Sad news from the world of American Girl Dolls
I've got an email from American Girl (yes, an e-mail) and it has been announced that Samantha and Nellie will be retired. The books will still be available, but the collection will be preserved in the archives. The reason why Samantha is being retired is because room needs to be made for new historical dolls.
I was shocked and saddened to see Samantha getting retired. I have a feeling that Kaya, Addy or Josefina may be next. But they may retire one of the other earlier dolls, like Molly or Kirsten. Samantha was one of my favorites along with Addy, Kit and Molly. |
What!!! Samantha was epic, so there goes my childhood. I dunno who Nellie is but I recognize most of the rest of them. I'd be super said if Kirsten is retired, because she has almost the same name as me (Kristen). She's Swedish and I'm Norwegian which are really similar. She was always my favorite.
|
My daughter has Samantha but since we have a dog named Samantha, the doll had to be Samantha 2. Samantha 2 has been living in the basement for quite some time now.
|
Samantha was my first American Girl doll, and the reason why I got into American Girl in the first place.
I have almost all the Samantha goodies I want, but I am still sad that she is being archived. I hope they bring her back someday. |
Samantha was my eldest daughter's doll - we have tons of Samantha stuff in storage. I'm sad - she was my favorite.
|
I have a Samantha doll that still sits on one of my bookshelves... that's sad! She was my favorite.
|
Samantha was my first AG doll! So sad she is retiring. Felicity was definitely my favorite, though.
Lucy--Nellie is Samantha's servant girl friend from the books. AG made her into a doll. Speaking of friends of AG characters, Felicity's friend Elizabeth Cole(the one from the loyalist family) was made into a doll as well. Except AG made the doll blond. I still have the books somewhere, and I know there are countless illustrations of Elizabeth as a brunette. Sellout.:p |
samantha was my American Girl doll! that is so sad! my cousin has Kirsten and the Native American one. Hope they don't retire those since they will probably be passed down to her younger sister.
|
I'm going to cry if Addy gets retired. She was my AG doll, and for a long time, I was the only one of my friends who had an AG doll, so really she was mine and my friends! We'd be busy for hours with her!
Felicity was one of my favorites, too. She had that pretty blue dress. It's really sad that I still have every one of the AG books (well, the first couple of series up to Molly, I think). I guess I've just been holding out until I have a daughter. |
I really liked Samantha, I didn't even know they made a Nellie doll- did she have her own collection or was she just part of Samantha's?
I wish they'd retire Molly for some reason, I just never cared for her. |

My sister and I both still have our dolls and their whole collections. She has Samantha (i'll have to pass along that she is more valuable now) and I have Kirsten. We had friends on our street that had Molly & Felicity. In fact we all went together to Williamsburg to the celebratory tea party when felicity came out :) Great memories, fun times :)

that's so sad!!!
I never had one of those dolls, but I did get a "girl of today" doll. Brown hair, brown eyes, and fair skin. I named her Anna She came in a red leather jumper with a black long sleeved shirt underneath, and dark striped stockings and black shoes. She's still in my room actually. lol. My bf thinks it's creepy because it sits on my bookshelf I also used to have a Magic Attic doll. Did anyone else? I had Allison (blonde) and my little sister had Megan (redhead) |
My college freshman daughter's reaction to the news? (She's the one with Samantha - her sister has Kirsten)
"Why do they hate me?" |

I don't think they'll retire her right now anyway because she's from the World War II era. |
Um, yeah, no. Just no...
This is not sad news. Sad news is a puppy being burned. This is not even news, peeps. This is a doll. *ducks as all the strange doll-loving, cosplay folks barrage me with how important their dolls really are* |

(And if you don't look like any of them, just say you're an American Girl of Today.) ;) |
Samantha is the only AG doll I ever got, and she has always been my favorite! It's sad to see her ending....I wish I had collected more of her accessories.

BTW, I think Scandia has already taken your cosplay-the-American-Girl-for-Halloween idea many times over. lollers! |
I was a Samantha fan as well- she was my one & only AG doll, mostly because she looked like me. :)
It makes me sad too. |
I feel bad that I can't even sympathize. My mom never bought me any doll/book except for Addy, so I have no idea about the other girls. I don't like seeing anything good end though.

They were bought out by Mattel.
It's sad in the context of dolls - or maybe, just as the end of what was a part of many girls' childhoods. I'm wistfully sad, because my eldest (who also looked like Samantha) so loved her doll and books. I'm not sad in the same sense I will be on Nov. 5th. |

--insert aww's here-- p.s. i hope Mattel doesnt royally eff this up. |
Hmm..the head of AG is an Alpha Gam (I think I heard, lol).;) Sorry I don't want to do research, my foot hurts (well I can use that excuse for at least another weeks, lol.)

Ellen Brothers is the current president of American Girl and executive vice president of Mattel, as well as a member of Mattel’s management committee. She graduated from U of Illinois. And is listed on the Alpha Gam website as a member of the Sigma chapter!! |
This is sad for me. I don't know if anyone knows but there were American Girl fashion shows. My grandmother took me to my first fashion show when I was five and my favorite picture of my grandmother was the Samantha model, my grandmother and me dressed like Samantha. When I was older, I was in a few of the shows as a Girl of Today and Samantha. She was my favorite doll even though I had four or five of them. I lost interest in the company a few years after Mattel bought it. I disliked most of the new girls. Has it really been a decade? I still have all the dolls and all the books for my daughters if I have any.
I am a little sad about it just because I had a personal connection. |

I wish that they would do an Asian main character. Ivy (Julie's friend) doesn't count, because she is a friend doll. I like the current Girl of the Year doll, Mia. She's my favorite of all of the GotY dolls so far. I might try to get her. And I don't get the earring on the Just Like You dolls. I understand with Addy and Josefina, but the earrings ruin the JLY dolls. |

I never got into the American Girl dolls or books. I think I was missing a girl gene when I was younger. I also never got into the Babysitters' Club books or the Sweet Valley High books. I preferred the Fudge books, Encyclopedia Brown books, Ramona books, and Bunnicula books. But if there had been an American Girl doll and book about an Asian-American main character, I think I would have gotten into that. |

What can I say? My mom used to threaten to pack up all my books as punishment if I was misbehaving. :) |

Little did she know I'd go next door and just pick up a book there LOL |
I do not understand the concept of withholding reading as a punishment. No matter how much you enjoy reading, withholding it will be counterproductive to say the least. Withholding TV, talking on the phone, going to the park, I understand. But reading benefits you in school.

It's a good problem to have, mind you, but it's still a problem! |

Well, I'm 43 and have learned to not even open a book unless I have the next 7 or 8 hours available to finish it ...lol. Once I start, I don't put it down til it's done. My daughter comes by it honest!
