I think I was a wee bit later... early 90s... the very tail end of "old school rush." But.. I was just a few miles away over at TCU :).

And I am sure you can guess which alumnae chapters were the most vocal!

Sorry for the hijack... back to regular programming....

Yep, probably the one I'm a member of right now;)

Yes, back to regularly scheduled programming.

Any word on how the day went??

not sure about this at auburn. I know of one very large sorority at auburn that would invite 3x quota; because that was their national policy, not the auburn policy. Nationally they were a smaller sorority, but at Auburn they were a large sorority. Tell your daughters to look around at pref, and if it is "standing room only" and barely an empty chair-that means they did invite 3x quota. If it is a normal size amount of girls ar pref- they probably invited 2x quota; and if it is skimpy....that means that sorority probably won't pledge quota, so as long as a girl doesn't suicide, she could probably get a bid from them!

Again, this may not be the case if the new release figure methods are being used. The room might be "skimpy" because there's a 99.999% chance that every girl there will put that sorority first on her list.

pref parties

I think I read on the website that the sororities are having 4 parties to keep the numbers at the parties down, but the pnms can only go to three. I could be wrong. If a sorority is having problems with numbers would they just go to three parties, instead of the fourth one? That way you wouldnt necessarily know based on the number at the party.

Is this post RFM? If they are large at Auburn, the campus Panhellenic will force a "popular" chapter to make more cuts. The campus Panhellenic rules will trump a "National policy" (thought I really don't think there would be a National policy, unless you are speaking of recruitment pre-release figure method).

With the RFM, the opposite is true. Chapters with high return rates may invite as few as 1.5 x projected quota, because historically, a good amount of the PNMs that they invite put them first. Chapters with lower return rates will have larger parties, 3 x projected quota or even more, because fewer PNMs will rank them, so they need a larger pool to make quota.

In either event, I think it is bad advice to tell your daughter to look at how many girls are at pref, thinking about quota, etc. They should worry about things they CAN control during recruitment week, like making a good impression, having good conversation skills, and being well-groomed.

Doubtful. Those chapters will need the extra parties the most because they will be inviting the most PNMs.

I know Zillini said that Alabama had 4 preference parties on the schedule but that the chapters had the option of doing 3 or 4.

Likely the chapters that will opt for 3 are the ones who will have the smallest preference parties---the high-return-rate chapters.

Hi - I have been reading he Auburn posts. My daughter is rushing at Bama. I am interested in the fates of all your rush girls. My daughter is doing what they say is average right now, and I am so grateful. She just finished Philanthropy days. She is not able to talk right now but I am eager to hear the results. I am going off tommorrow so I can be there when the news hits on Sat or Sunday. What is a good number going into Philanthropy? Does anyone know what is good going to skit day? Should you try to prefer the most popular chapter? or should you go for your next favorites? At the end of the day she feels she could be happy either way. Also what do you do about chapter you really have not connected with but you still get asked to?

A full schedule is not important. Your daughter can only pledge ONE sorority. When I was a Rho Gamma, one of my PNMs only had one chapter for preference, and I was getting all prepared to console her for potential disappointment, but she was thrilled because it was her favorite and she ended up there. If you daughter has chapter(s) that she likes on her schedule, and is still willing to give others that she feels so-so or not so hot about a second (or even third) look, that's all that matters.

She should rank her favorite chapters in order of HER preference, wherever her preferences may lie.

You go back. Unless you want to screw yourself over (some campuses will release you from recruitment if you blow off a party unexcused; at others it will remove you from eligibility to guarantee a match after preference). And if you're really smart, you'll try to give them another chance to keep your options open.

ahhh! I've been reading this thing the whole way through, and I can't wait for another update! :)

Update

Just got text message from daughter. No one cut her today, so she's going to her top three from yesterday's parties.

Football Fan 08-15-2008 12:17 PM

Best wishes to her today. You must be both relieved and happy.

AUmom08, I'm tickled for your daughter! My daughter is rushing at BAMA but I have a son at Auburn. I was there yesterday moving him into his apartment. I talked with his girlfriend who is in one of the sororities there. She said these were very tough days for them. It's just as hard being on the "other" side. Good luck to everyone at Auburn!
