Southern Proper and Vineyard Vines
Any opinions on these brands?
|
|
From what I gather they're two relatively new companies who made up some logos, marked their products way the eff up, called themselves "southern" and "elite," and I guess are acceptable to the social-climbers in the South who either come from money or want to spend most of their net worth pretending they come from money.

Trying too hard is in their modus operandi. Pretty sure it's in the ritual. |

Actually Vinyard Vines is from Martha's Vinyard and has been around in the north for over a decade. I first ran into vinyard vines stuff in Annapolis, MD. before I ever saw it in the south.
Just fyi - no biggie. Now Southern Proper ??? |
my chapter used Vineyard Vines and we absolutely LOVE them!!!! The fabric design was originally made/designed by our chapter in Spring 07 and our newest girls are still ordering bags now. They are so cute and fun! I definitely recommend them!

They went overboard with the "Frat Hat" |
I think the text writers for that website were heavily inspired by the J.Peterman storyline in Seinfeld (and the even maybe the real J.Peterman ;))

I like both brands ties. But that's the only thing SoPro makes that I'll wear. I have a few VV oxfords and a pair of shorts that I am happy with, but on the shorts I'm not sure the price difference between them and a comparable brand are worth it.

Hey Vandal, I'm from the South myself and I figured I'd chime in. For some reason that I have never understood, most people here don't pay attention to the Mason Dixon line. Anything above Virginia/WV is the North.
|
I actually rather like VV (which is odd because most people in Ohio are not familiar with it). I have family in GA and they love the stuff so I grew to like it a lot.
I've heard of Southern Proper, but only because my friends at SEC schools swear by it. I know that they mainly only make men's clothing, but I LOVE their purple skull ladies' headband. I also find their "Belles for Beaus" program interesting: http://www.southernproper.com/belles_for_beaus.html |
VV bowties tie very well

It makes quite a bit of sense, honestly. |

Also, take a look at the voting patterns of the country, generally, if it's blue, it's not southern (not counting Florida which is full of retired yankees and foriegners). JK!! :) But, having spent a LOT of time in Annapolis, including during this election cycle - the culture and climate are definitely not "southern". |
People still wear bowties? The only people I ever saw wearing them were the Nation of Islam guys on campus back in the day, or guys at prom/in weddings. I'm not a fan, if my husband wore one I'd laugh at him.

Bowties
It's rather like a woman wearing a hat - with the right attitude it is very compelling. But you do have to have self-confidence and certain panache.
I think they are sexy.;) 'specially when you stand behind your guy and tie it for him. |

And CB and SWTXBelle are right -- not everyone can wear them. It takes a certain body type and a certain attitude. (One lawyer friend of mine says they show a great deal of self-confidence -- you don't feel the need to have an arrow pointing out certain attributes 'cause you know everyone just knows.) And SWTXBelle, my wife agrees with you. ;) |

For what it's worth, here in Oklahoma, at least downtown and especially around the courthouse, there are a lot of bow ties being worn. They're very much in fashion down here for whatever reason.

I can't resist posting this section from the wikipedia page about bowties (I was going to just post a snarky reply to Kevin's last statement like "Because you all still think it's the 1940s down there?" and run, but there was too much I liked in this description instead ;) :)): Quote:

I've seen a few people wearing bowties regularly - more so in Boston than in CT, and the majority are attorneys.
|
One advantage of bow ties is that you don't spill food or drink on them.
And Nittany, contrary to the Wiki article to which you kindly linked (and which provided some good chickles) bow ties are not hard to tie -- at least not if you're intelligent and sophisticated enough to wear one to begin with. ;) |
