Woman swept away by a wave just before bf proposes
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081204/...proposal_death
A BRIDE-to-be was swept away by a wave before her boyfriend got the chance to ask her to marry him at a landmark called Proposal Rock. Scott Napper had taken his Filipina girlfriend Leafil Alforque, 22, to Proposal Rock near Neskowin Beach in Oregon to pop the question last Saturday. |
What is sad is that the wedding was going to be saturday and she was swept away a week before...

ETA: nvm I found this news article and it said that they had planned the wedding for the 6th, and he just wanted to "officially" propose. That's so sad about what happened. I can't imagine being him & watching her be swept away. |
This is really sad, especially to watch it happen right before his eyes.

I've spent a lot of time in that area due to family property on the coast, and it really can be quite dangerous if you don't know how to swim or have experience in the water. Even though it was just a three foot wave the undertow is quite strong, and especially this time of year the water is cold.

This story was on the news last night, and it struck my bf and I as odd. The couple met online, he said the first thing he ever bought her was her wedding dress, he was just proposing and yet the wedding was set for this weekend, and when the reporter asked him to describe her, he said she was really attractive, pretty, and some other superficial comment...he didn't seem choked up or emotional at all. Honestly, it struck us as a mail-order-bride situation.

Her family wasn't coming, that was obvious from the article. I thought it reeked of "mail order bride." |

Chances are, he already proposed. There's a lot of red tape to go through if you're coming from the Philippines and intending to stay here. If the American groom can show proof that a wedding's taking place soon, the more likely the Filipina bride can leave her country and stay here. |
Well regardless of the circumstances, that is just TRAGIC! That poor girl!
|
This seems highly suspicious and too coincidental for my taste.
|
:( that's so awful

There are a lot of twisted minds out there. There are a variety of scenarios and motivations -- money may not have been an obstacle. Point being ... again ... circumstances are too coincidental (and self-serving) for me. I hope there is an investigation and not just a blind acceptance of the surface 'facts'. |

Maybe she changed her mind. Maybe she decided that going back to the Philippines couldn't be worse than marrying this guy. Maybe she had met and fallen in love with a hot, young twenty-something Filipino guy. Maybe she rejected the middle-aged American man's proposal that day. Maybe they argued. Maybe he shoved her into the water in a fit of rage. Maybe I've been watching too much crime dramas on tv. :p Pika2001 suggested that a guy wouldn't spend all this money to bring a woman into the US just to drown her. I agree that it is unlikely that someone would go through all that trouble and expense just for the intent of killing her. But if it was a guy with anger issues and the girl had rejected/humiliated/disobeyed/angered him, he might kill the girl in the heat of the moment. Not saying this is what happened, but it could be a possibility. It could also be a possibility that it really was just an unfortunate accident. |
