Are you sure that this is a prom? I thought these were from the 2005 Playas Ball. I could have sworn that I saw the Rev. Don "Magic" Juan in the background.

CTFU. CTFU. CTFU.
:D  :p

Highm8ness1 06-20-2005 04:50 PM

Did you go to your prom?
Yes I went to both of mine. We had a Junior and Senior Prom.

What did you wear?Colors?
My Junior prom I wore a black velvet strapless dress with a fuschia bottom that came just below my knees. My senior prom, I wore a black sequined fitted dress with white chiffon lace around the bottom.

Were you prom king/queen?
No.

Did you go with someone special or friend?

My Junior Prom I went with my husband, and my Senior prom I went stag. My husband dropped me off though. Well at that time he was my boyfriend.

What was your prom theme?

Junior-I believe it was where do we go from here. Senior--Unchained Melody.

How much did your prom cost? I think it was between $70-$80 bucks.

Some proms now have ish prices?

I just received some pics from my friend supposedly to be from a prom in Chicago. The style and dress was horrible, scary. I wish you all could see the pictures. What happened to going to the store and finding the perfect knockout dress. They were dressed in lime green, flourescent orange, lemon yellow, and they were so revealing, not the traditional evening wear gowns. Yuck.

Too funny! One of my friends in Boston sent me these pics just recently. He wanted to know if these kids were representative of all Chicago folks or just some. Below are the responses that I sent back to him as well as some of my other friends.

Oh what what what is wrong w/the kids today?

#1 No one should ever have a dress made for the prom ever again. If you can not afford to spend a pretty penny for a dress made by a reputable seamstress in a fabric other than satin, then you can't have your dress made.

#2 Cutting holes randomly into a dress does not make it a cute/unique design. It just makes it a Hot Azz Mess.

#3 Lets speak on colors that flatter you. If you are one of my many ebony sisters of the world then bright orange or yellow or lime green are not the colors for you. Arguably neither is white, but that's just my opinion. Please make friends with the shades known as gold, crimson, chocolate, champagne, navy blue, and, black.

#4 Your nails should never be long enough to be used as tongs when cooking.

#5 Now I thought that the ridiculous hair went out w/the 80s even the 90s. In this day and age there is no reason for you to be out of the house w/a combination finger wave, pin curl, french roll w/waterfall of weave coming out the top and crimps for the bangs. Why sistas? Why?

The future is looking so bleak.

Too funny and too true! Did their parents see them leave the house in this HAM or did they help them pick out the outfit? I shudder to think what things will be like when my kids are that age. Will the girls be down to two band-aids and an eye patch? The words "sit yo' $5 azz down before I make change" come to mind.

RedefinedDiva 06-21-2005 12:30 AM

I kinda wish that there were individual pictures of each woman, front and back. It's like a moth to a flame. I just want to see more.

HOW do people let their kids leave home like this? How do they authorize the making of such dresses?

christiangirl 06-21-2005 02:21 AM

Did you go to your prom?
Yes I went to both of mine. We had a Junior and Senior Prom.

What did you wear?Colors?
Junior prom, I wore a beautiful gown, I can't even describe it. It was 2-tone, cream and another color that was sort of a mixture of gold and silver. It was like 2 layers brought together with rhinestone buttons. I can't describe it, any better, just trust me on this, I looked the bomb. Senior Prom, I wore a strapless satin red ball gown that flared a bit at my hips. I looked like a princess, complete with tiara!

Were you prom king/queen?
No, but in that tiara I looked like one, just call me a prom perp.

Did you go with someone special or friend?

Junior prom, I went with a no-good skunk who abandoned me b/c I wouldn't dance up under him like a BET video. I spent the rest of the night up in the balcony with my teachers. Senior prom, I went with a very good friend, it was one of the best nights ever. We almost kissed on the front step when he took me home, but my daddy opened the door and put a stop to that one.

What was your prom theme?

Junior was Sea of Dreams (the gym was decorated like a cruise boat) and Senior, I don't remember.

How much did your prom cost?

I think $60 per couple (no singles or same-sex couples allowed).

vanda 06-21-2005 09:53 AM

I did not know those pics were from a Chicago prom. I wonder what school.

Whoever said random cute outs don't make you cute or sexy was right. And to Marie's friend talking about the dresses that were "made", that's because they could not find any appropriately revealing clothes at a store.

Did everyone check out the future MiAKA wanna be in picture number 3? White suit, pink piping on the suit, lime green shirt (in satin of course! I'm sure it matched his date's dress.

Open letter to the homie in the err-ange dress: If you are going to 'get low' please make sure I can't see you draws. If the goal was to let the world see your draws, make sure they are cute and color coordinated with your outfit!

What the heck is going on in picture 4? Is he proposing or getting ready to

I have no other words....

Picture 4 is the garter ceremony - I believe. We had this at my prom as well, but it looked nothing like that. The principal led the ceremony by instructing the guys as to what they should be doing. The girls kept their legs closed, and the guys took your hand in theirs and used their free hand to slip the garter off. It was actually pretty classy. What that girl is doing w/her date is obscene.

I never really understood the garter thing at prom. I didn't wear one to mines but all the other girls there had one and thought it was cute. I say save the garter for your wedding day!

Soror, that is always what I think when I see these pix. I know that I grew up in a different generation under different circumstances, but there are some things that parents need to do regardless of whether they are married, single, affluent, whatever.
And one of those things is to stop hypersexualizing their kids.

my father use to take pictures of all the guys i dated and when i asked me why? he said so they can identify the bodies for later use.

Help me out Marie. Is the garter ceremony at the prom like the one at weddings? What is the purpose? I can't imagine some horny high school guy being able to put his hand up some girl's dress and make it classy, but that's just me!

Tony & MaMaBuddah...handle yours!! I know that is right!

RedefinedDiva 06-21-2005 12:49 PM

These little girls have more breasts and thighs on display than Popeyes.

I don't undertand.... NONE of my friends (or non-friends, for that matter) had on the foolishness that kids wear today. Even the "fast" girls had their bodies covered. What a difference eight years make!

I think that the students should be barred from admittance with such dresses. I would even go so far as to say that their parents should be issued some sort of citation for indecent exposure of a minor. The madness must stop!

vanda 06-21-2005 01:27 PM

Garter ceremonies are big here. And some girls get real elaborate with their garters. It runs from something simple like a few rhinestones and you and your date's name and date to stuff looking like a mini feather boa ( one girl's was so thick, it looked like she was packing heat to her prom.) It used to be you sat down and the guys lifted your skirt very respectfully. Nowadays the splits in the dresses are so high you see the garter as she walks in which I think is too tacky. I think why some of these dresses turn out like they do is because the girls have no real guidance as to style the dress, and what is deemed appropriate. I wish I would have thought of wearing some of the stuff I saw this year. My mom would have cancelled my prom altogether.

OK...then what? Does the guy take the garter off? What does he do with it? Do most girls have their garter on their thigh? I know when I got married I kinda pulled mine down to right above my kneed before my hubby took it off. None of that whole head under the skirt for me! We might get freaky in the bedroom, but I ain't doing it for the whole world to see! Did I just say that???

LOL!! Yes, it is very similar to the ceremony at a wedding, but it is supposed to be more toned down as it is for high school students (no head under the dress, no taking it off w/the teeth). After the garter is taken off, the guy usually wears it around his bicep (at least they did at my school). Now that I think about it, I'm not sure what the point of it is at the high school level or how it became a tradition. It's just something that we considered a part of the night when I went to prom.

Did you go to your prom?
Yes. I went to four proms during H.S.

What did you wear? Colors?
There's a pic below

Were you prom king/queen?
No, I got first runner up :(

Did you go with someone special or friend?
He was a friend. I actually had a boyfriend but I promised him he could take me a year in advance...I don't break promises.

What was your prom theme?
12th Night from Shakespeare, it was on April 12

How much did your prom cost? Some proms now have ish prices?
An ex had bought me that necklace. My mom made my dress, did my hair and makeup, and made my corsage and his boutinerre *sp. So...all I paid for were my shoes and my earrings, so not that much. How much he paid....who knows.

Same thing in Warrensville Hts., Ohio. I did it in 1993 and I know it was done before then and after. It was just tradition. I do know several guys who took it off with their teeth. Most guys did the bicep thing that night and later put it on their rearview mirror.

I so feel you on that. My father took a picture of the limo driver for the same reason for my Jr. Prom! I just shook my head and got in the car...

I went to an all girls school & for my senior prom we had garters but not the ceremony. I just handed my date the garter and left it at that. I didn't even do it at our wedding, never even bothered to get one.

Me and my mom got in a discussion on my jr prom dress. The back opened to about the top of your bra hooks and she was like "oh no it won't be that deep. So mine wasn't that open in the back.

None of those chicks are cute in the pics..somebody is not doing their job of keeping their daughters off the pole!

[Did you go to your prom?COLOR=royalblue]Yup. I went to 2 proms senior year (mine and my boyfriend at the time went to another school)[/COLOR]
What did you wear? Colors?
I wore these 2 beautiful dresses. Both were black. Both were fitted. One had this beautiful see through train with embroidery around the front and back (the back was out). The other was more fitted with slits above the breast. (I just sold those dresses about 2 years ago) They were HOT! They were my second choice. My first choice was teal and it was being made but the dress was unravelling as it was being made! It was a disaster!
Were you prom king/queen?
Didn't care to be Did not run for it.
Did you go with someone special or friend?
I went with my boyfriend. We stayed t/g for 7 years afterwards.
What was your prom theme?Good question. I do not remember! That was over 10 years ago!
How much did your prom cost? I don't remember, but I know it was no where near what the price is today! I think tickets at that time had to be around $1-200
