University of Miami, Florida - 1960 Derby Day
The 1960 yearbook has lots of good pictures. Most of the sororities had a Derby Day picture on their page, so here they are.

University of Miami, Florida - 1960 Sorority Pledges on Parade
These are more pictures from the 1960 yearbook. I think that they are interesting because these were the last few years of an era. In 1963 we had the Berkley Free Speech Movement. In the mid 1960's we had the height of the Civil Rights Movement. And in the late 1960's we had the Viet Nam protests. During this same period, we also had the introduction of The Pill and the end of "In loco Parentis". The world of 1970 was not the world of 1960, the world into which these pictures give us a peek.

Aw! This picture is so sweet. I adore the dress, too. But I especially love how they are looking at each other. Back on topic, I really enjoy looking at these retro pictures. Maybe it's the sentimental mood I'm in, but I get a strong sense of history and years tradition and sisterhood. I think it's really sweet seeing pictures of founders, and pictures of sorority women in front of their house that is over 100 years old. I think it would be amazing to be a part of something so steeped in tradition with thousands of sisters of sisters everywhere. (back to my nosing around old threads....) |
UofM-TKE, thanks so much for sharing these pictures! I love seeing stuff from back in the day.
|
UofM-TKE- I love all the Miami pictures you found, especially of the panhellenic building, and all the goregous ADPi pledges :)

The lovely founding members of Theta Phi Alpha... Only 2 of them were actually collegians! |
This thread is absolutely amazing.
I was on a committee last year to document Greek Life activities since our school was founded but I only took one picture. I'll have to go back through the yearbooks (when my school used to do them) and find some more! But here's my chapter when my school was still Lawrence Institute of Technology in 1972 (or '73) a few months after affiliating (10/23/71)! (formerly Kappa Phi Sigma): http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-...35988_6398.jpg One of those guys is my Big (x18) Brother! I'm in one of the only original families :D |

Has this ever been posted before? I don't recall seeing it. Amazing photos of rush at the University of Colorado in 1945, including a shot of a pref ceremony and the Kappas voting on their new members! Times change, I guess.

Loved the Life article! Our chapter is no longer there, so it was even more interesting to me. One of the signs of "Times, They Are A Changin'" was a picture of all the pins for that campus, saying that they each cost about $15!!

Thanks so much for sharing the link to LIFE. I love historical pieces. That was a great article! :)

More than one of our alumnae have been clients of mine. This picture was given to me from one of the alumnae, when ADPi first returned to campus after WWII (the whole chapter closed to work on the war effort):
http://digital.library.pitt.edu/cach...0152.jp2.s.jpg It's from 1946, and the woman who gave it to me is H. Davis, sitting almost at the middle. FYI: Many of the sororities at Pitt had as few as six members prior to 1960. There may have been as many as 17-18 sororities, but even the largest sororities didn't have 30 members! |
I'm friends with a SigEp alum on Facebook and here are some pictures he's posted.
Keep in mind with this first one that our newest members' membership cards say 280,000 on theirs. http://hphotos-snc1.fbcdn.net/hs183...._2490423_n.jpg http://hphotos-snc1.fbcdn.net/hs029...._5313973_n.jpg |
