names...

I will at this point agree with Erik...just for a moment. Words are words, because if you ask any woman they'll tell you about their badge (thanks AGD). I wear a badge.

But you're right...they are names, and as long as we are all wearing our own badges, then good for us!

From a TKE lover :)

The1calledTKE 12-13-2001 08:21 PM

The right side of the triangle on the badge is always perpendicular to the ground, thereby depicying the geographic location of the first three chapters.

From the late Richard Russell Hall, Exec Sec., our own
Bruce B. Melchert, PGP, KoA, OGE, etc., field rep, went
up to Winnipeg and colonized. Named "Canadian Alpha
Colony," the University of Manitoba group became Zeta
Iota chapter. Out of this came Dr. Malcolm Seagrave who
wrote a great TKE songbook, last known to be somewhere
in HQ; Barrie Booth, KoA, field rep; the current Premier of
Manitoba is a ZI Teke. We produced several good fraters
and there is no reason the chapter was allowed to die other
than lack of service. We should be back there. It is simply
a decision to be made, a priority matter.

Who was the first Grand Pyrtanis not initiated a Alpha Chapter?

Erik P Conard 12-15-2001 08:46 AM

First aside from Alpha...

William D. Reeve, Theta Chapter, U of Minnesota, became TKE Grand Prytanis in 1921. He was later to be known as a writer
of mathematics textbooks.

The1calledTKE 12-16-2001 03:43 PM

What chapter did the Sequoyah club later become?

Erik P Conard 12-16-2001 03:50 PM

Nu chapter, U Cal-Berkeley. Now inactive, the house is rented
to some three-eyed cretins...the entire campus is full of fruitcakes, Greeks barely surviving, once a bastion of 40+ chapters...kinda sad. It is laughable in that it is full of asians
who are super students, but school does not know what to do as they knock the lid off the tests and the other 'less gifted' are
having trouble sustaining. Send 'em Kingman Brewster if they
want to have a real donnybrook....him and Angela Davis...well

The1calledTKE 12-17-2001 09:08 AM

What chapter did the local fraternity Delta Delta Tau later become and what is the significance?

Erik P Conard 12-17-2001 11:48 AM

are you referring to the long-successful Delta Delta Delta Tau,
a four name fraternity at Concord College which finally joined TKE after we had pursued them many years?

The1calledTKE 12-17-2001 12:27 PM

No I am not talking about that one. Let me give you a hint. This chapter was installed during a war.

The1calledTKE 12-18-2001 08:57 AM

The answer to the question is Colorado State College, The Delta Delta chapter. They became the 100th chapter.

The1calledTKE 12-18-2001 09:01 AM

What job did past Grand Prytanis James C. Logan hold?

Erik P Conard 12-18-2001 11:19 AM

Delta Delta chapter, UNC

Colorado State College of Education, Greeley, now known as
the University of Northern Colorado...you threw me there as you
said it was installed during a war. That, our green-teethed congress called, was a "police action," as we never declared
war. I was in high school when this many times TOP TEKE chapter was installed. They had a 100 man chapter for years
The Knights of Apollo was founded there during that weekend of
the installation. Wally Ginn, KoA, of Denver, is the only surviving
founder of KoA. He was a field rep then, and did not cook but was prettier than our well-hung Buckwheat.
The UNC chapter of TKE is hosting a Rush Clinic on Saturday,
19 Jan, and one of the pelican boys, Bobby Jarred, plus at least one Grand Councillor, Dr. Herb Songer, will be there. The TKEs
at Greeley are coming back fast.....YITB, Erik, KoA, CFC, Denver Alumni chapter

The1calledTKE 12-19-2001 09:17 AM

James C. Logan was a Kansas City attorney.

400th chapter, Rio Grande, Ohio
TKE has issued 459 charters thru Upsilon Gamma chapter
We need to return to a few, don't we?
What are YOU doing to help revive them?

The1calledTKE 12-21-2001 12:06 PM

To my knowledge all the chapters in my state that were inactive are allready rechartered and I do believe Georgia's last inactive chapter (Georgia State) recolonized not to long ago. I don't really have the oppurtunities right now to go to other states to help rebuild at the moment. How many inactive chapters we got? You don't concider a colony an inactive chapter do you?

The1calledTKE 12-22-2001 11:43 AM

How many chapters went inactive after the great depression ?

The1calledTKE 12-22-2001 09:33 PM

Only 2!!!

Erik P Conard 12-22-2001 10:36 PM

only two inactive...but

Yes, likely only two TKE chapters went inactive during the great
depression. TKE had only about 30 chapters then. The college
population was quite different , and the affluent went without
many scholarships, no student aid. I would guess that over 50% of the kids in college could not have even passed the entry
exams then. Fraternities as we know them today did not exist
then in teachers' colleges, streetcar colleges, trade schools, and the complexion was quite different.
I am not trying to pass judgement nor take either side, it was just a different era. My central Kansas high school class of '54
sent half the kids to college, half flunked out or quit by the end of the first year. There was such a stigma to having failed that you hardly ever would dare return to your old home town.
The junior college and night schools were so looked down upon, the nursing schools (generally held at hospitals), the trade schools, all looked upon as a second-rate school. The big university or the ivied walled private schools were indeed an
elite place. Now you can get a Master's degree in air conditioning or feed technology--hardly what we would call a scholastic program using the old measuring stick.
When I was on the road in the mid-50s, TKE had 5 inactive ones, of the over 110 active chapters. Now look at us. We have
gone into places really not suited for fraternities and have filled
our ranks with less than "collegiate" material. In the race to be
the biggest and best in all things, we are reaping what we sow.
Again, that is how it is...The Greek movement has its dumbing down just like many other old hallowed institutions. We have the fast food mentality here, too. I do not know how to stop it or
if it will ever return--likely not. As the torch is passed, we enter into a new era and must live with it, warts and all. And in fifty years we will look upon today as "the good ole days."

The1calledTKE 12-23-2001 10:05 AM

What year in the sixty's did TKE lose 2 past grand prytanis and one current grand prytanis ( the first while in office to pass away).

The1calledTKE 12-24-2001 12:21 PM

The answer is 1966.

The1calledTKE 12-24-2001 12:22 PM

Here is a easy one since hardly anyone answers the questions anymore. Write the cold night paragraph.

GmuTeke 12-25-2001 12:35 AM

::clears throat:: ahem

On a very very cold Tuesday night, January 10th, 1899 in the upper east dormintory of 504 East Locust Street, 5 men, Joseph L Settles, James C McNutt, Clarence A Mayer, Owen I Truitt, and C. Roy Atkinson founded the Knights of the Classic Lore, which later became known as the fraternity of Tau Kappa Epsilon.

In my chapter, it's known as "Who, What and Where"

The1calledTKE 12-26-2001 09:09 AM

tkeos443 12-28-2001 01:25 AM

Leadership School, 1982--WRONG

The first TKE L:eadership School I ever went to was hosted by
Gamma Phi (Emporia, my home chapter) in the spring of 1955,
at the Hotel President, Kansas City, MO. In attendance were
chapters Xi-Washington U; Delta Lambda, Central Mo, Delta Mu,
Pittsburg State; Delta Nu, NW Mo, Kansas City U colony; Alpha
Phi, KU, Phi, Nebraska, Alpha Lambda, K-State, Beta Theta, MU,
Beta Omega, SW Mo, and Alpha Upsilon, Ft. Hays. Subsequent
leadership schools were held at the President until the 60s. A
Leadership School, I hosted it, was held at Springfield, MO, in
1968 with over 20 chapters and colonies in attendance. The chapter, Delta Mu, Pittsburg, was in charge.
A goodly numer of regional leadership schools were held in the
fifites, more than I can count.
How quickly we forget.
These were good, ran by the undergrads, and heavily attended by Chapter Advisers and Grand Council members.
In those days chapters could talk coherently to each other, drink
responsibly and learn many new things. Within a couple of weeks TKE had pledged an additional 150 men to the various chapters, so inspired were they.
We are coming back, and the further away from HQ and closer to home, the better. This is not to badmouth HQ rather to get us
nearer our turf and be congenial to one another.
We will be holding the third Regional Leadership Conference in
Colorado this sprring, and are having our best year ever.

The1calledTKE 12-28-2001 12:17 PM

They may have said leadership schools then but I was talking about the regional leadership conferences. It was added to the allready existing district conferences. It comes straight from 3 editions of the TKE guide.

The1calledTKE 12-29-2001 11:31 AM
