend half their time talking about how they won greek week. This year someone made a t-shirt that had all the glos on it and it said "Give Peace A Chance". I'm suprised that it isn't like this every school, I'm really embarrassed that ours is like this when everyone elses is about greek unity. People start practicing at our school as soon as rush is over in Aug. It's insane.

Is it only NPC and NIC that participate? Or are other organizations included in the 10?

NPHC is invited to attend and there are 5 of them (so grand total 15). They only have around 5-6 member each however, they normally choose not to participate because they don't have enough members to compete in the athletics on in greek sing and step team. They haven't shown up for either of those in years though.

We have Penny Wars every Greek Week. It's my favorite part of Greek Week. Each organization stands outside our student commons and collects pennies from students. Pennies are worth a point. But if someone puts any silver change or dollar bills then they are worth negative points. (A dime is worth -10.) We do it for the entire week, and in the end whichever organization wins gets all the money to donate to their philanthropy of choice. It's so much fun!

I really hate Greek Weeks that are all about "Greek Unity" and that kind of bullshit.

It's supposed to be competitive and for bragging rights. Competition doesn't bring people together- get over it.
