What was your most memorable Holloween costume?
o.k. greekchatters. It's 10/01/08 and it's Holloween time. For those of you who went out "Trick or Treating" as a child, what was your most memorable costume? Did you wear the same costume every year, or did you go as someone different each year?
|
I wore a different costume each year. Sometimes my mom made them and sometimes we bought them.
The most memorable is when I went as Rainbow Bright. My mother made it and the costume was hot and scratcy to my skin. I hated that thing and she made me wear it. |
A friend and I (in college) decided to go as "Jem and the Holograms." There were four of us supposed to be doing it... but two backed out at the last minute. We had another friend with us, who was dressed as a pimp. So everyone thought we were hos, so we ran with it. It was actually hysterically funny. We went out trick or treating for Habitat for Humanity, asking for change (and candy.)
As a kid I'd go nuts on Halloween. Actually I still do. Hubby, the dog, and I are dressing up as pirates this year. I may have to post pictures if the costumes turn out as cute as I think they will. We have great plans to try to scare the crap out of the kids in our neighborhood. :D |
I was Tinker Bell. I wore a different costume sometimes, but I liked being Tinker Bell the most.:p
|
I was a hippie in fourth grade -- 1988
|
My mom (bless her heart :D) was not creative at all,. My costumes weren't imaginitive at all until I could design them and execute the design myself.
candy bar: I replicated a candy bar wrapper to adult-sized dimensions. I think I must have used stapled paper bags as this was in my pre-license days and there weren't any fabric stores nearby. In any case, it was an accurate blowup despite the lack of computers in that era. Since I was creative, at least compared to Mom, I tried to make decent costumes when the kiddos were little. Christmas Tree: Brown Pants and a tree-shaped felt tunic decorated with lightweight trims. I did not wire the tunic but it must be possible as I have seen lighted sweatshirts Sandwich: 1" white foam for the bread. Paint the edges brown. Pink and yellow felt for ham and cheese. Cut the ham felt into a circular piece. Cut holes in the yellow felt for swiss cheese. Red poster board cut in a circle for a tomato. Green crepe/tissue paper for the lettuce. Refrigerator and Dice: Both moving box recyclers.. Cut armholes first. For dice, check a real one to make sure the dot placement is correct For refrigerator, I cut the armholes on the sides and then cut the front panel from the top and one side so it could swing open. From another section of cardboard, I made a false back and shelves. I soaked off labels from whatever jars I had and also traced the shapes of the containers in the cardboard fridge. I also glued empty clean actual cardboard and plastic (glass was too heavy) containers in the shelves. t these are 2 of my best |
My costumes were pretty boring as a kid. I believe I was a bunny rabbit two years in a row - complete with pink feety pajamas and a pin on tail. As an adult, I can have more fun! We recently started going out as a group for Halloween - both to house parties and bars/clubs. In 2006, four girlfriends and I were an 80s rock band - big crimped hair, fishnets, leg warmers and mini-skirts. Last year we were Pirate wenches - weapons and all. This year - I'm on the hunt for a Ninja outfit!

I want to see a picture of your doggie in costume!! |
My most memoriable costume was the year that my dad made me a costume that was a carton of 1/2 and 1/2 ... I wore it to school .. but had to sit in the chairs the the back of the room 'cause I couldn't fit into the seat fixed to the desk *lol* ..
for my son I got into making his costumes .. I made Zoro, two different dinosaurs, a power ranger (!), and abombible snow man -- that one was a mistake for Arizona .. it was warm that Holloween and he roasted... |
When I was little I had this pink sparkly dress that was used for several Halloweens as different things (princess, Miss America, etc). One year I dressed up in a suit and went as an IRS auditor, complete with briefcase to hold candy. My favorite was probably when I went as the night sky. I wore all black, my outfit had tons of gold cardboard stars all over it, and had this gold, glitter halo-thing around my face.
As an adult, my favorite costume was when I went as a wild night in bed (it was a college party, of course). I don't know what I'm going to do for this year. |
I had an awesome tooth fair costume in 1st grade. My wand with a tooth on it was the best. I was also a troll a few years later (I think it's more of a Norwegian thing) and that was awesome! Burlap sack, "dirty" face, crimpy hair. Yeah, I was damn cute.
No idea what to be this year! I think I'm going to San Luis Obispo so I should find a freaking costume! |
As a kid - the butterfly costume my mom handmade. I had these giant gorgeous wings that I adored!
As an adult - a couple years ago 7 of us (1 guy, 6 girls) dressed up as Robert Palmer and video girls. It was hilarious since it was for an office contest, and we won first place out of I think at least 50 entrants. |
This year I am going as an intern from Seattle Grace Hospital. :) Not sure which one, though. Lol.
|
Last year I was Raggedy Ann
(I'm a teacher and we dressed up for the day at school) And one of my most memorable from when I was a kid was when I was a butterfly. My mom cut out and decorated cardboard wings for my sister and me. Another time, I was lame and just wore my basketball uniform (5th grade); I was a witch once; and once I wore my dad's sailor suit from when he was in the navy. I don't remember many others. |
The year we were all ghosts.
Polyester, floral ghosts. Thanks Mom! (It was the 70's, and she was just tired!) I remember during the Tylenol scare my freshman year, someone in my dorm went as a bottle of Tylenol. |
When I was in 5th grade, I was the Pink Power Ranger. Ahhh, I loved that costume.
|
I got together with a group of friends and we went as different incarnation of Madonna. I rocked the "Like a Virgin" look with the lace gloves and crucifix.
Another good one was GOLDEN GIRLS, I was Rose. |
When I was little, I went as Raggedy Ann for a couple of years. I wore a blue floral-print dress and red-and-white striped knee-highs. My mom made me a wig using a mop head, which she dyed red to look like Raggedy Ann's red yarn hair. She got me some black eyeliner so that I could draw her eyelashes and smile onto my face, and she got me some red lipstick so that I could have her red nose and lips. The costume was a big hit.
|
When I was a freshman in college, it was tradition for us to trick-or-treat at the President's house and faculty condos on campus. My dorm suite decided to go as nuns, and when the faculty opened their doors, we sang "Trick or Treeeeeat."
Since my birthday is near Halloween, and therefore sometimes on the day of many Halloween parties, I've gone as a birthday present a couple of times...which basically consists of wrapping myself up in a bow. |
When I was younger, the Flying Nun or a Sandwich
When I was in college, a Thermometer. |

when i was child (1970s) my mom was awesome at sewing so she made our costumes. One yr i was raggety ann and then the next yr i was a hearshy candy bar and the next i was a human candy corn. this i yr i want t o go as a human lego. Get a bunch of red solo plastic cups and sweats or take my old Job's daughter white robe and go as either an angel or a ghost
|
As a child, I remember all the fun things that Mama helped us 'be'. We'd rummage through the closets at home and come up with something humorous yet very effective.
College: went to Halloween social as a Playboy Bunny. CUTE pic with a guy I'm still friends with (he's married to a pledge sister...) Did I REALLY have the guts to wear that? Adult: we had just started dating & I made George & Jane Jetson costumes for an Alpha Gam alum Halloween party! Oh, how fun! My children: husband is an SAE, so I made the Anne Geddes-knockoff lion costume for #1 son's first Halloween and passed it around the SAE alum crew. Each year is an adventure--especially when I made a wizard's robe, puss-n-boots (think Shrek), Dopey and goodness-knows-how-many princess items! |
My mom always sewed all of my costumes as a kid. I remember being a pumpkin, a skeleton and a witch. The best one was in 1976, when everybody was making a big deal out of the bicentennial, my mom made me a beautiful colonial girl dress and hat. I loved that one.
As an adult, my best one was a tin man costume. I was working in a child psych hospital so all the staff dressed up (and we made costumes for all 60 kids too!). The Occupational Therapy and Recreational Therapy staff (there were 7 of us) were all characters from the Wizard of Oz. My tin man was home made from cardboard. I couldn't sit while wearing it, but it looked really good. Now I just have a Renaissance costume that I wear whenever I need a costume. Although, one year, for the Cub Scout pack meeting/Halloween party, I was having a bad week and didn't feel like putting on that dress so I dressed all in black, put dark circles under my eyes and this crazy black hair wig that was all ratty and messed up. When grownups asked me what I was, I said I was a Menopausal Mom....lol. |
The most memorable (and not for a good reason) was the one my aunt forced on my in elementary school. I was staying with her at the time and she refused to let me wear the cat costume my mom had painstakingly made for me. Instead, she made me a costume she approved of and I had to go to school dressed as the Virgin Mary.
As if things couldn't get worse, I was in public school at the time and some parents & teachers found my costume offensive so I had to sit in the office crying my heart out while all the other kids joined in the parade. I was too young to understand the ramnifications of wearing a religious costume at a public school. |
Most memorable: Being a ballerina in my senior year of high school with an actual tutu.
Imagine trying to sit in a desk! The teachers allowed me to sit on the floor eventually. |
My mom's not creative so most of our costumes were store-bought. In kindergarten, I was Bridal Barbie. It came with one of those plastic masks and it was really cold that night, so I was shivering while my face was all sweaty in the mask. In first grade, I was a witch. In third grade, my aunt sewed me a purple princess dress and my crown was a white lace-and-pearl wedding crown. In fifth grade, I was an angel. In seventh grade, I went as a monster. I had one of those latex masks and wore all black. In eighth grade, I wore a faceless mask (black hood with black mesh over the face) and black clothes and carried a butcher knife.
In college, I was a Playboy bunny, a flasher (wore flashing Halloween safety lights under my jacket), and Barbie's slutty friend (my roommate and I were supposed to go as Barbies...she went all out as Princess Barbie and I procrastinated so I had to just throw something together at the last minute). After college, I've been an 80's girl and a devil. This year, I'm thinking of going as a cowgirl, saloon girl, or Little Bo Peep/Mary Had A Little Lamb. |
Shotgun wedding bride. Although Jenna Bush is a close second.
|
I've gone as a shooting star (complete with watergun), and last year I was Amy Winehouse. That costume was a smashing success. I hope this year to be Slash from GNR, but I'm not sure I can afford to buy a wig and tophat.
The best costumes are the cheap ones where you're the only one wearing it! I hate the variations on slutty girl- slutty policewoman, slutty french maid, slutty cat, slutty devil, slutty angel. Enough! |

My most creative costume was last year's. I was a devil with a blue dress on - complete with blue wig ([horns] and shades to match). I made my then-boyfriend be Johnny B. Goode. :D We were cute! This year, I am going as Sailor Moon! |
I used to go out in the same costume every year. I would go out as a fat dude. I used my grandfathers coat and some pillows to make me look big.
After a while, I used to get scared to go out trick or treating because back when I was a kid, a lot of kids would take their candy to get scanned to make sure tooth picks or razor blades weren't in the candy. There are some sick jokers in this world. |
The only costume that I vividly remember was my "mix and match" scary movie killer costume. I think I had the Scream mask with Freddy Kreuger hands and a Jason machete -- something stupid like that. The only reason I remember it is because several of the parents in my neighborhood SWORE they had seen my costume in a preview for an upcoming movie
|
As a kid:
Raggedy Ann (go figure!) Wonder Woman Laura Ingalls Alarm Clock As a teenager: Wizard Deviless As an adult: Alice in Wonderland |
When I was younger, my brother, sister and I would do themes for Halloween... we've done the Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland & Peter Pan to name a few...
Favorite costumes? As a kid- Raggedy Ann, a teenager- 80's chick, college- beer garden girl This year I'm going as a fairy... with a twist. :) |

I also grew-up in year-round school, and I was always tracked out during halloween, so my brother and I would go and visit my grandparents and go trick or treating with our cousins in Niagara Falls. The year I was the pink ranger, my brother and one of my cousins were the red ranger, and my other cousin was the green ranger. I've also been a bride, princess, witch, a playing card (easy and cheap costume to make!) 50's girl (with a pink poodle skirt lol!), Miss America, however one costume I always wanted to do but never got to was be the bride of frankenstein (don't ask lol, I just kind of always wanted to). |
As a kid it is a tie between...
The Ninja Costume my mom made me and my hobo costume complete with burnt cork beard and hobo pot. As an adult... I’m 6’7 and went to the thrift store and bought the tiniest blazer I could find. It didn’t take to long until the shoulders busted out as I wore it around the house…Big/Fat Guy in a Little Coat. |
It would be a tie between when I was Scarlett O'Hara (the bbq dress), Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, or Devil with a Blue Dress On.
I must say, I enjoyed the Devil with a Blue Dress On. It was simple. I went to Macy's clearence section, found a slinky tight blue formal dress, and put on some sequined horns. Had a bunch of free drinks that night. I believe that was also when I got yelled at for texting someone 8 hours behind me in time zones professing my love for peach martini's. |
This one was actually from my parents when I was little. They went to an adults halloween party with two other couples as a "6-pack." They got some cheap garbage cans and cut out the bottoms. They decorated the outsides like some beer brand and then roped them so that they rested on their shoulders. Then, they roped themselves together to form the 6-pack. If you get the outside label right, it is pretty impressive.
|
I remember being the Cowardly Lion, complete with mane and paws. That was my favorite year because my big sister was the one who took me trick-or-treating. She was dressed up at Homey D. Clown, complete with cardboard sign that said "Homey don't play that" and a sock full of powder to hit people with. It was the most awesome thing ever. :D
|
My G.I. Joe poncho.:D It got ripped on the school fence when I ran from a wild dog.:(
