Sororities & Juicy Campus

I saw the website, juicy campus, and i was absolutely appauled. It has a lot ranking, gossiping, and discriminatory things towards the Greek system, among many other insane things. (Bamas in particular) As a PNM this kinda worries me. :(
Is there anything that can be done about this?

CrackerBarrel 11-03-2008 08:42 PM

Don't post on it?

I think a lot of it is funny, not so much the singling out individuals though. And I don't share the distaste for rankings/tiers that a lot here do.

FSUZeta 11-03-2008 08:43 PM

the best thing to do is not to participate in any juicycampus gossip. everything on there is unverified-either someones opinion or something posted by someone with an ax to grind.

bamabell09 11-03-2008 08:53 PM

sorry for the confusion, but i dont,at all, post on it....and there is nothing funny at all about Bama's page.its EXTREMELY racist and very anti-greek...
i was just wondering if this website would be removed because of its content

I understand, I was just saying that about all you can do about it is not post.

Kevin 11-03-2008 09:13 PM

JC has its uses so long as you know what it is and how unreliable the information is.

As many know on here, I am a huge dissenter regarding the use and purpose of JC. Take the advice to never, never post (especially responding in hopes of correcting info, etc). Unfortunately, if you read JC's Terms of Agreement, they leave no recourse for any type of corrections or removal of content. They owners of the site are proud of the trouble and controversy they create.

Fawn Liebowitz 11-04-2008 11:34 AM

Don't even waste time reading Juicy Campus. Form your own opinions about sororities at Alabama based on personal experience, not on what you read on that trashy site.

sarahsmilehawk 11-04-2008 01:24 PM

Panhellenic has told us to stay far, far away from Juicy Campus. It has trashed a few individual reputations (based on total fiction, from what I gather) and it's just altogether negative. It's NOT a good reflection of the attitudes at our campus as a whole.

From what I can tell, it's especially bad at SEC and other big greek schools. All you can do is avoid it, and don't ever ever ever form your opinion based on a JC post.

PANTHERTEKE 11-04-2008 02:13 PM

It all of a sudden got really big last week where I'm at, and in the past two weeks there's been like 13 pages worth of crap posted. Hopefully it'll die over though.

jessica.lanelle 11-04-2008 03:42 PM

Juicy Campus is for losers.

When Doves Cry 11-04-2008 05:48 PM

it just got popular over here too
it's funny reading some of the stuff they say about everyone. especially when you know it's not true. some people just love to argue:rolleyes:

srmom 11-04-2008 06:47 PM

Okay, I checked out the website and found something really disturbing - I saw posts regarding a kid I know, and I know his mom REALLY well. OMGosh! I'm not going to say anything to her, but geesh, I wish I hadn't read what I did - guilty knowledge. I wonder how many people have read what was said and believed it.

UGGHHH! Kids today! Don't they have any idea of the havoc they are raking with this unfettered access to the internet? People's reputations and futures can be ruined.

When Doves Cry 11-08-2008 03:18 AM

our chapter got dragged in. theyre saying such awful things. i want it taken down :(

Benzgirl 11-08-2008 01:00 PM

JC is what it is, and those who know what it is don't use it as a reference. I've read threads on it and you are correct, it's awful. Is there anything we can do about it? Yes...don't log on.

33girl 11-08-2008 01:09 PM

"everything old is new again."

JC is nothing different than the gossip and slander that have been going around campi for years, and sometimes appearing in newspapers or other media...this just happens to be in a more modern form. 50 years from now you'll be able to stick your card in a slot and have this crap fed directly into your brain without having to read it. And it'll be the same kind of stuff.

So true. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you're going to buy into every single thing you hear about a fraternity/sorority on that site, you are not the brightest bulb in the box.

Sidenote: I also find it really weird that 90% of the Greek related gossip on my particular school's section involves GUYS talking about other fraternities.

When Doves Cry 11-09-2008 02:41 AM

Well it's obvious (on my campus anyway) that the people saying bad things about sororities & fraternities are the ones that aren't in them and just go by what they heard as the stereotypes. From my experience, the Greeks actually respect each other. But then again, it's anonymous. Who knows? :)

LΩVE 11-12-2008 09:45 PM

The stuff I read about Bama sororities I have already heard elsewhere, and I imagine that's the case for a lot of the PNM's going through recruitment at big schools. They've probably already heard rumors from friends and family. There isn't a thing that can be done, but a PNM who doesn't join a sorority just because of what she read on Juicy Campus probably already knew what she wanted going in anyway, and was therefore easily swayed.

NappyBison 11-12-2008 10:05 PM

Juicy Campus has wreaked havoc on greek life at my school :(

People have gone as far as making "Prospect Lists" for sororities and fraternities. These lists have the full names of individuals who may/may not be interested individuals. I just think that this site has made it that much harder for prospects to remain discrete when people are putting their names out there.

But then this site makes me want to question how "discrete" some prospects are being, if people are able to pick them out. On the other hand, you can't miss a huge group of people lined up 30 minutes early for an event hosted by XYZ sorority/fraternity...

Psst.... it's "discreet" in this case.

There IS NO DISCRETION at Howard University, are you kidding me?

The P-Girls and the P-Boys are the non-Greeks who:

Run or participate in Brother to Brother (Alphas) and Sister to Sister (Deltas)

Join Circle K (AKAs) or NCNW (Deltas) or any of the other "feeder" organizations.

Raising money for Africare (AKA)

Pledged Pike (Kappa)

The list goes on and on.

And they have to line up that early because the Greeks will shut the doors if you arrive late.

It's a mess. The campus social life rises and sets on greek life in some way, either the pursuit of it or the conscious avoidance of it.

VandalSquirrel 11-12-2008 10:20 PM

I saw this listing on Craigslist http://pullman.craigslist.org/com/915585587.html not even in Rants & Raves, but int he general section (wtf?). With the grammar and lack of punctuation, as well as poor sentence structure leading to incomplete sentences, this person should be more worried about "pledging the library" (TM SenusretI 2007).

True true...

Be that as it may, I still don't think that jealous individuals should make it their business to post the names of those interested and why said individuals should or shouldn't be a member of XYZ. If you know who a couple of prospects are, then cool you know who's interested.

bostongreek 11-13-2008 12:30 PM

I've heard a lot of girls who were planning on rushing next year say that they no longer want to because of what they've read on JC. Not because of the rumors and reputations, but because they think that we're all catty and bitchy, which is actually completely untrue. It's sad that some people who are not even in greek life might end up ruining our panhellenic.

If they no longer want to because of something they've read on JuicyCampus, consider it a blessing.

Who would want such closed-minded members in their sorority?

Why is it jealousy? It's more likely people who just mock the entire system.

fantASTic 11-13-2008 09:52 PM

I'm proud of my campus - we have not had ANYONE respond negatively to sorority postings on JC! All the responses have been either positive about all sororities or neutral, which is definitely okay :)

If you take a look at some of the posts you'd pick up on the jealousy. But now that I think on it, a good majority of the posts are a bit sarcastic.

damn that must be nice!! JC recently blew up at USF but I think it quieted down a bit. The things on that site are extremely horrible and 95% of the time untrue. It sucks that nothing can be done to stop this site.

Serenity 11-15-2008 09:24 PM

I never even heard of the site before reading about it on GC. Curiosity got the better of me. Wow...

I can't even imagine writing some of the things I read on there. The thread titles alone were naaaaaasty. Yuck!

Yep! One of the ways in which being a Panhellenically friendly campus helps the whole Greek system.

If I'm lyin, I'm flyin. (We've talked about this in one of the several Pike at Howard threads. I didn't believe it for a long time until I saw it with my own eyes)

Shameful... but, then again, do I recall correctly from one of those Pike at Howard threads that such a phenomenon was already predicted?

Yes, I believe so, much to the chagrin of the NIC members (well, notwithstanding that some fraternities are jointly in NIC and NPHC, but you get my meaning).

I know I'm way behind but what happened with the Pike chapter?

I'm not sure. I went MIA for a while myself. I just went to the Pike website and they don't seem to have any chapters listed in DC (they have a clickable map). But then, it wouldn't make sense to me that they didn't have a DC alumni association, so maybe it's a problem with the map?

I'm sure someone else will chime in.
