Is it just me or are you like the luckiest person to go through rush? I know you went through it a little differently but hey thats the story of my life so I like it! But to be able to be automatic pledges of five groups and you get to pick, thats amazing!! I am glad you got the option to pick your favorite and you had a great four years in college! Great story by the way...really was a good read

Hooray for you and Alpha Gam... years later! :)

This thread was wonderful. I really felt like I was sitting right next to you! It is interesting to think of how COB was then versus now. And to think you had all those choices! Amazing.

I don't ever post on rush threads - just read them, started when my own dd went through 2 years ago. She is a Rho Gam this year and I hope she can make as profound of an impact as yours did!

You are also a gifted writer! Does your career now involve writing in any way?

Thanks so much for sharing. Can't wait for the next retro thread!

As you might recall, Laura (Steph's roommate, and one of my first friends on my floor) was a member of Sideshow Bob/Alpha Gamma Delta. I was having so much fun as a pledge that she really started to realize what she was missing out on. I encouraged her to reach out to the chapter, and she ended up getting involved with the house again. (She had never officially deactivated - just went home for the summer and never went over to the house once she came back to school in the Fall.) I'm sure she had to work hard and probably pay some fines for missing all of rush...I was a pledge so I wasn't privvy to that info. But she ended up being a great sister and was very involved with the chapter up until the day she graduated. (And she's still active as an alumnae member.) If I hadn't pledged Alpha Gam, I honestly don't think she ever would have gotten involved with the house again - she probably would have continued to live with/hang out with Steph instead, not realizing that her sisters would have given her a second chance
awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. what a wonderful rush thread! not only did you find your home and your sisters, but you got another sister to come back :D i second the motion that you are an excellent writer! considering you didn't know what you were getting into when you decided to rush, your notes reveal a lot of maturity and common sense about the whole rush process :) yay for susan!

What a great story! I haven't been posting but you've had me on the edge of my seat. Even though I knew there was a happy ending I could really feel how stressful it was for you.

Thanks for sharing! And congratulations on following your heart and finding Alpha Gam! :)

I'll start this weekend, but my story is not as intriguing as Susan's. It'll pass the time though.

ETA: This was one of the best recruitment stories that I have read in content, tact, and writing style. It is right up there with Curly Girl! Congratulations I guess...although you joined Alpha Gam a long time ago. I thought it was so cool that you got Laura to be involved again!

I am a total lurker/recruitment story junkie. I loved loved loved your story susan! I wanted to post my story, but yours is sooo much better!

Thanks for sharing...it's amazing how your heart will tell you where you need to go if you just listen! I'm glad you had the good sense to look past all of the bad rumors and bad experiences you'd heard about Alpha Gamma Delta (I need to learn how to do the greek letters!) and realize that they were the group you were meant to joint.

That was so much fun to read!

I am the sort of person who tends to skip to the end of a book because I like to know the ending before I read the climax.

I cannot believe you got that many bid cards. I'm sure I echo many others when I say that your situation was truly a recruitment dream come true!

This was a great story. Mine was so long ago that I can't even remember it. And since I knew nothing about greek life, taking notes wasn't something I did either.

But then this summer marks 20 years since I went through rush......

susan314 05-27-2007 01:43 AM

Thanks to all for reading my story and for the positive comments.

Years later and now with more knowledge of Greek life, I do look back and think about how lucky I really was. While I wouldn't recommend that any current PNM try to take my roundabout route through recruitment, I do hope that perhaps they can take from it the lessons that would still apply today. :)

P.S. For those who wondered...I don't write on any sort of professional level, but I have kept journals for many years. I get a lot of practice, even if it is "for my eyes only." Maybe I should start a blog. ;) Unfortunately, most of the happenings in my life these days aren't as riveting as my rush story...unless you'd find stories about potty training toddlers and a disobedient dog riveting. :o lol

P.S.S. It has been bothering me that I didn't clarify this earlier, so I'd like to mention it now. I had knee surgery a few months prior to rush, and I was still recuperating at the time of rush. As I mentioned in my Phase A description, one of the sororities (SDT) was 10 blocks away from the others. We had to walk (nearly run, actually) out to that house for their party, and then racewalk 10 blocks back to attend the Phi Mu party. I was starting to feel tired/in pain at the SDT party, and it was even worse by the time we cycled back for the Phi Mu party. Everyone saw my description of what my parties were like at those 2 chapters in Phase A, so I won't rehash that here. When I mentioned being tired at those parties, a large part of that was due to me still being in recovery from the knee surgery. (I wasn't just tired - I was in some pain too.) I still cringe to this day when I think about how my experience at the Phi Mu party could have been interpreted by the chapter as me being rude or dismissive of them. It was a bad combination of just walking 20 blocks roundtrip in extreme heat and humidity, while recuperating from knee surgery, and having one active double rush me with another PNM who happened to be really chatty. It was just too easy to zone out and let the other PNM carry the conversation. However, it definitely was more a result of circumstance than any dislike or disrespect for that chapter.

(And I was glad to hear from efcheer that PNMs don't have to do that walk for Phase A anymore - I know that I wasn't the only PNM over the years to have less than positive experience at those 2 parties through absolutely no fault of the chapters. I always thought that the way Phase A was organized was unfair to those 2 groups, and its good to see that the playing field has been leveled.)
