of course, with delayed rush comes preconceived stereotypes about the sororities. we have six at my school, and i guess i'll name them after the 6 friends characters cause that's nice and simple, but still fun.

Rachel-this sorority is historically known for having the best sisterhood bonds, but supposedly has a lot of the ugly/fat girls that don't party a lot? from what i've seen around campus this doesn't seem true.
Ross-has been known as the top one on campus, but according to some people the pledge class last year left something to be desired. huge party girls that got in trouble last year for dirty rushing. not sure how i feel about them yet, but someone from my high school is currently in this sorority.
Monica-second in command to the Ross's. supposedly all the jappy girls from the north are here. ive heard that they do a lot of coke. yet, every single Monica ive met has been genuinely nice and friendly. based on the girls, im interested in this one.
Chandler-these are the sweet girls that like to go out and have fun, but still stay classy. other than that i don't know too much about them.
Joey-the southern girls. very conservative and supposedly very stuck-up. ive met some nice ones and some kind of stand-offish ones, but im willing to give them a chance.
Phoebe-i don't really know a lot about them either, though my big sis from another group is in this one and she likes it, but it was her second choice when she was rushing. supposedly no one pays attention to these girls. i dont know, i like my big sis, so maybe if the girls are like her...

anyway, im so excited to be here and to start rush in january!

Good luck to you.

Just because the preconceived stereotypes are there doesn't mean you have to go and promote them.

But as VP said, good luck to you.

BetteDavisEyes 10-02-2008 08:59 PM

HAHAHAHAHA! I love those of you who QFP. It makes me happy.

To the OP: With your mindset, good luck. Your racist views are sure to be real winners during recruitment.

im not a racist, actually. i never said i believed in the stereotypes at all.

Then why refer to them as the "jappy" girls? You may not be racist but you're certainly perpetuating that stereotype by acknowledging as sorority as such.

SWTXBelle 10-02-2008 09:57 PM

But some of her best friends are japs!

Where I come from "jappy" is extremely offensive and refers to a particular religion (not a race). I'll give eleven12 the benefit of the doubt that she doesn't know the origin of the term but please never use this adjective again! Open your mind, broaden your horizons and good luck.

BetteDavisEyes 10-02-2008 10:43 PM

I'm still trying to figure out if she was refering to JAPS (Jewish American Princess) or "japs" as in a deragatory remark towards the Japanese.

Either way, it's insulting as hell.

eleven12 10-02-2008 10:43 PM

my apologies everyone.

BetteDavisEyes 10-02-2008 10:50 PM

Live and learn.

Search the boards. Read Curlygirly's rush thread and learn about the best way to make a recruitment thread.

Good-luck.

I assume the OP's jappy reference is a stereotype on new money, wealthy Jewish girls. Is Jappy any worse than WASPy?

I personally don't like being called a WASP.

No idea, that's what is in the box under "race or color of mother/father". Since both my parents were listed as WASPs, that makes me one I guess.

violetpretty 10-02-2008 11:15 PM

In my experience with the term JAP, the emphasis is on the P, not the J. Jokes are about the P.

Race is nowhere on my birth certificate. It's not on my children's' birth certificates either. Hmmm.

Ditto in my experience as well. I grew up in an area with a lot of spoiled wealthy girls who referred to themselves as that and were proud of the monicker. Similar to the one or two GCers who designate themselves as witches with a capital B, they think their poor manners are okay since they can't help themselves because they are jappy or witchy.

als463 10-03-2008 08:44 AM

Yeah...I always considered it a negative thing to say about someone but, the other night on MTV's "The Island" when they were voting between Robin and Rachel, Collie looked at Robin and said, "Us Jappy girls gotta' stick together." I thought that was such a random thing to say. Is that considered acceptable to say about yourself, then? I come from an area of little to no diversity-so, things like this are pretty new to me...

nittanyalum 10-03-2008 08:49 AM

^^^Didn't you serve overseas in the military? How can you say you haven't been exposed to diversity? Every time you post now you try to come across as a miss-goody-two-shoes. GC memory's too long for that.

I did serve overseas (once I was in college). I was pulled out after completing my first semester. In fact, until I joined my sorority (when I returned from overseas) I never had a Jewish friend. In my area-it's pretty tiny with pretty much no diversity. Maybe I did have a Jewish friend (in the military) but, I didn't realize he/ she was Jewish. I remember people complaining at PSU that there was little to no diversity (usually the kids from bigger cities) and I would look at them like they were crazy. If you check out the statistics from my high school-it's about 99% Caucasian. Plus, it's a small school where we only graduated about 180 in my class. Thankfully to the military and my collegiate experience, I have encountered many other great and diverse groups of people but, before that-I hadn't.

I'm not trying to come off as "miss-goody-two-shoes" so, please don't think that...I was simply stating that even hearing that term was new to me. The first time I ever even heard that term was about a year or two ago (unless people have said it around me and I never paid any attention because I had no clue what the hell it meant). I asked my friends back home and my mom if they all knew what it meant and they all thought it dealt with people from an Asian background, as well. So, when I heard it explained-it seemed to hold a negative connotation to me. I assume I'm right-so, I would figure people wouldn't be so quick to label themselves as such.

lilzetakitten 10-03-2008 09:23 AM

Good luck with recruitment, OP!
And jumping on the 'JAP' bandwagon... my FI's initials are JAP. I'm really glad he never uses them.

VERY strange! I thought I had seen it all when it comes to vital documents! Yikes!

Seriously, for those of you all who think someone is flattered to be called a WASP, you are very mistaken. I can only imagine that using JAP would be so, too.

ForeverRoses 10-03-2008 10:59 AM

http://www.pophouse.com/site_images/...~DSC019111.JPG

My obnoxious grandmother gave me this paperdoll set for my birthday when I was a kid. Even then I knew it was odd. As an adult, I cannot imagine calling someone that. Let alone giving this to a child to play with. I don't like the term WASP either. (and for the record I'm Catholic so I don't fall into either stereotype).

And race/ethnicity of my parents isn't on my birth certificate. Only my parents names & place of birth.

ellebud 10-03-2008 01:14 PM

So, I looked at my birth certificate, old and crinkled with age. It says Race: Caucasian, Jewish. My parents' birthcertificates were also in the folder, for my father (who was born in 1910...yes, he was in his mid 40s when I was born) there was a place for race (and please forgive the next) and a space for Negro as a separate category.

As far as "Jap" vs. JAP vs. WASP: I think that anytime one marginalizes a group of people by a sterotype it is unfortunate. And, scientifically speaking probably not accurate.

ellebud 10-03-2008 01:28 PM

Please add: Marginalize or insults or defames a group of people. And the use of the word "unfortunate" is a credit to my mother who would use that word in the strongest possible way.

This is the state of California "Certificate of Live Birth" if you're interested, and right after the race or color box for my father, it asks what my father's present or last occupation was, and the next box is kind of industry or business. It has no place for the mother's profession. it also lists their birth places and social security numbers.

That's what I immediately thought too, but then again I was taught that it was a bad word when I was growing up. It was more widely used in the Continental US and not so much here, where the Japanese made up the majority of Hawaii's population for a long time.

JAP's

I have always despised that line, but here it seems very appropriate. The term JAP started out as a joke but became a real problem on campuses back in the late 70's and early 80's when Jewish women were taunted as they walked to class, to the dorms, to their sorority houses or just walked around. Not a joke anymore.

In my home, we always were told that Jewish fathers who had fought in WW11 pampered their daughters upon returning to the US because of the terrible atrocities committed upon young Jewish girls by the Nazis. It makes sense on some level. I know that some of these girls from my generation turned out to be very shallow and materialistic so I can see how the term JAP developed. But it is a very derogatory remark to attribute to an entire group of people. I certainly was never a JAP, although there were times when I wished I could have everything I wanted just by asking Daddy for it like some girls I knew. But my Dad was a wonderful, practical man who showed me how to appreciate what I did have and to work for what I wanted. There is nothing so satisfying as to earn your own rewards.

Speaking of jokes, this is so corny but I laughed anyway. A sorority sister sent this to me. I hope you'll laugh, too.

The Bee's Bar Mitzvah

Two bees met in a field. One said to the other, "How are things going?"

"Really bad," said the second bee. "The weather has been cold, wet and damp, and there aren't any flowers, so I can't make honey."

"No problem," said the first bee, "Just fly down five blocks and turn left. Keep going until you see all the cars. There's a Bar Mitzvah going on and there are all kinds of fresh flowers and fresh fruit."

"Thanks for the tip," said the second bee, and flew away.

A few hours later the two bees ran into each other again. The first bee asked, "How'd it go?"

"Great!" said the second bee. "It was everything you said it would be. There was plenty of fruit and, oh, such huge floral arrangements on every table."

"Uh, what's that thing on your head?" asked the first bee.

"That's my *yarmulke," said the second bee. "I didn't want them to think I was a wasp!"

*Skull cap worn by Orthodox Jews for the one or two who don't know what that is!

If the girls in that sorority refer to themselves as JAPs, then it is only fair that others be allowed to do the same. If they don't call themselves that, then they probably consider it offensive and it shouldn't be used.

I think the term JAP is offensive. I am Jewish...my father treated me like a princess, but I am NOT a JAP.

Just my two cents.

Oh, and I loved the bee joke, too! :D

ajmom3 10-11-2008 11:33 AM

The term JAP is offensive but only to a point. It is an acronym for Jewish American Princess and used to describe a whiney, overindulged, rich (via parents) girl who is ultra materialistic, shallow and usually "elitist". That said, many true JAPS that I know secretly are proud to be considered in that category. There is a certain JAP uniform look as well (straight hair...usually chemically done, perfect sized bought and paid for nose, designer pocketbooks, tight expensive jeans paired with stilletto heals and too much gaudy but gold jewelry).
