Ummm....DST in Princess Anne, MD...UMES

Hello all. I went through the previous links looking for answers, I found one link from 2005 that specifically related to this chapter, but nothing since. I am not sure what happened, but the Nu Rho chapter at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore is no longer active. It is a city wide chapter that also includes Salisbury University. Between these two universities, there isn't a Delta to speak of. I have gone to the National website in order to ascertain whether or not the chapter is suspended which is what I was told while I attended UMES. The chapter is not listed as suspended on a National level nor is it suspended on a campus level. I have now graduated, but my friends who still attend UMES are still wondering where DST has gone.....any sorority for that matter. I personally have been attempting to set up a rapport between myself and the Delta Sigma Theta grad chapter on the Eastern Shore, but I have sadly been unsuccessful. I have been told that the grad chapter is "...not interested in new interests at this time nor will they be in the near future." I have emailed. I have spoken with members and I have gone to websites with no luck. I would hate to move somewhere else in order to become a member because there is so much that needs to be done in this area, but I would move to Calcutta to become a member. Not joining wouldn't stop me from continuing my community service efforts, but it's always been my dream. I am just hoping that someone can help me get in contact with anyone who can help me out with the graduate chapter and help my other friends on the undergrad level. Thanks in advance and sorry for the rambling.

Oh and I know that ppl who ask this type of question tend to get their "heads bitten off" so i'm prepared for that. Just bite away. Especially if I have said something offensive.

I have a few questions which are not related to the pursuit of Delta Sigma Theta.

1) Are NO chapters of NPHC sororities active at UMES right now?

2) How far away from UMES is Salisbury? I know little about the eastern shore -- they don't sound close.

LttleMsPrEp 11-19-2008 05:52 PM

UMES is very close to Salisbury (as in less than 30 minutes).. I have a very close friend that goes there and she said that some of the sororities were either put on probation or suspension (I can't remember which one and I'm not going to go into reasons because that would be hearsay and just not cool).

Senusret I 11-19-2008 05:53 PM

^^^ Thanks for responding. APO is getting rechartered at Salisbury and I used to be concerned about whether APO would work at UMES again if there was ever interest.

Interesting, no NPHC Sorority in that area..
I find that hard to believe

LttleMsPrEp 11-19-2008 08:23 PM

^^meaning NPHC's on the Eastern Shore of Maryland or just in the UMES vicinity?

If you attended UMES, you should know why Greek Life there is little to non-existent. If you don't know, you better ask somebody, ie alum from the late 80's.

They told you they were not interested in having a line at this time, so you just have to wait until they do. As for moving, you can't be sure that the chapter in that area will have a line either. And if they do that you will be chosen.

TheSeeker 11-21-2008 08:56 PM

Thank you for your response!! I was told that they were considering a grad chapter line about a year ago, but nothing since and I know I am taking a risk because there isn't a guarantee that I will be chosen no matter where I move to. There is a chance I wont be chosen if I stay here and they do have a line. I just wanted some feedback from someone other than myself.

TheSeeker 11-21-2008 09:04 PM

The only active sorority currently at UMES is Alpha Kappa Alpha.

TheSeeker 11-21-2008 09:07 PM

Thank you everyone for your feedback. I really appreciate it. I will just continue to do what needs to be done. If the opportunity presents itsself, I hope and pray that I will be prepared no matter what area of the world I end up.

I see this post was written in November 2008 and it is now May 2010 and nothing has changed with the university say to say. There is still only one sorority and man woman as well as men seeking other GLO.

I'm a little confused about this posting, but can anyone provide information on any NPHC activity in the Salisbury/Princess Anne area? I'm making a reasonable guess that any NPHC undergrad chapter would cover both schools (Salisbury & UMES) if that is allowed, they are about 30 minutes apart and I'm not sure Salisbury would have a chapter of its own.

The only NPHC fraternity mentioned on the Salisbury University website is DST, but there is no information on a president, just to contact the director of student activities...

I can't find *anything* current on the UMES site that talks about any of the NPHC fraternities or sororities other than the fact that Homecoming will have get togethers for the NPHC groups as well as others and one seminar cosponsored by the Delta Sigma Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha (which is the grad chapter in Salisbury).

I'm still finding a reasonable number of people in the UMES administration who are alumni of NPHC fraternities though...

What happened?

If you google you can find out about one incident within the past 20 years, and hints that the administration is/was against the return of the inactive/suspended/whatever chapters. However it's clear there are other issues as well that non-members may not be privy to.

ladygreek 05-31-2010 09:55 PM

As mentioned, the Delta collegiate chapter is a city-wide chapter that encompasses UMES and Salisbury. Three members were suspended in 2006, but the chapter was not. (Public info from our natioinal website.) However, it is possible that UMES has disallowed the chapter's presence on its campus due to what ever caused the suspensions in 2006.

Yup, that one incident was significant, but even if that fraternity chapter isn't on the campus, that still doesn't mesh with all of them being gone...

I did find a link from the UMES to http://www.nphcatumes.org , but most of the links from there were either to the same place or broken, except the Qs, whose website http://www.piepsilonques.org/ does show a line as recent as 2008. Whether that line was known by the administration, who knows...

Hello,
I might be attending University of Maryland of Eastern Shore this fall and I wanted to show you ladies what I found on Youtube. The video showed UMES Spring Fest 2011 and if you go to 12:54 Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated appeared. If anyone knows, what chapter that is because I am interested on joining Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOXiH...el_video_title
Thank you

KittyD7 05-18-2011 11:47 PM

I forgot about this one too

If you can't figure out the chapter designation at the school you attend, that's a huge fail.

Kitty, that could literally be any chapter in the first video, or even a group of women who are grad students or on staff.

In the second video, one of the comments says "crimson and cream all stars" -- you might not know this, but sometimes an "all star" team made up of multiple chapters or alumnae members will assemble to compete in step shows. In homecoming shows, the goal is often to have 100 percent ORGANIZATION participation, even if the chapter is not recognized.

I don't think the existence of either video suggests that there is an active chapter at UMES.

She didn't ask about chapter designation -- she asked what chapter THAT is. I interpreted that as "If this isn't the UMES chapter, then who are they."

KittyD7 05-19-2011 04:48 PM

Thanks for clearing that up. I appreciate it very much because the last thing I want to do it make a mistake.

naraht 05-19-2011 09:42 PM

Well, it really looks like UMES is more in favor of having NPHC fraternities on campus than the last time I looked. See http://www.umes.edu/StudentActivitie...009%20UMES.pdf for starters (which includes the letters for each of the fraternities and sororities) as well as http://www.umes.edu/StudentActivitie...ek%20Life.html and http://www.umes.edu/StudentActivitie...n%20Names.html

And BTW, in terms of contacting local sisters, Start at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NuRho/...sec=dir&slk=46 and go through the setup for trying to join, my guess is the moderator on the list is a possibility on who might know what's going on...

or perhaps one of the people/emails at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gi...5957779&v=wall might be useful

I would not advise this.

LOL. Woooooo...as always, if the members of a particular council/conference or GLO have not recommended something, that means that it should not be recommended.

:) KittyD7 can figure out the places to go and people to contact if she wants to find out stuff.

True, that didn't work so well when I tried to join Delta Sigma Theta. But I'm sure they were impressed when they saw that I was in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest Elephant figurine collection. :p
