I wish I knew too. I have gotten better about it though as I've gotten older. I use to wait until the night before to write my 10 page papers. That was awful. I give myself at least 3 days now. :D

Best advice... just stop screwing around and do it:D

You can start by spelling it right.

When I don't want to procrastinate (or when I KNOW I can't procrastinate much longer! :p ) I try going to a place where there are little to no distractions.

This means no computer, no tv.. basically nothing else to do but finish up work (Those little cubicles in the library seem to work just fine for this :) ). Sometimes it means going solo as well... most of the time when I'm with friends, I'd rather talk/hang out with them than think about doing my work :)

lol!

Just sit down and do it! If you do a little everyday, you won't have to wait until the last minute to do everything. Visualize how you will feel when the assignment is finished and you can enjoy yourself. Maybe you enjoy the adrenaline rush of putting things off until the last minute. Instead replace that feeling with the satisfaction of completing your assignments on time.

Hon, I feel your pain.

The best thing, I have found, is to have someone hold you accountable. Tell a good friend that you have a huge paper (test, presentation, whatever) and that it MUST be done by such-and-such date. Then, have her periodically ask you about it. :)

Good luck!

I have found for me that procrastination is a way of life. I cannot function well unless I am under pressure. Well, I can't turn out any decent work, at least.

I hope this whole procrastination thing is a phase and that when we get out of college, we magically have the motivation to get everything done asap ... well i'm assuming that magical motivation is a pay check.

Not always is procrastination a bad thing. I usually make it a point to put myself under a little pressure because I thrive when I have something or someone lighting a fire under my ass. My best papers have been written an average of 6 hours before they were due. Just make sure you know what you're doing. If you're a slow reader or a slow thinker then maybe you oughta be doing something other than screwing around on the computer asking how not to screw around ;) . What you ought to do is like 4 days before a paper is due write on your calendar "paper due today" so you can fool yourself into thinking it's really due then. That works well.

Yep, some of my best work gets done at 6am the morning that it's due.

My roomates and I give each other deadlines. (for example- "You have 2 hours to finish that paper!") It actually works! We also take each other snacks and stuff to keep each other motivated while we're studying.

However great this sounds, let me just say that I'm working on 2 papers, a takehome test, and a journal that are all due at 8 am tomorrow...

Update on my procrastination

I have gotten better since I wrote the post. To encourage myself to study for my finals I've been giving myself breaks where I just watch tv, read a magazine, or check my e-mail for about 15-20 minutes and then go back to studying.

I take my last finale tomorrow, this is going to actually sound strange but I am looking forward to next semester and using my new study tips.

Thanks for all the good advice about procrastination.
