I got to say today's spam for London Escorts is the best I've seen in a while.

Darn, I missed it. :(

tinydancer 06-20-2014 05:24 AM

OMG, they're back again. A whole page of them. I don't sleep well, so I notice how they only come out at night. Like the pod people or something.

MysticCat 06-20-2014 07:22 AM

I just don't get it. Does anyone really click on links in the spam-bot posts? What's the pay-off for them?

I've asked this question so many times. I don't understand the point of someone actually signing up and posting, or creating some stupid algorithm that will do the work for them. Either way, it seems to me a fruitless endeavor.

I imagine the incentive is similar to that of email spammers. Before the law changed regarding email spam there were many spammers who pulled in thousands of dollars per day.

Spam bots aren't programmed just for GreekChat but rather to spam forums & blog comment areas all over the net. Spreading their links on GC & 10,000+ other websites probably earns them a bit of money. Not sure how much but definitely enough to where the spammer attacks have continued for years.

If not for the blocks we already have in place on GC there would probably be 10x more spam posted here (which is likely a low estimate).

^^^ Yikes

The bossy and demanding GDIs are also spamming the board.

NinjaPoodle 08-16-2014 11:12 PM

Report them so we can ban them.

Nanners52674 10-12-2014 08:10 AM

"Steve Austin Return in Smackdown Rumor"

I've never been so disappointed to find out a thread was just spam :(

ChioLu 10-13-2014 01:21 PM

Spam-bot surge again today!

SydneyK 03-22-2015 03:39 PM

Wow. Go away, spammers!!

I always feel silly reporting spam since I figure the mods see it, too. I don't want to create a "Yes, yes. I KNOW!!" kind of feeling, so I tend not to report it. But I'll give it a shot...

tinydancer 03-22-2015 06:48 PM

I report spam a bunch of times. I hope the mods don't say "Oh no, there she goes again." This is getting ridiculous!
Another board I frequent reviews first posts before they are posted. No spam there at all.

FSUZeta 03-22-2015 08:55 PM

Folks, we are down to one supermod, who is very busy in his non-GC life, and the regular moderators can only get rid of spam in the forum they moderate. Many of our regular moderators are on GC infrequently, if at all. Sorry.

Sciencewoman 03-22-2015 09:46 PM

I think some promotions are in order! :)

I was going to suggest that. Maybe time for some new or additional mods.

cheerfulgreek 03-22-2015 11:14 PM

I noticed that the Spam was showing up more frequently and wasn't getting deleted. I wonder what happened to GC. It was so much fun when I first joined. We didn't have any Spam back then. At least I don't remember there ever being any Spam back then.

Wait... What about PenguinTrax? Isn't she a supermod?

Yep. What she said.

FSUZeta 03-23-2015 09:39 AM

PT is not on often and is probably tired of coming back solely to clean up spam. She has many irons in the fire.

As a mod, every time I log on I report spam so the forum mod(s) or supermod can kill it. The more reporting the merrier I think? Seems it's gotten really bad the past few weeks though.

If this is true - if she is "tired of coming back" - then perhaps she should resign. I was under the impression that she had already done that anyway, but it seems she still engages in supermod activities from time to time.

If a supermod resigns, shouldn't he/she be replaced? Between PT and NinjaPoodle (whom, regrettably, is rumored to have resigned), it would appear that we're two supermods light. Reading over this thread in its entirety indicates we've had a need for an additional (east coast) mod for years now. What can we do? Nominate someone?

FSUZeta 03-23-2015 03:53 PM

It is up to John.

tinydancer 03-23-2015 05:21 PM

Then he needs to get on the ball. No disrespect intended, but I would think he'd want better for his site.

I did resign.

Until John changes my status back to regular member, I've popped in and out to clean spam. If you're on GC enough, why don't you volunteer for supermod? Just a thought.

NP

thetalady 03-24-2015 12:59 AM

A couple of us have volunteered to step up and help keep the spam cleaned both here and in the other thread :)

1963 Owtlaw 03-24-2015 04:05 AM

I'll do it. Does dude got y'all (super moderators) on some kind of payroll?

Nanners52674 03-25-2015 11:51 AM

I don't think it's ever been this bad. I'd step up for East cost. I'm typically up early and have the time to frequently check in.

33girl 03-25-2015 12:36 PM

We don't need more supermods, we need the probationary status to work differently and not show on the main board. A spammer quarantine, if you will.

Yes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Absolutely right!!

Nanners52674 03-25-2015 01:49 PM

I don't care if we have to do something like a 24 hour hold or whatever. Do it. If people really want to be members they'll go through the steps.

hathorlive 03-26-2015 11:03 AM

Actually, there are things you can set up in the vbulletin settings that are much more effective at stopping spam. I run a forum using PHPBB and used the techniques which totally stopped spam. Vbulletin has a way to set up questions during register (like what is 1 +1) that any human should be able to complete. It's totally stopped spam accounts from being created on my board.

1963 Owtlaw 03-26-2015 11:22 AM

CTFU! goodman, we got spam comin on here sharing info on how to control spam. LOL!

I'm not sure how sharing information about how to stop spam via the built in methods the forum software provides is spam. But to each his own.

I'm not sure how you found this site -- don't give a shit LOL. But I would think administrator dude would know that, if it worked. Have a seat, home's.
